"The perfect alternative from staying at some nameless, lifeless hotel" - Bill G (guest)
Make the most of everyday of your Costa Rica vacation!
Why stay in someones spare room or a hotel by the airport when you can stay in a detached studio in a private park setting slurping coffee from one of the finest coffee growing regions in the world!
At the Coffee Garden Meditation Center and Bird Sanctuary enjoy our bush-to-cup coffee while strolling through a working boutique coffee ranch in the early morning sun among artisan coffee plants, listening to birds chirp to the background sounds of a gentle river in our 2 acre meditation garden set in a coffee plantation.
******** Our Coffee ********
One of the benefits of staying with us is enjoying our featured truly atresanal old world coffee. Our coffee fruit is sun dried. They are not sent to a mill to be striped, washed and dried and then sent to a plant for processing as is all commercial coffee fruit and beans. We pay our pickers double to harvest only the reddest coffee fruit at the peak of ripeness. Then our coffee beans remains in the dried fruit until roasting. This triples harvesting costs but as we sell comparatively little roasted coffee (100 kilos a year as we do it as a hobby), you get a rare treat that coffee lovers treasure - coffee harvested and dried in an antique style unavailable to the mass market. That is why our product is truly artesenal.
Along with the purchase of a kilo of coffee or more (2 lbs - great for gifts) you receive an autographed copy of Phil Baker's Costa Rica Now / Travel Live and Own in Paradise. This highly informative 500 page book is a $25 value.

Phil's coffee ranch was the perfect, relaxing ending to our adventures and vacation in Costa Rica. Phil's property is exquisitely beautiful, the detached studio met all of our needs, and him and everyone we met on in his house were all delightfully pleasant.
From going for a stroll in his garden, to the breakfast in the morning, to the delicious coffee that he had grown on sight, everything was exactly how it should be or better. My girlfriend and I had stayed at another airbnb place in Manual Antonio the few days before and had a horrendous time. I couldn't help but tell Phil that our trip to Costa Rica had both the worst and the best that airbnb has to offer, and I mean that to anyone.
This place is the best accommodations Costa Rica has to offer at this price. Worth every penny.
"This place is the best accommodations Costa Rica has to offer at this price. Worth every penny." Thank you Sam. We try to achieve not only value but experience. Not just our guest's experience at our ranch, but we hope to add to their experience throughout the country by offering suggestions as to where to go and not to go depending on the season. Whether you begin or end your trip with us of just hang out here as a home base to explore the central valley we are here to help make your trip a success - Pura Vida Sam!
While our visit with Phil was very brief, his accomodations were probably the most elegant and spacious of all the places we stayed.
And the best part was Alberto, who gave 2 hour massage for my husband and I for $40! He also recommended a restaurant that my husband went for takeout. Thank you Phil, and sorry again for arriving late. If you do visit Phil allow time as traffic through Heredia was slow-going.
We loved staying at Phil's little oasis tucked in the hills just outside of San Jose. The space was just perfect and the grounds were beautiful and fun to explore. Phil was a terrific and warm host who treated me and my partner to some of the best coffee I've ever tasted, a home-cooked breakfast, and great conversation! We so enjoyed our stay and recommend this unique spot to anyone visiting Costa Rica. We hope to make it back sometime soon to explore more of San Isidro and spend more time sipping coffee and relaxing at Phil's boutique coffee ranch. Pura vida!
Phil was nothing short of a fantastic host!
We will most definitely recommend his house as a first stop for any Costa Rican tour. He was so welcoming making my boyfriend and I feel like we were in a home away from home. The coffee garden and meditation gardens were gorgeous, impeccable, superb. The small town of San Isidro was very charming. We joined Phil on his Sunday outing to la feria and that was a great way to be introduced to everyday culture and some great eats. The mango was delicious, even though it was out of season, it was probably the best mango I've eaten. Ever! If you go, try what we call the "snot tea", you may not regret the taste, but the consistency was interesting! Lol!
Here is my list of advice: If you follow all of Phil's directions, you will not get lost, but be sure to follow them to a T! We didn't and we got a little lost. Once we oriented ourselves at the Plaza, it was easy to follow the directions from the single light on the square.
Try his homegrown coffee, go to Braulio Carrillo and ride the zip line (we saw a sloth, which was my highlight of the trip!) Enjoy the culture, try a cerveza con hielo, speak to a friendly local who doesn't know your language just as much as you don't know theirs. Thank you Phil!!!!
Mucho gusto Matt and Libby - and thanks for the kingly review - You guys were great - the kind of guests that make hosting worth it - Thanks for the good vibes. I am so glad I helped start you on the right foot - I hope you had a great vacation - please come back very soon! Pura Vida Matt and Libby - Dos buena notas! Besos
Amazing place to visit! Phil and Kalina were incredibly welcoming and helpful. Can't say enough good things about my visit. Likely will be back when I find my way to Costa Rica again. Accommodations, host, communication ahead of time, everything was great.
A gorgeous place where nature abounds amidst stunning views of San Jose and the Central Valley. The meditation garden is much larger than the description implies. Trails wind through the coffee plants, flowers, and trees, with different views at every turn and a lovely creek at the bottom. If you like dogs, Phil's two dogs love to go with you! (They also may bark at night, so bring earplugs if that bothers you.) The room is separate but just across a courtyard from the main house. Being the only guest means an opportunity for much personal attention from Phil - a great host and very interesting person! The room is very nicely appointed and comfortable. Nights can be chilly since it's heading up the mountain. Speaking of the mountain, I walked a couple miles up the road through stunning mountain scenery. A cute chocolate factory/lunch spot called Sibu is an easy drive. You can reserve tours in the morning. My wife got an amazing two hour massage for $40 from an experienced masseuse who came to our room. The place can be hard to find, so be prepared to ask directions. The coffee, grown and processed on site, was amazing.
My wife Valery and I enjoyed a wonderful 3 days in this idyllic part of Costa Rica. The room we stayed in at the ranch was ideal for our needs set on beautiful well manicured grounds and within walking distance to Heredia and to scenic countryside. Being the only rental space on the property provided great privacy and we enjoyed the casual relaxed breakfasts with Phil and stimulating conversation. Undoubtedly we would recommend this to anyone wanting a quiet "get away". In addition I had an incredible 2 hour massage from a very gifted masseur called Albierto which was second to none and incredibly reasonable. Overall a great time.
Phil is a very welcoming host with a great energy and the property is amazing too! A great place to land once in Costa Rica to get acclimated to your surroundings. Phil's coffee and stuffed french toast are muy rico. The grounds are beautiful and the room is very comfortable. We couldn't have asked for anything better!
The Coffee Ranch and Phil were great!
The grounds of the Ranch and the room are 100% as seen on airbnb. We had a lovely morning exploring the meditation garden (absolutely amazing!) and enjoying the view of San Jose. Phil was a very kind host and his family cooked us a very nice breakfast before we headed out for the airport.
I would warn travelers that it is a bit difficult to find, so driving in the dark may not be recommended :)
AND, definitely get some coffee!
Thank you Claire for the nice review - Driving in the dark is not recommended anywhere in Costa Rica as the streets can be poorly lit - that said, 90% of our guest have no trouble finding us as we are for the most part no harder to find than anywhere else here. We really enjoyed your stay with us. You guys were great - please come see us again. Pura Vida!
we spend 5 days and had a really good time there. thanks to tania and her help. she was always ready to help us no matter which kind of answer or request we had. very nice located with a great view just 10 minutes (by car) from san jose.
