The Space

"The perfect alternative from staying at some nameless, lifeless hotel" - Bill G (guest)

Make the most of everyday of your Costa Rica vacation!

Why stay in someones spare room or a hotel by the airport when you can stay in a detached studio in a private park setting slurping coffee from one of the finest coffee growing regions in the world!

At the Coffee Garden Meditation Center and Bird Sanctuary enjoy our bush-to-cup coffee while strolling through a working boutique coffee ranch in the early morning sun among artisan coffee plants, listening to birds chirp to the background sounds of a gentle river in our 2 acre meditation garden set in a coffee plantation.

******** Our Coffee ********

One of the benefits of staying with us is enjoying our featured truly atresanal old world coffee. Our coffee fruit is sun dried. They are not sent to a mill to be striped, washed and dried and then sent to a plant for processing as is all commercial coffee fruit and beans. We pay our pickers double to harvest only the reddest coffee fruit at the peak of ripeness. Then our coffee beans remains in the dried fruit until roasting. This triples harvesting costs but as we sell comparatively little roasted coffee (100 kilos a year as we do it as a hobby), you get a rare treat that coffee lovers treasure - coffee harvested and dried in an antique style unavailable to the mass market. That is why our product is truly artesenal.

Along with the purchase of a kilo of coffee or more (2 lbs - great for gifts) you receive an autographed copy of Phil Baker's Costa Rica Now / Travel Live and Own in Paradise. This highly informative 500 page book is a $25 value.

  • We enjoyed our stay with Phil. He was extremely hospitable and has a wealth of knowledge about Costa Rica and its culture. His stories are interesting; it is cool listening to him while enjoying his coffee, pound cake and fruit. The view of the lights over San Jose is beautiful from his coffee ranch. The room is very nice and clean. The grounds and foliage are very pretty. My friend arrived not feeling well and Phil graciously drove him to town and helped him obtain medical attention. We stayed just one night, the last of our week in Costa Rica. His directions made the quick drive to the airport easy the next morning as Costa Rica really isn’t too fond of street names and signs which makes driving and navigation a challenge.

  • We loved our stay at the "Casa de dos leons" with Phil. He was extremely hospitable and a wealth of information about Costa Rica and its culture. It was fun to hear his stories upon our arrival over cups of his garden's roasted coffee and local tico pound cake (yum!). The coffee garden grounds were stunning at sunset and equally magical at night when we watched the fireflies from the meditation garden and bench lookout.

We went to dinner at a local restaurant called Los Potreros and had some amazing ceviche per Phil's recommendation. We got to the place via a very quick taxi ride around 7pm on a Saturday night, and by the time we left there was a line out the door and karaoke had just begun--very fun people watching and reasonably priced food.

The lights of San Jose at night were also gorgeous to see from the hills of his ranch, and we even saw some fireworks! We only stayed 1 night because we came from Quepos and had an early flight out of San Jose the next morning. Phil was kind enough to call us a cab the night before that drove us the 25-min ride to the airport bright and early at 4:30am.

We'd definitely recommend staying at the coffee ranch--just make sure if you're arriving by cab to take a red local taxi. Let's just say we didn't have the best luck with an airport taxi driver who offered us a ride after deboarding from a Sansa flight. Make sure you say hello to his friendly dogs too! Pura Vida!

  • We loved staying with Phil! Such a great way to end our trip with a day on a coffee farm playing bocce ball and relaxing in his beautiful garden. His food recommendations were wonderful and the restaurant near his house had the best ceviche I had had on this trip to Costa Rica.

Phil was such a great host with interesting stories. He also makes a mean plantain and avocado sandwich for breakfast, so make sure to ask for it! Driving to the airport was also very easy the next morning.

Thank you for the kingly review. I am glad you found it easy finding your way around Costa Rica and to the airport. . Ki amd Wei Ling you were wonderful guests - Glad you and Ki and the coffee made it back safely - please come back soon! Pura Vida.

  • Our stay with Phil was really good.
He helped us get a taxi to and from places and is really friendly.
We only stayed there one night so we weren't able to really enjoy the grounds, but the place was clean and safe. We would recommend it to guests who want to stay somewhere a bit closer to San Jose without being right in the city.

"We would recommend it to guests who want to stay somewhere a bit closer to San Jose without being right in the city." Thank you Melissa - many of our guest feel the same way about our accommodations, grounds and location. It makes us happy to open our home to guest like you. Eres buena nota!

  • Phil's property is beautiful—a great place not too far from San Jose. Leave extra time if you're driving because it's very easy to get lost.

    Response from Phil:

It's easy to get lost ANYWHERE in Costa Rica! Not just to our ranch. WE ARE A COUNTRY WITHOUT NUMBERED ADDRESSES AND VERY FEW STREET SIGNS THROUGHOUT THE NATION. SO PLEASE BUDGET EXTRA TIME NO MATTER WHERE YOU GO - Also some people are inherently better at direction and like Kiera don't speak Spanish, so its even more of an adventure! I am glad you thought our ranch was beautiful, You seemed very happy here = Pura Vida -

  • Phil was very open and entertaining. He loved telling stories and hearing about ours. The cottage is very good; a nice stay before we left home after two weeks CR.
    Thanks Phil! Pieter & Tammy

  • Phil's coffee ranch was the perfect, relaxing ending to our adventures and vacation in Costa Rica. Phil's property is exquisitely beautiful, the detached studio met all of our needs, and him and everyone we met on in his house were all delightfully pleasant.

