About this listing
The Domes is a unique vacation adventure. Made of 3 connected EarthBag domes on an organic farm, it's like a Hobbit House for normal size people! Enjoy stellar views, primary rainforest, privacy & a clean environment. There are 2 bedrooms, 2 loft areas and an upstairs office/bedroom. The large open deck offers great views of the valley and the vertical wall of rainforest beside us. Explore our farm & the local area to see a non-touristy side of Costa Rica. Great for families with kids!
The Domes is an unusual house, made of 3 conjoined circular EarthBag domes shaped like giant beehives. Why stay somewhere square? Go round for a change! The house features 2 private bedrooms, each in its own dome, that connect to the center dome which is the main living room. The King's Dome dome has a king-size latex mattress in a bamboo canopy bed. The Queen's Dome has a queen-size bed. There are also sleeping lofts above both bedrooms, accessed by ladders, that would be super fun for older children or agile people.
Also on the main floor is the kitchen and bathroom (now fully screened in) with bananas and papayas growing right outside! The kitchen has a full-size fridge with large freezer, and a 2-burner gas stovetop (no oven). The bathroom has a hot shower and wonderful tile work of local stones and slate.
The upstairs level is reached by a beautiful hardwood spiral staircase. There is an indoor loft room that can be used as an office or sleeping space (high speed Internet included). Outside is a covered deck with stunning views of the vertical Tinamastes ridge beside us, and all the way down the valley towards the ocean. An amazing place for yoga, meditation, hanging in a hammock, and enjoying spectacular sunsets. In rainy season you will often see waterfalls pouring down the face of the ridge!
The Earthbag construction keeps the interiors fresh and cool in summer, like natural air conditioning! And when it's cool outside at night, it's warming inside. The bedrooms, living room, kitchen, bathroom and upstairs loft all have doors and window screens.

The Domes is located at the upper edge of Fuente Verde, our 60-acre community-owned organic farm, which provides a safe and tranquil environment. It is the perfect place for people who want a more natural rural experience, away from the noise and commotion of the beach towns.
You are free to explore the farm and hike the trails into the protected primary rainforest that begins only a few hundred yards from your door. Listen to howler monkeys serenading the sunrises and sunsets! Take the family for a dip in our swimming hole and enjoy hiking up the river. Our farm has water from its own springs and abundant fruit trees.
If you would like to stay on our farm, but don't need a space as large as the Domes, we have a smaller cabin to rent as well. You can see the listing here: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/3089682
There is excellent bird watching on the farm: our gardens, fruit trees, ponds and rivers provide ample food and shelter for many of the 860 bird species that live in or pass through Costa Rica. Our Fuente Verde bird count is close to 200 species! Best times for bird watching are from December to April, when the North American migrant species come to feed and breed here.
Interaction with Guests
I also live on the farm, just a few minutes walk from The Domes, so am available to greet you and get you settled in. I can provide info on the area and answer questions as the need arises.
The Domes is perfectly located in the magical Diamante Valley, halfway between the bustling surf town of Dominical on the southern Pacific Coast, and the city of San Isidro de El General, gateway to Chirripo Mountain. So within a short drive you have access to endless beaches and world class surf, or Costa Rica's highest mountain.
There are an incredible number of things to do in the area: local tour companies offer zip-lining, whitewater kayaking, surf lessons, mangrove tours, whale-watching, waterfall hikes & rappelling, plus more!
There are simple grocery stores and restaurants in the nearby village of Tinamastes, and Tuesdays there is an organic market as well, featuring locally grown organic fruits & veggies, tasty prepared food, arts & crafts, and delicacies like water buffalo cheese! Every Thursday and Friday there is a huge Farmer's Market in San Isidro, 1/2 hour away by car. Each rental of 7 days or more includes a free Welcome basket of local fruit and organic coffee!
Getting here and away
To best take advantage of your vacation time we strongly recommend renting a car. To access the farm a 4 wheel drive vehicle is required. If you don't plan to leave the farm often you can take a taxi here (about $30 from Dominical or San Isidro) and then hire taxis or a rental car for day trips. There is no public transportation directly to the farm. The nearest daily bus routes and shops are 2 km away. The walk from the farm to the bus or shops is mostly uphill on a rough dirt road that will be either dusty or muddy depending on the season.
Other Things to Note
There is a solar laundry drying room on the upper deck and a large covered parking area adjoining the back side of The Domes.
We ask you to please respect the private homes and gardens of the other community members living on the farm.
No smoking in the Domes.
Please note there is a minimum 4-night rental.
Rates are for up to 6 people. Each additional person $15/night.
The Domes are also available for long term rentals. Rates can be negotiated based on length of stay.
