Why stay in someone's spare room or a hotel by the airport when you can stay in a detached studio in a private park setting slurping coffee from one of the most exclusive coffee growing regions in the world!
At the Coffee Garden enjoy our bush-to-cup coffee while strolling through a working boutique coffee ranch among 50-year-old coffee plants. Listen to birds and the sound of a gentle river in our 2-acre meditation garden set in a coffee plantation with panoramic views of Irazu Volcano, the Tres Marias mountains of Braulio Carrillo National Park, and city lights of San Jose.

Our gated, very secure 8-acre estate on the best street in Concepcion de San Isidro de Heredia is located in the nicest small town in the San Jose Valley. Minutes away, restaurant bar Los Portreros features a great selection of quality food and excellent views. It's the real Costa Rica.
Hi, I'm Phil and have been in Costa Rica for over 25 years. I can help you get the most of your entire Costa Rica vacation. You can expect expert advice on your travels, relocation and real estate needs. I have been very successful living and owning in Costa Rica. Along with the purchase of 4 or more bags of coffee, you receive an autographed copy of Phil Baker's Costa Rica Now / Travel Live and Own in Paradise. One of the last 200 copies of this Costa Rica classic. 500 pages - a $25 value.
Location ~ ~ We are located in San Isidro in the beautiful coffee country province of Heredia, about 30 minutes from the National Theater and Gold Museum in central San Jose. Our neighborhood is one of the finest in Costa Rica with a mix of ex-patriots and Costa Ricans living on large estates and smaller homes.
Coffee ~ ~ Our coffee fruit is sun dried for 100 days. Not sent to a mill to be strip washed and dried in mechanical dryers and later sent for processing in an automated warehouse. We pay our pickers double to harvest our coffee fruit at the peak of ripeness. Our coffee beans remain in the dried coffee fruit until ready for small-batch roasting. This triples products costs, but you get a rare treat - coffee harvested and dried in a truly artisanal old-world style.
Massage ~ ~ An hour and a half massage for $40!!!! Trained in Germany our off-site massage professional gives a comprehensive full body massage in the comfort of your room. A perfect way to unwind after a long flight and a great way to end your memorable trip to Costa Rica.
Restaurants ~ ~ The great restaurant Los Portreros with its awesome city light views serves a large variety of fantastic local dishes with generous portions at reasonable prices is a 5-minute taxi ride away. This secret spot is known to locals as "the place to eat." Excellent food and good service. All our guests love it. Ten minutes away is Sibu Chocolates where you can lunch and sample awesome chocolate treats while watching handmade truffles made from Caribbean cocoa. They offer a lunch-included tour.
Transportation ~ ~ The bus is 400 meters away. Taxi to San Isidro is $2 one way. The village of San Isidro has banks, several markets, restaurants and coffee shops bakeries. Downtown Heredia with luxury malls and high-end restaurants is six miles away. Buses leave every 15 minutes to Heredia and San Jose, from where you can board direct buses to all parts of Costa Rica. Taxis arrive at our ranch within minutes. The intentional airport is 30 minutes away.
Attractions ~ ~ La Paz Waterfall Gardens and Rain Forest Adventure zip lines are both easily doable day trips as well as Doka Estates Coffee Tour and Poas Volcano National Park and Braulio Carrillo National Park.
Our clean and modern studio, unique coffee, immaculate gardens, expert advice, a $40 hour-and-a-half massage, and close proximity to downtown San Jose makes The Coffee Garden Boutique Working Coffee Ranch the best bang for your travel buck. See you soon... slurp slurp.
You have access to our 2-acre meditation garden with 500 feet of river frontage, and a 600 square foot party Rancho with panoramic views, darts, foosball table, firepit, heavy duty swing set designed for adults, bar with giant round table and hammock surrounded by an acre of Saint Augustine grass. We have a bocce ball area as well, so come and play!
Interaction with Guests
I enjoy meeting with guests from all over the world; however, if you prefer alone time we are happy to accommodate by giving you all the privacy you need on our large fenced estate.
Our neighborhood is one of the finest in Costa Rica with a mix of ex-patriots and Costa Ricans living on large estates and smaller homes. The Small town of San Isidro is 5 minutes away and has many conveniences. Staying with us gives you a chance to feel what it's like to live in the real Costa Rica. You can walk up the street toward the National Park and if you are lucky you can see white face monkeys. The northeast part of the central valley is the first area to receive the prevailing Caribbean winds purified by miles of Braulio Carrillo National Park cloud forests bordering our neighborhood.
Buses leave every 15 minutes to Heredia and San Jose where you can board direct buses to all parts of Costa Rica. Taxis arrive at our ranch within minutes.
Other Things to Note
We have great pets! Guests love playing with our friendly pooches Chester and Capitan, and our little mascot Roudel! Gizmo the cat is a favorite. La Paz Waterfall Gardens is a must see - we can arrange tours. My daughters favorite zip lines at Rainforest Adventures zip lines are 40 minutes away. Both easily doable day trips. Poas Volcano is a beautiful place to spend the morning and less than an hour away.
This is our home. It is not a hotel. I usually go out of my way to help guests whenever I can, but we are not a full service hotel. We take security seriously, and our dogs patrol the ranch at night, so we prefer not to accommodate guests that return late at night.
As far as rules go, I have a 16-year-old daughter who is the love of my life, public behavior inappropriate to her upbringing is forbidden... We encourage guest to enjoy our grounds, play with our pets, hang out in the view rancho and enjoy the volcano views from the meditation gardens. Just no obnoxious or rude behavior please... Thanks for understanding! Smoking outside is permitted.
The meditation gardens are available during the hours of 7am to 4 pm. After hours by request. For those guests with extended stays, please let us know when you need a change of sheets or towels and we will be happy to oblige.
Note* It's best to bring a source of navigation on your Costa Rica vacation. In all of Costa Rica there are few street signs and no numbered addresses, so navigating is challenging. But people are very helpful.
Early morning View of Volcano Irazu and Turrialba from meditation garden. Volcano Poas and Barva are also nearby.
Hi / Hola! I am a native Californian (San Diego) living in Costa Rica with my daughter. My life vocation is real estate (since 1978). Along with our family home on the lagoon in Cardiff by the Sea, we own 100 acres of vineyard property in Temecula and now a small coffee plantation in Costa Rica. I have been in and out of Costa Rica for many years and have property in Manuel Antonio. Besides authoring Costa Rica Now, the all in one travel guide to Living and Owning in Paradise, I write interpretations of Asian Classics such as the Tao Te Ching. I am also a professional Costa Rica Consultant. Taoist and Buddhist kung fu and meditation are part of my self definition along with being a father which is job One. Having me host you is like having a personal Costa Rican consultant. Pura Vida!
**** Contact me before you plan your trip and after you book your stay with us and I will steer you to great places to visit according to you length of stay in Costa Rica and what you would like to do here; surf, zip line, deserted beaches, white sand full service beaches, bird watching, hot springs, witnessing volcanoes and waterfalls and gem destinations off the beaten track,
Finally, I do not host people for the money. I host for the experience of meeting new people. You will find me engaging if you want to talk, or accommodating if you want to have your privacy. I think relationships are the most important and my guests make or break my experience with Airbnb.
