"The perfect alternative from staying at some nameless, lifeless hotel" - Bill G (guest)
Make the most of everyday of your Costa Rica vacation! Why stay in someone's spare room or a hotel by the airport when you can stay in a detached studio in a private park setting slurping coffee from one of the finest coffee growing regions in the world!
At the Coffee Garden Meditation Center and Bird Sanctuary you can enjoy our bush-to-cup coffee while strolling through a working boutique coffee ranch in the early morning sun among 50 year-old coffee plants, listening to birds chirp to the background sounds of a gentle river in our 2-acre meditation garden with 500 feet of river frontage set in a coffee plantation.
This gated, very secure 3-acre estate on the best street in Concepcion de San Isidro de Heredia, is located in the nicest small town in the San Jose Valley. A couple minutes away, restaurant bar Los Portreos features a great selection of quality food and excellent views. It's the real Costa Rica. A place where you would want to live.
Description ~ ~ Our tastefully decorated detached 350 square foot studio has a modern private bath and an expensive queen bed.
Location ~ ~ we are located in San Isidro de Heredia, about 20 minutes outside the capital of San Jose (downtown) in the beautiful coffee country province of Heredia. Our neighborhood is one of the finest in Costa Rica with a mix of ex-patriots and Costa Ricans living on large estates and smaller homes. We are located on the northeast part of the central valley which is the area first to receive the prevailing Caribbean winds blowing the freshest air purified by miles of cloud forests and rain forests spanning the National Park which borders our neighborhood. The village of San Isidro offers a Sunday morning farmer's market and one of the most majestic churches in all of Costa Rica. Here you will also find many smaller restaurants, banks, supermarkets and bakeries.
Coffee ~ ~ One of the benefits of staying with us is enjoying our featured old world style coffee. Our coffee fruit is sun dried. And not sent to a mill to be strip washed and then dried in mechanical dryers later to be sent for processing in an automated warehouse as is all commercial coffee fruit and beans. We pay our pickers double to harvest only the red to purple coffee fruit at the peak of ripeness. We then dry the coffee fruit in the sun for 100 days. Our coffee beans remain in the dried coffee fruit until ready for small-batch roasting. This triples harvesting costs, but you get a rare treat that coffee lovers treasure - coffee harvested and dried in an old-world style - unavailable to the mass market. That is why our product is truly artesenal.
Along with the purchase of 4 bags of coffee or more (great for gifts), upon request (as I sometimes forget), and as long as supply lasts, you receive an autographed copy of Phil Baker's Costa Rica Now / Travel Live and Own in Paradise. Last 200 copies of this Costa Rica cult classic. 500 pages - a $25 value.
Your Host ~ ~ Hi, I'm Phil and have been in Costa Rica for over 25 years and can offer you expert advise on your travels, relocation and real estate needs. I have been very successful living and owning in Costa Rica and have helped many people get the most of their stay here; In the green season we may be able to get you 65% off of Costa Rica's two finest hotels - The Peace Lodge at La Paz Waterfall gardens and The Springs Resort and Spa (personal discounts unavailable to the public).
Massage ~ ~ An hour and a half massage for $40!!!! Trained in Germany our off-site massage professional gives a comprehensive full body massage in the comfort of your room. A perfect way to unwind after a long flight and a great way to end your memorable trip to Costa Rica.
Restaurants ~ ~ Sibu Chocolate factory where you can watch workers hand make chocolate truffles from behind glass and sample awesome chocolate treats is 10 minutes away. The great restaurant Los Portreros with its awesome city light views serves a large variety of fantastic local dishes with generous portions at reasonable prices - and its only a 15 min walk or a 5-minute taxi ride away. This secret spot is known to locals as "the" place to eat and you rarely see tourists there. Excellent food and good service. All our guests love it.
