About This Listing
Cute, comfy room in a 3 bedroom house (caretaker lives in one of the rooms). Ideally located for people visiting the Hamakua Coast (Akaka Falls, Botanic Gardens and even Waipio Valley further afield). Just a 10 min drive from Hilo town.
Cute, comfy room in a 3 bedroom house (the caretaker lives in one of the rooms & the other bedroom is rented out as well). It is ideally located for people visiting the Hamakua Coast (Akaka Falls, the Botanical Garden and even Waipio Valley further afield. The house is also very close to Hilo (7 miles- just 4 miles to edge of downtown) and very easy to find on the main road. It is a nice, comfortable and simple setting for those who want to visit the island, have an easy jump off point to all it has to offer, but do not want to spend a lot of money with lodging.
Room is complete with queen bed, dresser and closet.
Guests have access to a fully equipped kitchen, shared bathroom with towels, laundry room and all other facilities in the house.
We have reliable wi-fi and movies on demand on the TV (though most people are too much into enjoying the island to want to watch TV). We do not have cable (on purpose).
Interaction with Guests
We have a very friendly caretaker who lives on site and is excited about sharing her knowledge about the island and recommending places to go and things to do. We try to bring about a balance of friendly hospitality and privacy to our guests.
Papaikou is just far enough from Hilo to give you a feeling that you are not in the bustle of the city, but only 7 miles away from it. It is a residential neighborhood with farms interspersed here and there. For the plant lovers out there, the house is really close to the Botanical Garden.
We recommend renting a car. Technically, it is possible to get to the house on the Hale On bus, but service is infrequent.
Other Things to Note
The house is very conveniently located on the Hawaii Belt Highway. It makes getting places very easy but the convenience does come with the added noise of traffic and it can be heard in the bedrooms. With that being said, you can also hear the stream flowing below the window, the wind rustling through the banana trees, the neighbor's goats frolicking in their expansive yard to the south of us and yes, the coqui frogs singing their symphony every evening. It seems a small thing to withstand for all of the wonderful qualities, but it may not be for everyone. Questions? Just ask.
Smoking is not allowed inside and, in order to allow everyone to rest for their adventures, we ask that noise be kept to a minimum between 10 PM and 8 AM.
place tres confortable et propre. Tout était à disposition pour cuisiner et faire une lessive. Les propriétaires n'étaient pas là pour nous accueillir mais nous avaient laisser toutes les indications nécessaires.
Good stay - bed is great. Old house but the most important thing is the quality of sleep.
I had a quick but good overnight at Alex's. Nobody was there, but all the info I needed was provided, so no worries. Felt like I was staying at a friend's while they were out of town. Not formal or hotel-clean in the shared areas, but comfy, liveable, and with helpful notes around.
My boyfriend and I really enjoyed our stay here. The house is so lovely and the property is absolutely beautiful!
We had flown in from Oahu for a mini vacation to Big Island and needed a place to stay the night we flew into Hilo. We didn't meet Alex or the other woman who was also staying in the house, so it really felt like we had the place all to ourselves! We enjoyed listening to the coqui frogs and the stream that sits below the house.
There were all these helpful notes around the house just for Air BnB guests which helped us navigate our way around. We woke up early and enjoyed a peaceful morning with delicious coffee before heading to Waipio Valley. There is also toast for guests, but we just settled for coffee.
It really reminded me of my moms house on the north shore of Oahu, so it really felt like a home away from home experience. I really wish we could have stayed longer, but will definitely remember this place for when we come to visit next time!
Thank you guys again! We really loved it :)
We really enjoyed our stay here! The accommodations were exactly as pictured and very clean, comfortable and definitely bright and beautiful. Leaving the windows open all the time made it feel like we were living outside with the comforts of living inside. The peepers (frogs) were pretty loud at night as well as the pouring rain we got, so woke up a few times in the night, but it was a really great experience and very unique. Great amenities and extras (coffee, breakfast and some bathroom products in a basket were a nice touch!)
We would definitely recommend this place and would stay in the future if in Hilo again. Thanks!

About the Host, Alex
I am Brazilian, originally from Recife, and have lived all over the world in the past few years. I used to live in Atlanta, then London, Rio and now in Hong Kong. I am an AirBnB host in Hawaii, where my houses are managed by my good friend Melissa, the hospitality queen. I have stayed in several AirBnB listings in my trips around the world, and traditional hotels are virtually dead for me.
