A little paradise in Sri Lanka

House - Entire home/apt · Muhudu Mawata, Tangalle, Southern Province 82000, Sri Lanka

A charming and functionnal holiday house in the heart of a property 3 minutes away from one of Sri lanka's most beautiful beaches, Silent Beach

The Space

About the property
Our holiday house is a haven of peace located close to one of the most beautiful beaches of Sri Lanka, about 200 km from Colombo.

It was designed ideally for a couple wishing to enjoy a relaxing vacation (double bed with mosquito net and fan, reading spot, closet, fully equipped american kitchen, shower with separate WC, veranda...). There is no hot water in the shower but since the temperature is always around 81°F (27/28°C), no one has ever felt that as a problem...

From the top of the property, you can admire the breathtaking view of the sea and the nearby peninsulas, and some pretty spectacular sunsets. If you take a walk in the property, you will probably be able to observe the local fauna : tropical birds (peacocks, woodpeckers, kingfishers, sea-eagles...), monkeys, etc. And after sunset, stars and fireflies will always be there to enlighten your nights...

Guest Access

We have built a 4 suites boutique hotel at the top of the property, with a restaurant where you'll be able to take your meals if you don't feel like cooking. Wifi is available there.

But if you prefer, you may also remain totally independant and do your own shopping at the local supermarket, in Tangalle, 4 km away from the house (7-10 minutes by tuk-tuk). The town also has a permanent market, as well as a large weekly market overflowing with mouthwatering exotic local fruit and vegetables.

Interaction with Guests

We live in Paris, but come every three-four months to our place in Sri Lanka. We'll be happy to meet you and give you good advices about the places to see, but when we are absent, our team will take good care of you.

The Neighborhood

Little Tamarind is in the heart of of fishermen village. The people are very friendly. There are two main beaches, 3 and 5 minutes away (walking distance) : when Silent beach is too rough, you can go to the fishermen's bay, which is always quiet.
The villagers are very friendly, the children will say hello on the way to the beach!

Getting around

The easiest way is to take a taxi at the airport. The drive is around 4H30 long and costs around 75 €. The house is 4 km west of Tangalle, on Galle road.

The train of course will be cheaper. Nevertheless, after a long flight, it might be quite tiring : count 1h to go from the airport to the train station, then 5h30 for the journey and another 45 minutes from Matara (closest train station from Tangalle) to Little Tamarind.

Same for the bus, you'll have to find where to catch it.

Najee, our manager, will brief you on all the beaches and sites to be visited in the surrounding area: the Mulkirigala Temple and Dondra Lighthouse are half an hour away. The city of Galle and Yalla National Park, a two hours drive away, are also worth a visit. Najee can arrange the drive for you (by tuk-tuk, scooter or car).

Overall Guest Satisfaction

Check In
  • We had a lovely stay here with our son. A nice, small space that had everything we needed. It is a well designed, modern little studio apartment (not really a one bedroom as bed is in the main room overlooked by galley style kitchen). Great water pressure in the shower meant it was easy to blast off all the sand from the beach!

Great location with 2 very easily walkable beautiful beaches nearby. The closest beach was down the road to the left of the property and was stunning and lined with palms. The current was very strong though, so not great for our infant son. The beach that is down the road to the right however, about five minutes walk, was perfect. Local fisherman tie their boats up and many locals use it, which is a nice change (we're not fans do only being surrounded by tourists!).

All of the hosts on the property were lovely. Our first night we had dinner up in the restaurant and they fully entertained our son which meant we had a bit of peace. They even pulled out a bunch toys for him and let us borrow them for our stay. A baby high chair even appeared on our balcony without us asking for it. They did everything one would hope for.

Our only problem with our stay was the heat. Most reviews said that there was a lovely natural breeze that kept it cool. We certainly did not experience that! It was absolutely sweltering. If you stayed up at the top of the property the breeze was amazing - obviously - as it was the top of a hill. Little tamarind however, is at the bottom of the hill and there wasn't a swaying brach in site. The fan wasn't positioned well either. It is in the middle of the room, not close to the bed. It also isn't very powerful. We ended up dragging the bed over so that we caught a bit of the fan and didn't completely bake from inside out. Not as worried about myself though, it did concern me that son was so hot even when sleeping.

