Budget accommodation in a cute, older 3 bedroom house just outside of Hilo. This is a great accommodation for a family or group of friends who are travelling on a budget. I use the basement for storage and very rare overnight stays.
Budget accommodation in a cute, older 3 bedroom house just outside of Hilo. This listing used to be for just one room, but looking back but that model did not work well because I could not offer the value that my other listings do, it is now re-vamped (as of September 2015). The house does show its age a bit, so we priced it between a Hostel and a regular Hotel.
What you get now is a full house instead of just a room. I did this because it allows us to come and clean the whole place in between stays. While this little old lady of a house will always show its age, we now have more time to give her wrinkles a good scrub after someone leaves. I am gradually renovating it to get rid of the bits and pieces that look worn. She will shine one day, but right now she is just a nice little granny who is welcoming and frugal.
This is a great accommodation for a family or group of friends who are travelling on a budget and do not want to stay in a hostel or pay hotel prices to have private rooms. It is not luxurious, but has all the basics and we are working constantly to make it better. It is ideally located for people visiting the Hamakua Coast (Akaka Falls, the Botanical Garden and even Waipio Valley further afield. The house is also very close to Hilo (7 miles- just 4 miles to edge of downtown) and very easy to find on the main road. It is a nice, comfortable and simple setting for those who want to visit the island, have an easy jump off point to all it has to offer, but do not want to spend a lot of money with lodging and don't need luxury.
Rooms are complete with queen bed, dresser and closet.
Guests have access to a fully equipped kitchen, bathroom with towels, laundry room and all other facilities in the house.
We have reliable wi-fi and movies on demand on the TV (though most people are too much into enjoying the island to want to watch TV). We do not have cable (on purpose).
Interaction with guests
There is a lockbox for check in, and Brandy, manager and caretaker extraordinaire is only a phone call away. I (Alex) sometimes access or stay in the basement overnight (I am making it into a little apartment for myself), but I stay out of the way unless people want to have a chat (or a beer).
Other things to note
The house is very conveniently located on the Hawaii Belt Highway. It makes getting places very easy but the convenience does come with the added noise of traffic (cars going by, not car horns) and it can be heard in the bedrooms. With that being said, you can also hear the stream flowing below the window, the wind rustling through the banana trees, the neighbor's goats frolicking in their expansive yard to the south of us and yes, the coqui frogs singing their symphony every evening. Green geckos hang around and eat mosquitoes, so we have an understanding that they can stay as long as they keep up with that job.
Questions? Just ask.
Smoking is not allowed inside and, in order to allow everyone to rest for their adventures, we ask that noise be kept to a minimum between 10 PM and 8 AM. No parties, please.

I am Brazilian, originally from Recife, and have lived all over the world in the past few years. I used to live in Atlanta, then London, Rio and now in Hong Kong and Hawaii. I am an AirBnB host in Hawaii, where my houses are managed by my good friend Melissa, the hospitality queen. I have stayed in several AirBnB listings in my trips around the world, and traditional hotels are virtually dead for me.
