"The perfect alternative from staying at some nameless, lifeless hotel" - Bill G (guest)
Make the most of everyday of your Costa Rica vacation!
Why stay in someones spare room or a hotel by the airport when you can stay in a detached studio in a private park setting slurping coffee from one of the finest coffee growing regions in the world!
At the Coffee Garden Meditation Center and Bird Sanctuary enjoy our bush-to-cup coffee while strolling through a working boutique coffee ranch in the early morning sun among artisan coffee plants, listening to birds chirp to the background sounds of a gentle river in our 2 acre meditation garden set in a coffee plantation.
******** Our Coffee ********
One of the benefits of staying with us is enjoying our featured truly atresanal old world coffee. Our coffee fruit is sun dried. They are not sent to a mill to be striped, washed and dried and then sent to a plant for processing as is all commercial coffee fruit and beans. We pay our pickers double to harvest only the reddest coffee fruit at the peak of ripeness. Then our coffee beans remains in the dried fruit until roasting. This triples harvesting costs but as we sell comparatively little roasted coffee (100 kilos a year as we do it as a hobby), you get a rare treat that coffee lovers treasure - coffee harvested and dried in an antique style unavailable to the mass market. That is why our product is truly artesenal.
Along with the purchase of 4 bags or more (great for gifts) you receive an autographed copy of Phil Baker's Costa Rica Now / Travel Live and Own in Paradise. A Costa Rica cult classic (only 200 author copies left - will not be reprinted). 500 pages - a $25 value.

As far as rules go, I have a 14 year old daughter who is the love of my life, public behavior inappropriate to her upbringing is forbidden... We encourage guest to enjoy our grounds, play with our pets, hang out in the view rancho and enjoy the views from the meditation gardens. Just no obnoxious or rude behavior please... Thanks for understanding!
Nous avons apprécié l'accueil chaleureux. L'endroit est agréable. Le jardin est joli. Nous recommandons ce B&B à tous.
Fantastic isn't probably enough of a descriptor for this place. Phil and his team have been awesome hosts. The setting is beyond description, and the room is charming and comfy cozy. When we come back to Costa Rica, we will be back. Did I mention the coffee is out of this world as well? THANKS PHIL.
We were running late bc of getting lost but once we found the place, we were greated with a friendly smile and full explantation of everything. Breakfast was tailored to our making and fresh coffee from the farm was served. We walked the grounds for monring yoga in the meditation garden (self-lead), caught up on emails using wi-fi and took hot showers in the beautiful bathroom (after a few days in a jungle farm in puerto, they were needed!).
So lovely and safe and privacy but also friendliness and service when needed.
Much more unique and warm than a hotel or hostel.
I highly recommend and advise to stay longer too to explore san isidro--we only stayed one day bc we had to get to a wedding in manuel antonio.
Did not get a chance to meet Phil, but Senna has been a great host, welcoming and helpful. As for the property, we enjoyed the tranquillity of the surroundings. The garden is very well mantained and view of the surrounding is great. Needless to say, coffee was great as well as breakfast. Thanks for hosting.
Super Location in a amazing coffee Garden! We missed Phil ( he was out of town) but conversation was easy and quick. Sanne who takes care of us was a super friendly and warm welcoming girl! The room was clean and huge. Would recommend to go there!
Sehr sauberes und ruhiges Zimmer in einem eigenen Haus. Sunny war sehr nett und hilfsbereit. Wir waren nur eine Nacht dort. Aber eignet sich sicher auch für einen längeren Aufenthalt.
Phil's place was amazing. Awesome views, awesome garden and awesome people. Clean & comfortable, we would definitely recommend! :) Oh and the Coffee is delicious!

Hi / Hola! I am a native Californian (San Diego) living in Costa Rica with my daughter. My life vocation is real estate (since 1978). Along with our family home on the lagoon in Cardiff by the sea and several other rental homes, we own 100 acres of vineyard property in Temecula and now a small coffee plantation in Costa Rica. I have been in and out of Costa Rica for many years and have property in Manuel Antonio. Besides authoring Costa Rica Now, the all in one travel guide to Living and Owning in Paradise, I write interpretations of Asian Classics such as the Tao Te Ching. I am also a professional Costa Rica Consultant. Taoist and Buddhist kung fu and meditation are part of my self definition along with being a father which is job One. Having me host you is like having a personal Costa Rican consultant.
**** Contact me before you plan your trip and after you book your stay with us and I will steer you to great places to visit according to you length of stay in Costa Rica and what you would like to do here; surf, zip line, deserted beaches, white sand full service beaches, bird watching, hot springs, witnessing volcanoes and waterfalls and gem destinations off the beaten track,
Finally, I do not host people for the money. I host for the experience of meeting new people. You will find me engaging if you want to talk, or accommodating if you want to have your privacy. I think relationships are the most important and my guests make or break my experience with Airbnb.
***From Airbnb, "Airbnb is built on relationships. Help other people get to know you.Tell them about the things you like: What are 5 things you can’t live without? *** Ok - so here goes - The five things I cannot live without would be:
1 - Freedom
2- Every day doing what I want to do
3 - Friendship
4 - Living in nature
5 - Writing
***I am a kung fu man who practiced and taught ancient Buddhist and Taoist choi li ho fut hung kung fu san soo for over 20 years and still live and learn according to kung fu concepts and Asian philosophy.
***By far my favorite movie is Casablanca as I am a romantic at heart.
***Favorite books? That is a hard choice. Of the ancient classics, I like Stephen Mitchell's translation of the Tao Te Ching and Miyamoto Musahshi's Book of Five Rings. I consider Loving What Is by Byron Katie to be a modern classic. Her practical approach to examining your thoughts creates freedom in your life. Indispensable reading if you actually practice what she calls "The Work."
***Life Motto? Well I am a kung fu man, so it would be the same as my kung fu teacher, "You can take my life, but you can never take my confidence and character." - Grand master of ancient kung fu, Jimmy H. Woo
***My epitaph: Here lies Phil Baker - father, friend, seeker of justice and finally ultimately free. He got things done in a most artful way.
***When I was a small child, I remember sitting on my uncle's lap and he sang to me - "Phil, Phil from San Juan Hill, Never worked and never will!" hahahaha well it affected me intuitively and I quickly learned that life is lived with great satisfaction if you cannot quite tell if you are working or playing. Then, and only then, work ceases to exist and you do what you want to do every day of your life. To me that is "the" definition of success, and to be in sync with the Tao.