The entrance to the property is located directly in front of little tamarind, so all guests or staff drive directly past you and open the loud gate frequently. Wasn't quite as private as I had pictured it in my mind. I suppose we thought the main entrance would be at the top of the hill near the main building.

Overall though, we had a great stay and would still recommend to others.

  • I very much enjoyed staying here. The Little House was nicely maintained. It was within a 5 minute walk of a very beautiful beach. The host and her staff were very helpful in that they arranged for a car to collect us from the airport and prepared some really nice food for us. The location was good for us because we spent all our time on the beach. If you wanted to go into town, the staff at Little Tamarind could call you a tuk-tuk. Recommended!

  • Our stay at Little Tamarind was very nice. The little house is situated in a calm place in the south of Sri lanka with beautiful beaches nearby. The main building is just a short (but steep) walk up where you can have great meals three times a day and use the internet (when it works). We had a look at the rooms in the main building and it is very luxurious.

  • A perfect little retreat in a beautiful and very quiet stretch of the coast. The staff were beyond helpful and made our stay fantastic. Thanks Asha and team!

  • When you select something like this in the depths of winter in northern England you take a chance. In the case of Little Tamarind it was the best chance I ever took. So much in fact we stayed for 2 more weeks! It's everything it says and more. Najee the manager is a gem and he is accompanied by a dedicated and hardworking team who are always keen to please. The location is ideal, we alternated between 7 beaches, and the food was superb with breakfast being the highlight. The chef was always willing to try new dishes with a good balance between western and traditional Sri Lankan. There was always something for everyone. I loved the location, the staff, the food, the beaches and generally everything and have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone.

  • We had 5 wonderful days at little tamarind. It was an excellent stay with the most perfect little house, made for two. Nice restaurant at the hotel with perfect service and the most wonderful beach we've ever seen only a few minutes walk away. Not to recommend the beach for children though, cause of the big waves. But we highly recommend it for couples who wants a relaxing stay close to beach.

  • This place is literally a paradise ! A perfect little house in a protected area, 100 meters from the most beautiful beach we have seen in our life.. A large and desertic beach, with a really nice sea !

The staff is really really kind, and the owner that were there were also fantastic with us and really welcoming.
The restaurant and hotel that has been built only 50 meters from the house is really nice : the food is perfect (what a cooker !!) with fresh products and fair price, and the view is "WOWWW" with the fresh air that comes to you.

I definitely recommend this place that has relaxed us for the next 6 month, and, maybe our next visit (why not in the hotel that has been built with the rooms that are really impressive in terms of comfort and decoration).

  • A smashing little hauschen near the best ever beach which we loved. The sea is unpreditictable which we found exciting but perhaps not great for small kids as undertow is strong and waves can be high but if you are willling to keep an eye, fun can be had. Apart from that, the sand is pure and the cove, straight from paradise.
Ate once at the restaurant in house which was very nice but liked to adventure out so didnt go again.Very nice place.

  • We spent two nights at Little Tamarind as part of a 3 week tour around Sri Lanka. The beach nearby is absolutely beautiful and remarkably quiet. The water is a little rough but once you pass the rougher waves and swim further out, it's very calm and easy to swim. Little Tamarind is quite basic and be aware that there isn't any glass on some of the windows so it's a bit open to the elements (i.e. insects!!) but the bed was comfortable and there'(email hidden) which helps a lot. There is a kitchen which has all the basics (it would have been nice to have been supplied some tea bags). The shower is powerful but there isn't any hot water, given that the weather is so warm, this wasn't a huge problem for us. The owners are building a hotel at the top of the hill and the restaurant there served us food for breakfast and dinner. It was a little chaotic and the communication meant there were a few misunderstandings about what was available and at what time..but the food was really delicious and reasonably priced. I'm sure these were just teething problems while the hotel was getting ready to open for guests. Najee, the manager was very welcoming and helped organise a taxi for us to our next destination. It was lovely to meet the owners Asha and David too, who happened to be there during our stay. They are very friendly and we wish them all the best with their new venture.