From going for a stroll in his garden, to the breakfast in the morning, to the delicious coffee that he had grown on sight, everything was exactly how it should be or better. My girlfriend and I had stayed at another airbnb place in Manual Antonio the few days before and had a horrendous time. I couldn't help but tell Phil that our trip to Costa Rica had both the worst and the best that airbnb has to offer, and I mean that to anyone.

This place is the best accommodations Costa Rica has to offer at this price. Worth every penny.

"This place is the best accommodations Costa Rica has to offer at this price. Worth every penny." Thank you Sam. We try to achieve not only value but experience. Not just our guest's experience at our ranch, but we hope to add to their experience throughout the country by offering suggestions as to where to go and not to go depending on the season. Whether you begin or end your trip with us of just hang out here as a home base to explore the central valley we are here to help make your trip a success - Pura Vida Sam!

  • Very hospitable host and lovely place to stay.

  • While our visit with Phil was very brief, his accomodations were probably the most elegant and spacious of all the places we stayed.
And the best part was Alberto, who gave 2 hour massage for my husband and I for $40! He also recommended a restaurant that my husband went for takeout. Thank you Phil, and sorry again for arriving late. If you do visit Phil allow time as traffic through Heredia was slow-going.

    February 2014
  • We loved staying at Phil's little oasis tucked in the hills just outside of San Jose. The space was just perfect and the grounds were beautiful and fun to explore. Phil was a terrific and warm host who treated me and my partner to some of the best coffee I've ever tasted, a home-cooked breakfast, and great conversation! We so enjoyed our stay and recommend this unique spot to anyone visiting Costa Rica. We hope to make it back sometime soon to explore more of San Isidro and spend more time sipping coffee and relaxing at Phil's boutique coffee ranch. Pura vida!

About
Hi / Hola! I am a native Californian (San Diego) living in Costa Rica with my daughter. My life vocation is real estate (since 1978). Along with our family home on the lagoon in Cardiff by the sea and several other rental homes, we own 100 acres of vineyard property in Temecula and now a small coffee plantation in Costa Rica. I have been in and out of Costa Rica for many years and have property in Manuel Antonio. Besides authoring Costa Rica Now, the all in one travel guide to Living and Owning in Paradise, I write interpretations of Asian Classics such as the Tao Te Ching. I am also a professional Costa Rica Consultant. Taoist and Buddhist kung fu and meditation are part of my self definition along with being a father which is job One. Having me host you is like having a personal Costa Rican consultant. **** Contact me before you plan your trip and after you book your stay with us and I will steer you to great places to visit according to you length of stay in Costa Rica and what you would like to do here; surf, zip line, deserted beaches, white sand full service beaches, bird watching, hot springs, witnessing volcanoes and waterfalls and gem destinations off the beaten track, Finally, I do not host people for the money. I host for the experience of meeting new people. You will find me engaging if you want to talk, or accommodating if you want to have your privacy. I think relationships are the most important and my guests make or break my experience with Airbnb. ***From Airbnb, "Airbnb is built on relationships. Help other people get to know you.Tell them about the things you like: What are 5 things you can’t live without? Share your favorite travel destinations, books, movies, shows, music, food. Tell them about you: Do you have a life motto? *** Ok - so here goes - The five things I cannot live without would be:without would be:1 - Freedom, 2- Every day doing what I want to do, 3 - Friendship 4 - Living in nature. 5 - Writing ***I am a kung fu man who practiced and taught ancient Buddhist and Taoist choi li ho fut hung kung fu san soo for over 20 years and still live and learn according to kung fu concepts and Asian philosophy. ***By far my favorite movie is Casablanca as I am a romantic at heart. ***Favorite books? That is a hard choice. Of the ancient classics, I like Stephen Mitchell's translation of the Tao Te Ching and Miyamoto Musahshi's Book of Five Rings. I consider Loving What Is by Byron Katie to be a modern classic. Her practical approach to examining your thoughts creates freedom in your life. Indispensable reading if you actually practice what she calls "The Work." ***Life Motto? Well I am a kung fu man, so it would be the same as my kung fu teacher, "You can take my life, but you can never take my confidence and character." - Grand master of ancient kung fu, Jimmy H. He got things done in a most artful way. ***When I was a small child, I remember sitting on my uncle's lap and he sang to me - "Phil, Phil from San Juan Hill, Never worked and never will!" hahahaha well it affected me intuitively and I quickly learned that life is lived with great satisfaction if you cannot quite tell if you are working or playing. Then, and only then, work ceases to exist and you do what you want to do every day of your life. To me that is "the" definition of success, and to be in sync with the Tao.
