Want to get away from it all?

Imagine living off-grid and off the beaten track in the middle of wild coastal forest with tropical gardens, an abundance of wild birds and the sun setting in front every day of the year! The Treetop Apartment is the top floor of the Treehouse which is perched on top of a cliff with amazing views over the Caribbean sea, an oasis of peace and quiet set back from busy Marigot Bay while being just a short walk away. A secluded cove is only 10-15 minutes walk away

The space
We are an "approved COVID 19 accommodation" listed by the Government of Saint Lucia on its website so you are very welcome to come and stay with us!

The Treetop Apartment is designed for maximum enjoyment of its spectacular and unique location with incredible views over the Caribbean sea and the coastal forest bordering the house.

The Treetop Apartment is the entire top floor of the Treehouse. On the lower floor is the Treehouse Garden Studio. The two floors can be rented separately, as they are completely private one from the other, or together as an entire house.

In the Treetop Apartment, the large terrace is the perfect place for outdoor living with a large dining table and chairs and comfortable sofa and easy chairs. If it gets too sunny in the afternoon you can lower the sunshades which are made of vintage coffee sacks and which give a lovely soft dappled light to the entire terrace. The cushion covers on the sofa and chairs are also made from vintage coffee sacks.

Doing all of the cleaning and maintenance work ourselves, you will not be disturbed during your stay with us unless we can be of help or assistance in which case a quick whatsapp message will reach us immediately. The apartment will be thoroughly cleaned before your arrival and anti-bacterial soaps and hand sanitizer provided. You will need to wear a mask and social distance when out and about but we will help you get the most from your stay in Saint Lucia. During lockdown we have re-varnished and re-painted all surfaces as well as hand crafting and installing beautiful sinks made of local hardwood with driftwood taps. We have also created a new vanity cupboard in the bathroom using pallet wood and local wood.

The top floor inside space includes a standard double bed with a Cambodian mosquito net on a driftwood frame (we collected all the driftwood ourselves from local beaches and made these into a bed) and a hand sewn bed cover made from vintage hemp grain sacks from Hungary. There are ample storage cupboards for clothing and a fully equipped kitchen hand crafted from recycled wood. Kitchen appliances include a four hob gas stove and oven, below the counter fridge with ice box, kettle, blender, coffee machine and toaster. There are also two barbecues available for use outside.

The indoor bathroom has double hand basins hand crafted from wood with storage cabinets made from pallet wood and a WC while there are two outdoor showers: one close to the house with water heated by passive solar heating on the roof and the other spectacularly located over the cliff with trees hosting local orchid plants. Both are totally private and only for use by the Treetop Apartment. It is impossible for them to be overlooked. The lower Garden Studio has its own showers. The Treetop Apartment showers can only be accessed through the bathroom door which leads out of the back of the apartment on the side of the house which overlooks the sea.

All our power is solar power generated from solar panels on the roof of our house. In addition, all the water is our own harvested rainwater, double filtered, pure and safe to drink. The water in one of the showers is heated while the cliffside shower uses water from the tanks at ambient temperature which is normally 27 degrees C. Most guests do not use hot water at all as they prefer to cool down rather than heat up!

We deliberately do not have a pool as the dangers of swimming in chlorine are now well known especially for people with skin allergies, asthma, etc. We thought of a salt water pool but these are just as bad as they use salt to generate their own chlorine which is bad for your health as well as the environment. It is much nicer to swim from the two wonderful beaches which are just below the house and enjoy the beauty of the fish and underwater life they offer. The beaches are not far from eachother and you can easily swim between them which many of our guests do.

Pablo and I are committed environmentalists and our passion for nature drives everything we do. Unlike other guest houses we never use pesticides or insecticides but work with natural pest control solutions. A network of 15 fishpools provides an environmental solution to prevent mosquitoes breeding as the fish eat any mosquito larvae and therefore drastically reduce the mosquito population - this is in direct contrast to the common local guesthouse practice of fogging for mosquitos with a spray made of neurotoxins.

Using our experience, we provide advice to local hotels to help them reduce their impact on the environment and conserve resources such as energy and water. We have planted our garden to encourage birds and other wildlife onto our plot and we have left two thirds of our large property wild as a wildlife sanctuary. We are also planting many native plants such as orchids and air plants in our plot which have been rescued from development areas in order to protect them from extinction.

We love using driftwood, corals, shells and other items collected from the beaches around the house. We make our own glasses from bottles left by guests and we are making calabash bowls for the studios, as used in daily life by the local people.

We have inherited a commercial ice cream maker and as Pablo loves ice cream we always have a selection of homemade ice creams available which we invite guests to share if they wish. We just ask a small fee to cover ingredient costs and work on an honesty box principle where you settle for what you have consumed when you leave. They have proved very popular! We are also now making rum and banana bread and banana rum. We keep a stock of local beers for guests to purchase at cost price.

We have a family of three black labradors who live with us and who love visitors as well as five goats who keep the grass down along the roadside - so much nicer than using a strimmer! We have just rescued a local horse which was being mistreated. Her name is Ten and she is blind in one eye but wonderfully sweet natured. She grazes on the field below the house and sleeps at night in a stable at the bottom of the steps to our house. She loves meeting guests especially if they offer her a banana! You can see photos of her enjoying swimming on the small beach below our house.

We have a considerable respect for our guests privacy and we not only give you private "space" while you are staying here but we do all the cleaning and maintenance ourselves so you will not be disturbed by on-site staff.

We work with local Saint Lucians and we have designed with them a series of private land and sea tours which are not on any tourist "programme". These are focused on local experiences and off the beaten track adventures.

Also available for hire if you book it early enough is our spare car, a small 4x4 Suzuki Jimny which is ideal for the road conditions here. The car is nine years old but well maintained. Let us know if you want more details. We rent the Jimny only to our private guests on a first come first served basis. We have written a detailed information sheet on all these options which we can send you once you have booked your stay with us.

Please check with us before booking to know if any COVID 19 restrictions are in force which might affect your stay.

Where you’ll be

Marigot Bay, St. Lucia

The Treetop Apartment is just 20 minutes walk from Marigot Bay which is one of the most beautiful bays in the Caribbean. Marigot Bay has a lively marina with restaurants, cafes, bars, shops, bank, ATM, minimarket, watersport hire and boat charters. Many beautiful beaches are easily accessible although a car makes this much easier unless you are a good walker. The secluded cove below the house is just 20 minutes walk away and has good snorkelling.

From March 2022, Sarah and Pablo will be returning to the UK and the Treehouse and Hummingbird Hangout will be managed by Martin and Annett who are as passionate about the environment as we are! Martin and Annett have lived for four years in Saint Lucia and have many tips and information about local life and experiences which they will be happy to pass on! They do not live on site but live in a cottage nearby and will be happy to meet arriving guests and help with any questions or issues you may have. Unlike other local rentals, we use local wood as well as upcycled materials (pallet wood, driftwood, etc) to furnish and fit out our apartments. We never use pesticides or insecticides but use natural methods to reduce pests (for example we use fish ponds to reduce mosquitoes which have been very successful). We also work directly in partnership with local people who want to help our guests discover their beautiful island. We do not do it ourselves as we would not be able to offer you the same insights and we do not go through tour agencies. These are local people we have met while living on the island.