Transportation ~ ~ The bus is 400 meters away. Taxi to San Isidro is $2 one way. The village of San Isidro has banks, several markets, restaurants and coffee shops. There is a zip line about 2 miles away and downtown Heredia with luxury malls and many high-end restaurants is 6 miles away. Buses leave every 15 minutes to Heredia and San Jose, from where you can board direct buses to all parts of Costa Rica. Taxis arrive at out ranch within minutes and the intentional airport is 25 minutes away.
Views ~ ~ The Coffee Garden offers panoramic views of Irazu Volcano, the Tres Marias mountains of Braulio Carrillo National Park, and city lights of San Jose. Poas, Irazu and Barva volcanoes are a hour away.
Attractions ~ ~ La Paz Waterfall Gardens and Rain Forest Adventure zip lines are both easily doable day trips as well as Doka Estates Coffee Tour and Paos Volcano National Park and Braulio Carrillo National Park.
Our clean and modern guesthouse, unique coffee, immaculate gardens, expert advice, and close proximity to downtown San Jose makes The Coffee Garden Boutique Working Coffee Ranch the best bang for your travel buck. See you soon... slurp slurp.

Thank you Phil, for having us. We are delight to stay at your place and special thanks to give us the guest house. After more then 32 hours of traviling your place is a dream place. The beds are realy comfi and tour garden/coffee ranch is beautifull. We didn't know its gone be that big and beautifull. Thanks for your kindness and George the masseur is also great.
We had a wonderful stay in Phil's casita. We were on business and it was the perfect place to come home to for a nice respite after a stressful day. The grounds were extraordinary and we plan to return in a couple weeks and enjoy them more next time when we have the less to do in the area. Phil is there if you need him and very accommodating. He lets you enjoy your stay but if you have questions or needs he takes care of them on the spot. We brought our dogs and they went crazy with all the gardens. I highly recommend The working Coffee Farm.
Thank you Jolene - that was a special review coming from a fellow B&B owner. its not often I have the pleasure of hosting fellow Costa Rican business vets. You and Gary and the kids were wonderful guests - sincerely hope all works out for the best at Doc Machados - I look forward to seeing you two pronto ~
We had a great time at Phil's! We were unsure of our arrival time and he was flexible for whenever we made it in. We were pretty tired from the drive and he gave us suggestions of somewhere close for dinner or said he'd order us a pizza. So nice! We also enjoyed our mornings chatting over coffee from his garden before we started our day. The room itself was spacious and we slept well! The grounds/garden were gorgeous with lovely little places to relax. We'd definitely recommend!
Phil was an excellent host. We were greeted with delicious coffee and a beautiful property. We could have spent all day exploring the expansive coffee garden, but were equally as glad to explore the area. Phil recommended we eat lunch at Sibú, a local chocolate café, and we highly recommend it to anyone visiting. Amazing food, chocolate and great vibes. Phil is very knowledgeable about Costa Rica and is a wonderful resource to have. This is an especially perfect choice for anyone who needs a place close to the airport (we stayed here on our last night in Costa Rica - it made the commute to SJO that much more bearable).
Thank you for the generous review. Many stay here on their first and last nights in CR. For those beginning their vacation with us, we help make your vacation the best it can be. Staying with us on the end of your vacation, we help you squeeze every bit of adventure and beauty out of your final days in Costa Rica - Pura Vida!
A nice little detour from San Jose.
Plus: Phil's backyard coffee garden is nice and cozy.
Minus: We didn't get much sleep due to the all-night barking of local dogs.
If you visit San Isidro be sure to check out Cool Bar. Cool bar.
Phil's coffee ranch was beautiful. We got in later than expected, but we were still welcomed warmly. We were able to walk around the grounds in the morning and saw the amazing gardens. Our stay was short, but we had a lovely time drinking coffee and having breakfast before we had to head to the airport.
Phil is an amazing host! It felt like we were staying with family. He opened his home to my boyfriend and I to share breakfast and many great conversations. He really is a Costa Rica expert, he even helped us with other travel situations all along our journey. Kalina was also very gracious and hospitable, making us delicious coffee, eggs, and french toast with cream cheese and papaya. Yum! The room was nice and clean and the grounds were incredible. We would definitely stay again.
