This area is called Bella Vista:
Translating to “beautiful sight,” Bella Vista was the first Philly neighborhood settled by Italian immigrants. The original heritage informs much of what exists today, but the family-oriented residential pocket has blossomed into a fascinating microcosm of South Philadelphia itself.
Bella Vista’s best-known feature is the Ninth Street Italian Market, the oldest operational open-air hub of its kind in America. Welcoming the presence of other cultures — Vietnamese and Mexican, most prominently — has helped the area grow into much more than the sum of its once-monocultural parts.
The South Philadelphia neighborhood has much to offer visitors, but its greatest asset might be its staggering roster of dining options, from city-best brunch spots to late-night ethnic explorations.
Philly’s historic Italian Market stretches along Ninth Street, from Wharton Street north to Fitzwater Street. First established in the late 19th century by Italian immigrants, the Market has grown in more recent years to feature many Latino- and Asian-owned businesses that harmonize with Ninth Street’s beloved institutions, peddling coffee, cheese, meat, pasta, sandwiches, produce and much more.
It’s not as quaint as an Italian Market stroll, but the area of Washington Avenue between Sixth and 11th streets is an invaluable stretch for anyone curious about Philly’s penchant for international flavor. No-frills taquerias, Southeast Asian soup parlors and sandwich shops, higher-end sit-down restaurants and bars of all varieties populate this corridor, anchored on its western edge by Wing Phat Plaza, a big Vietnamese shopping/restaurant center.

Year after year, Philadelphia is rated as one of the best walking cities in the country. Aside from walking, Philadelphia’s excellent transit system is the best way to get around town.
Bella Vista is minutes from SEPTA’s north-south Broad Street subway line. Two bus lines, the 47 and the 23, run straight through the neighborhood.
The closest subway stop is at Broad and South on the Broad Street line. The closest bus stop is at the corner of 12th and Catharine (one block away). There are always cabs at the corner of Broad and Catharine and Zip Car is available less than 2 blocks away.
Philly is also considered the best biking city of all major cities in the US. "Philadelphia now boasts some of the highest rates of bicycling in the entire country. Not only that, but of the nation’s 10 biggest cities, Philadelphia’s bicycle mode share (which means the percentage of commuters who bike to work) is twice as high as the next-best major city, Chicago."

I made a pretty late booking and the host was able to accommodate me right away. My check in was pretty late and he gave me a really brief rundown of the place because of the time. Everything was perfect. The cats were great. made me feel at home since i have a cat. The room was downstairs. I am going to say they probably don't use central air, but there was a portable unit and i made the mistake of turning it too low and woke up freezing. but it works great. The location was convenient to where i needed to be. Street parking was pretty simple to find. Just be aware, philly drivers are bad. :/
Daniel was a great host and made us feel very comfortable. What I loved was how prepared he was. He would provide maps, pamphlets, delivery menus of local restaurants, and much more. Defiantly will stay with Daniel if I were to ever visit Philadelphia again.
P.S. the cats were super friendly and adorable.
Nice and clean room in the basement. The bathroom is shared with the other roommates. Dan is very nice and gave a lot of information about Philadelphia and the places to visit or to hang out. The rooftop is also a great place to chill.
Dan was a great host! Upon arriving, he took the time to show me around the house and gave me a bunch of great restaurant/bar recommendations. He knows the city well and is willing to share his knowledge. I felt very welcomed in his home. I also appreciated how prompt Dan was with his communication.
The location is great and is within walking distance to all major attractions. There are 3 cats in the house, and as some of the other reviewers mentioned, they will snuggle up to you while you're sleeping. It was a little strange having a cat walk all over my body while I was trying to sleep. They're very friendly cats though.
Great experience at Daniel's house. Only one thing is that we were downstaire of the house. Just a little bit noisy. He made easy to check in and out.
Only one night here, but he is a good boy!! Good house!! Happy he host us!
Dan's house is very clean and spacious, it has three floors and you can see the beautiful sunset on the roof. The location of the house is very good, just blocks away from Italian market and walking distance to the main attractions. I especially love the cats in the house, if you also love cats, just choose Dan's house!
