Detached studio in Mountain View, Hawaii, on the Big Island. About half way between Hilo and Volcano National Park. Has full bath, walk in closet, utility kitchen on lanai (porch). Must have car. We're half an hour up the hill from Hilo. Jungly area
Seperate studio with kitchenette on lanai (porch), full bath, large walk-in closet, patio downstairs with table and chairs, washer and dryer. There is also internet, local tv (although not much) and movies to watch. The bed is queen size. If there are three or four people, a sleeper couch is available. The space is a studio, or one big room.
The studio, patio, and yard, if they're interested. Access to property is through a gate and access to studio is a separate entrance from the main house. Please let us help you not to let the dogs run out from the gate. If you contact us when you are close, like in the subdivision, we can make sure they are inside. We are between 3-4 miles from the main highway. We have six Labs and three cats on a fenced acre. It's rural. You can hear frogs chirping at night. Please DO NOT go by GPS once you get on our street. It will send you to the wrong house! We are about a quarter of a mile down 17 Rd., on the left. The driveway right after ours has a mailbox. Please don't go up that driveway, but it's a good landmark. There are also small tree branches above our gate to keep the dogs from climbing it, so our gate is easy to spot. Once confirmed, you will see detailed directions on how to get here on your itinerary. GPS works fine until you get on the street we live on. Don't know why. There are two blue reflectors on our gate, and an address to the left of the gate, saying 11-1833 Punahele Ave. To the right of the gate there is a no trespassing sign, but that doesn't apply to you, dear guests.
Interaction with Guests
We are friendly but like to give people their privacy.
The neighborhood pretty much keeps to themselves unless they're walking around, or you know them. There are plenty of houses in the neighborhood, but also a lot of raw land. It's very rural.
There is bus service from the highway, but it's 3-4 miles from the house, so you need a car.
Other Things to Note
Bring food if you want to cook, and to have on hand, as we are out of town.
We are comparable to a hostel in price, so please don't expect the Hilton. We want you to be happy here, with realistic expectations.
Please DO NOT use GPS when you get on our street. It will send you to the wrong house. We are on the left, about a quarter of a mile down the street. We are the driveway BEFORE the one with a mailbox on the road. Please don't go up that driveway. People have done that too much, and I have told the neighbor that wouldn't keep happening. We have a gate with a fence, and a sign with the address 11-1833 Punahele Ave. on the left of the gate. There are two blue reflectors on the gate. This info is also under "guest access" in the hope that it will not be missed.
Be good to the place, and us, and enjoy your stay. If someone else is coming the day you're leaving, I have to adhere to the check out time. Otherwise it doesn't matter what time you leave.
One very important thing to note: We rely on rain for our water, so please be considerate of that fact while showering, and help us conserve.
Janice is a gracious host. We especially enjoyed the private lanai with complementary mac nuts and coffee. This place is conveniently located for exploration of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Also, it stays nice and cool at night at this elevation. We had a nice stay at Janice's studio.
Everything was perfect! The room was great, and we loved the outdoor kitchen and all the dogs. Couldn't have asked for better accommodations for the price.
We spent 4 nights in Janice´s house and we have to say that it was fine. Studio is simply furnished but sufficient especially for tavelers who are out most of the day. It is situated deep in the jungle around 15 miles from Hilo. We used our GPS to get there and we had no problem. Janice is very friendly and communicative lady living with her 8 dogs but they were separated from us most of the time. She also gave us some bagels. We recommend to stay here.
Janice's little studio was a great place to start my Hawaiian adventure! I arrived later than expected, and she's right that it's hard to find after dark! I found that a combo between my iPhone's maps and her directions were most effective for getting me there. Because of my busy days, I wasn't there for much more than sleeping, but Janice was friendly and welcoming when I saw her. I loved waking up to the wild bird sounds in the morning, the jungle view and that she had coffee and bagels available for breakfast on the porch! (Janice even brought me extra bagels and fruit when I didn't see them in the fridge the first morning! My mistake, and she's so thoughtful!) I used this as a stopping point between Hilo and Volcanoes National Park. There's not much around the house, but if you want a little relaxing spot off the beaten path, stay here!
The reservation was canceled 18 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.
We feel welcomed. The environment is very quiet. The description is correct.
Friendly host and simple, functional accommodation well suited for the budget conscious traveler who is out exploring most the day.
We are down to earth people, who enjoy meeting the guests, but also like to give them their space. It's been a privilege meeting people from around the world, and is evidence that people are basically good, and have more in common than not, no matter where they're from.
