The space

Mnarani House initially build in 1989 - underwent a complete and major renovation in 2014. The House is situated uniquely next to the Friday Mosque with a beautiful sea view from all floors, bordering a green garden behind the house and the Shela village to the left of the house

Guests will have sole access to the entire house with all its amenities and swimming pool area. There are no off limits

Our house staff Raphael and Lucas (Cook) will look and ensure all your needs are catered for during your stay.

Raphael has been with us since 2008 and manages the house on day to day basis.

Lucas has been our Cook for the past 20 years and can cook anything from traditional Swahili Dishes to everyday Sea Food. He also arranges for the supply of fresh fish, lobster, Crab, Calamari and Prawns.

Shela Village is a lovely quiet place - just about 800 people live in the village and after a short period you will feel part of the community.

The community is primarily muslim, therefore we encourage our guests to respect their ways of living as well as the day to day traditions.

You need to experience walking about in the village, there are no real roads so everything is on foot in small valleys - We recommend our guests to spend time on both Manda and Shela beaches, a Lamu Town Visit, Dhow Sundowner trip, fishing trips, a trip to the Takwa ruins

You will as part of the package be collected from the Airport by Mr. Balala, he will take you and your luggage by boat to our house (20 min). Boat transfers and porter charges are payable separately.

Shela village has no major roads and getting around is on foot or by boat.

Guest access

You will have access to the entire house and have private use of the same. We discourage our guests from inviting outsiders onto the premises.

Interaction with guests

Raphael the House keeper will look after you and the house
Lucas our Cook will create the most amazing dishes for you.

The neighborhood

Shela is a small village of the North East Cost of Kenya (Lamu Island) It is a muslim community and very traditional. Visitors are very welcome and we remind our guests to respect local traditions.

Getting around

Everything in Shela is on foot or by boat. There exist no cars or any other forms of transport, apart from donkeys!

Check-in is after 3PM

We generally remove our shoes inside the house, and there are foot baths available to rinse sand from the feet upon entry. In respect of our Muslim neighbors we suggest that noise levels be reasonable and respectful during prayer times. In case you decide to have henna painting done please take care of our cushions and bedding as well as your own clothes as the henna stains are very difficult to remove.
