Description

The space

Relax and enjoy your elegant home in San Miguel, a beautiful colonial city in the heart of Mexico. At Casa Colina (the House on the Hill), you will enjoy light and bright open areas, original artwork, a colonial ambiance and all the modern conveniences. Casa Colina has been featured on the popular House and Garden Tour to benefit the Biblioteca Publica.

Casa Colina is in the Ojo de Agua neighborhood of San Miguel, named for the ancient church and spring. Your old and new friends will clamor (trust us - we know!) to visit you at this lovely home, and both young and young-at-heart will ride the waterslide from the outdoor living area into the pool!

Enter the home through the walled garden and POOL area, and climb the gracious staircase to the airy outdoor living room with a fireplace. Stop, lounge, relax and enjoy the views, or enter the interior of the home. From the outdoor sala, you may enter the kitchen and dining area or the elegant living room featuring a hand-carved cantera fireplace with gas logs.

You are above the town, with the convenience of a garage, but still only a fifteen-minute downhill walk to Centro (less to the Instituto). When you want to go back home, grab a cab for $2, or get a workout and walk home. We also have a SCOOTER available for an additional fee.

At bedtime, you will enjoy the cool bedrooms on the first level. We built the bedrooms on the ground floor to enjoy both cool bedrooms and a better view from the main living areas. You will love the new, comfortable, American-sized Sealy mattresses and the Egyptian cotton sheets on the hand-crafted beds. Each bedroom boasts a unique boveda ceiling romantically lighted from the hand-cast mouldings.

The home has an open floor plan, but still is equipped with separate areas if groups of guests would like some privacy. Find your favorite spot on the rooftop terrace, the main living floor, the outdoor living room or in the cozy 'Mexican Modern' television room.

You can enjoy your holiday without everyday cares, as Amalia comes each day to clean the home and do the laundry. She is a VERY talented cook, and will also cook breakfast and the midday dinner for a small additional fee. Just let us know!

Let's take a moment to talk about WATER. First, there is the pool with its thrilling water slide. Second, all the water in the house is purified, so you can drink without worry. Third, the showers in the house are fabulous Rainfall showerheads, including the outdoor shower. You'll have the best showers of your life. Fourth, there is a Jacuzzi tub in the master bathroom.

The bedrooms comfortably sleep five, but trundle beds and a futon in the television room will accommodate occasional overnight guests. Cable television, cable internet, wifi plus a security system complete the modern conveniences in this colonial treasure.

We have a competent and friendly staff. Amalia, the maid, comes daily to keep the house sparkling. Fernando, our gardener, comes three times per week. Best of all Norma, our house manager, is authorized to solve any problems that may arise. You will be carefree, except for balancing all of the marvelous activities available in San Miguel de Allende.

I have a webpage you can visit for more information. Drop me a line and I'll send you the link.

Guest access

Casa Colina boasts a solar-heated pool with a waterslide, rain showerheads and wifi. You will have maid service Monday-Friday, plus cooking for a moderate additional fee. The whole house will be yours.

Interaction with guests

You will be looked after by the staff of the house. I will not be present.

The neighborhood

Ojo de Agua is close to Centro, yet above the fray. Noise and mosquitoes are reduced, and views are enhanced. You can easily walk into town, or grab a taxi.

Getting around

You will walk a lot in San Miguel, or take taxis. You can also rent our scooter if you choose. If you have your own car, you can park it at the house.
We can help with transportation from the airport.

Other things to note

The house is equipped with WiFi, a US/Canada phone line and many other conveniences.
My minimum stay over the Christmas and New Year Holidays is five (5) days. I was unable to set that in the calendar.

The house is just like the photos. Very spacious. Best part of our stay was: Amalia. Amalia is more than a housekeeper/cook. She is amazing. Fantastic cook.

We stayed at Alex's place for a wedding in San Miguel de Allende and to have a few days of relaxation. We were very satisfied with our stay. The house is an experience in itself. It is beautiful architecturally as well as in the choice of art and decor. Communication before and during our stay was really good. Alex also organized a driver for us from Mexico City which was great after a long flight. Check in was easy, even though we arrived very late. The facilities in the home are wonderful, with plenty of space to spread out and relax. The pool with the waterslide was lovely. The waterslide is great for kids...and adults :). We took up the offer of having Amalia cook for us (the housekeeper). We had breakfast and lunch at the house every day and never ate at a restaurant. The food was amazing! The location is a bit out of the centre - about a 15-20 minute walk, which allows you to see a bit more of the town. However, we would recommend a taxi or uber on the way back as there is quite a steep hill (taxi cost about 3 USD). The house is located quite close to a highway so there is frequent noise from the trucks airbrakes which is the only downside that we found about staying here. This happens more during the day, but I would suggest some headphones when laying by the pool. Overall, an amazing house and experience and one that we will remember. Did I mention Amalia's cooking?!? Amazing. Honestly, delicious.

Positive : Good house in general. Generally well equipped with a nice swimming pool and terraces. Kids enjoyed it. Negative : location wise, highway passing a hundred meter over it, trucks making noise. Dogs in the neighbouring house barking all night and the field in front used a dump. Some construction materials, stone and sand were thrown by 3 trucks in a back and forth movement during a complete day of Saturday making our day awful ( not the owner fault). Some sofas a bit dusty. At the end, we were absolutely unlucky to break an old coffee cup just on our way out and the owner wanted to charge for a Vase as well ( unfair). She wrongfully thought it was a revenge from our side ( sad). So we entered in a sad argument about it with the owner. We settled at the end but we are a bit bitter about this experience that considering all could have ended better. If you come at 18:00 prepare to tip the maid because her day finishes at 14:00.

Response from Alex:
This review is a little misleading - there is not a dump in front of the house!!! There was some illegal dumping of construction dirt while she stayed, which was truly unfortunate, but I didn't know about it in time to call the authorities. In addition, I did request that she tip the housekeeper $7US for waiting for her arrival for four hours.

My family and I had a fantastic stay at Alex's gorgeous, thoughtfully decorated home with great views of the city below. We had 4 days to spend touring the city and relaxing at the house. Everything is as described and better. We were all very comfortable in the home, with plenty of space to have independence or come together for meals. One of the best parts of our stay was Amalia... such a lovely person and wonderful cook. Our only regret was not having her cook us dinner (we only had breakfasts). She was very patient with our limited Spanish and also helped us find an affordable ride to the airport. The house is up a steep hill which was easy to walk down to town (about a 15 minute walk through interesting neighborhoods) but a little tricky coming back (especially for my mom who wasn't too great with walking uphill) but a cab was easy enough to get in town and come back. We would definitely recommend a stay here!

I fell in love with San Miguel de Allende on my first visit in 2000. I came with my very young children to learn Spanish, and we had a wonderful adventure.
Since then I have made it my second home. We love the climate, the beauty, the cultural offerings, the adventure and especially the warm and welcoming Mexican people.
