Les Village in which La Kubu is located is special -- it offers the sea, the hillsides spring and waterfalls, and mountain forest and caves. Its local Hindu culture is strong and the ebb and flow of life here is governed by the tides, the moon, and ever-recurring Hindu ceremonies.
La Kubu is only 200 meters away from the sea where you can have a leisurely walk or jog on the elevated and tiled seafront promenade. You can swim with the local villagers and snorkel the fringing reefs a few meters away from the coast.
Link up with Sea Communities eco-tourism program and you can scuba dive, plant corals and do coral reef rebuilding, teach English to village kids, go pelagic fishing at night and ornamental fishing in the morning.
Walk around the village and experience its many temples, its public bath, morning wet market. It's hillsides is a veritable orchard -- rambutans, coconuts, cloves, mangoes interspersed with the fragrant and beautiful frangipanis.
The village pride, Yeh Mempeh Waterfalls, set in a caldera-like forested enclosure, is 20-30 minutes walk away from La Kubu (or 10 minutes if you motorbike part of the way). Here you can have a torrential bathe and pounding water massage.
The villagers are friendly. They will smile and greet you on the road. No one would follow you selling T-shirts or pester you with souvenirs and shades for sale.
There are professional masseuse in the village and they can do villa service upon request.
Les is a walkable village and we encourage you to experience it on foot. If you must hurry there are ojeks (for rent motorcycles with driver) who can ferry you anywhere in the village for IDR5,000 to IDR10,000.
Singaraja, Bali's second largest city and city closest to Les, is 45 minutes away by private car. You can also ride ojeks (motorcycles with drivers) for negotiated rates.
Also 45 minutes away is Tulamben, a famous wreck and coral garden dive site.
1 hour away by car are Kintamani, Lovina and Amed. 1.5 to 2 hour away is Ubud. Denpasar/Sanur is 3 hours away.
Other Things to Note
Transportation from the airport or any point in Bali to La Kubu is available upon request.
For those who are driving from Denpasar, take the road going to Ubud and up to Kintamani. Where the road branches into two -- one for Kubutambahan and one for Madenan/Tejakula follow the road to Madenan/Tejakula until you reach the coastal road in Bondalem. Take a right turn heading to Amlapura. You will pass the village of Tejakula. Les comes next. The bridge separating it from Tejakula has road signs "DESA LES" and 'WATERFALLS". Take a left turn on the 3rd street to your left from the bridge. The corner of this street has a large red signboard with "SEA COMMUNITIES" and several arrows. Follow this local road until you see a small store to the left. La Kubu is beside this small store. You can reach us by mobile phone for further directions.
Made was a wonderful host! He made me feel so welcome and ensured I felt safe and comfortable at all times! He really made my stay in Bali unforgettable. The room is quite large with a comfy bed, a TV area, speakers with an AUX cord, and washroom. The Villa is in a beautiful garden with 3 other private villas, and a kitchen house that guests are free to use. It is a 7 minute walk down to the ocean where you can swim or watch the boats go out to see to fish.
On the drive from the airport we went though Bali and stopped at numerous locations to look around and see some cultural sights. My personal favorite being were we went to see coffee and cacao grow and trying cat poop coffee!
Every day he asked me what I wanted to do and made a plan. I had the opportunity to go to Made's temple for a ceremony in traditional dress! We also walked through his village (right outside the gated villa) and met some of the local people. Every day we ate traditional Balinese food. I felt very lucky to spend such an amazing time eating local and being immersed into their culture and traditions. I will most definitely returning to La Kubu and keeping in touch with Made to continue exploring Bali!!
An amazing villa in a small fishing village! Don't forget ear plugs!! (The roosters and dogs will welcome the sunrise)
My sister and I truly enjoyed our 3 night stay at La Kubu because of the quaint location and hospitable people. The room was incredibly comfortable (soft bed, comfortable fan) and well set up, and the amenities (kitchen, laundry) were very accessible to guests. Best of all was Made's kindness, he helped us arrange some tours and explained the religion and history of the area. We also met the housekeeper, Agus, who invited us to a small Balinese ceremony. It was an unique, beautiful and humbling experience that we would never forget. We thank Made and his family, Agus and the other village people for being very kind, generous, patient and open to sharing their culture. For any traveler looking to observe or partake in the peaceful and authentic daily life of Bali, La Kubu is an ideal location. We hope to be back and to reconnect with our new friends. Take care!
A very quiet place with the beach just a few meters away and the les waterfall about 10 minutes ride away. It is easy to get around with good warungs (eating place) nearby. Mede and his niece has been great in making sure that our stay there is a pleasant one. Indeed it was. A very well maintained place. Will definitely come back the next time I'm in town.
Made has a lovely house in a gorgeous village. Can see so many stars just with naked eyes!! I get up early to see the sunrise and made told me there could be dolphins jumping around sometime. Made pick us up at Ubud and take us to see the volcano, waterfall and other interesting places, and take us to the airport. There are so many tools you can use at his house. Will definitely come again!!
Made was a wonderful host and also guide, very reliable and kind. Unfortunately I got ill and he took me to the doctors and translated everything. We learned a lot about Balinese culture through him. He took us to see other places in the area around Les, too. His villas are really nice, in a lovely, spacious garden. After Les we had the pleasure meating his wife and gorgeous children at his home in Denpasar. My little baby daughter fell in love with Made and then also with his children.
Made is what every Airbnb host should aim to . He was present and discreet. He was available and proud to introduce us to his village. He even welcomed us in Denpasar where we got a his wife cooking classes ... the kids loved playing with his kids . Les really is a beautiful place, and the facilities are exactly like in the pictures. Hurry , Escape tourist areas hurry to La Kubi and discover the real Bali
I had extremely valuable experience staying here for two days - further beyond expectation - thanks to the beautiful lovely villa and more than anything, the excellent hospitality of the host Made.
The villa La Kubu is located in north of Bali island, away from all the tourist areas, so definitely the best location to enjoy peaceful real Bali life. All villa gardening is decollated by Made himself, very beautiful and natural, that I feel at home. The room was kept very clean and comfortable. Only 2 mins walk to beach, where we enjoyed snorkel and watched sunrise. Made caught a big fish there and cooked us fish BBQ at night, which was amazing tasty. All neighborhoods are just so nice, they look very happy and always smile back to us, making us feel very welcomed.
And I cannot be grateful enough to Made’s hospitality. First of all, he prepared flesh Rambutan when picking up me at the airport, and guided all the way driving to his lovely place in La Kubu. He introduced and took us to a lot of local restaurant, with reasonable price and great quality, such as a beautiful restaurant inside of the rice field, nice view seaside restaurant, volcano view restaurant. Also he drove us to see the waterfall, which is breathtaking. I enjoyed the refreshing hiking all surrounded by the nature until the waterfall. He also drove long way taking us to hot spring, oil massage, and he invited us the see a local Indonesian singer’s show at night, where we saw many local people, and experienced the local life. The stars at night were also incredible beautiful. We had lot of chat together with Made, about life about everything, which I enjoyed very much.
Made is not just a great host, but also a great chef, driver, guide and a friend to me now. As being an airbnb host myself, there were so much to learn from such a great host as Made. I already miss Made and his cute dogs chacha / patrok so much. Next time I visit Bali, I will definitely stay there and meet him again. I recommend here to everyone who visits Bali.
