About this listing
Cute, comfy room in a 3 bedroom house (caretaker lives in one of the rooms). Ideally located for people visiting the Hamakua Coast (Akaka Falls, Botanic Gardens and even Waipio Valley further afield). Just a 10 min drive from Hilo town.
Cute, comfy room in a 3 bedroom house (the caretaker lives in one of the rooms & the other bedroom is rented out as well). It is ideally located for people visiting the Hamakua Coast (Akaka Falls, the Botanical Garden and even Waipio Valley further afield. The house is also very close to Hilo (7 miles- just 4 miles to edge of downtown) and very easy to find on the main road. It is a nice, comfortable and simple setting for those who want to visit the island, have an easy jump off point to all it has to offer, but do not want to spend a lot of money with lodging.
Room is complete with queen bed, dresser and closet.
Guests have access to a fully equipped kitchen, shared bathroom with towels, laundry room and all other facilities in the house.
We have reliable wi-fi and movies on demand on the TV (though most people are too much into enjoying the island to want to watch TV). We do not have cable (on purpose).
Interaction with Guests
We have a very friendly caretaker who lives on site and is excited about sharing her knowledge about the island and recommending places to go and things to do. We try to bring about a balance of friendly hospitality and privacy to our guests.
Papaikou is just far enough from Hilo to give you a feeling that you are not in the bustle of the city, but only 7 miles away from it. It is a residential neighborhood with farms interspersed here and there. For the plant lovers out there, the house is really close to the Botanical Garden.
We recommend renting a car. Technically, it is possible to get to the house on the Hale On bus, but service is infrequent.
Other Things to Note
The house is very conveniently located on the Hawaii Belt Highway. It makes getting places very easy but the convenience does come with the added noise of traffic and it can be heard in the bedrooms. With that being said, you can also hear the stream flowing below the window, the wind rustling through the banana trees, the neighbor's goats frolicking in their expansive yard to the south of us and yes, the coqui frogs singing their symphony every evening. It seems a small thing to withstand for all of the wonderful qualities, but it may not be for everyone. Questions? Just ask.
Smoking is not allowed inside and, in order to allow everyone to rest for their adventures, we ask that noise be kept to a minimum between 10 PM and 8 AM.
I never met Alex, but I was in communication with Brandy. She was available to help us and answer our questions while my boyfriend and I were on Big Island. Thanks Brandy!
Alex's house is cozy. It is OK clean, but could be better. The shower needs an update, as do the windows and the fridge. There were many little ants in the bathroom and kitchen, and small geikos (which were fine considering they eat the mosquitoes!).
It's very lound from frogs and cars during the night because the house is right by the highway. Just bring earplugs and you'll be fine. My boyfriend didn't even need them and he slept fine.
The room was clean and you can lock it which was convenient considering the others renting other rooms.
The accessibility of the house was perfect for us as we were arriving from Volcano and going to visit Waipio Valley.
The fact that this house gets rented by many people without the owner being there could have been a nightmare, but it ended up being a fine experience.
The location near Hilo was good for being in town, heading north among Hamakua coast, and surfing at Honoli'i. Certainly, the entire island is accessible if you don't mind driving a little bit. The room was fine for several days; access the a full kitchen was nice; laundry room, too. Nice to cross paths with other folks living or travelling in the area who were staying in other rooms.
It was a great place to stay. The house was spacious and closed to the nature. At night, you could listen to the chirps of coqui frogs and enjoy the beauty of galaxy in the backyard, and you may see some cute hawaii geckos around the house. It would be perfect, if there was less bugs.
It was nice and simple. The bed was comfortable, bathroom was spacious, and there was enough space for a quick stay. The house was a little hard to find at night time so make sure you first come during the day. There were a lot of bugs around the property, but it is in Hilo. Other than that, its a nice stay for a weekend getaway.
place tres confortable et propre. Tout était à disposition pour cuisiner et faire une lessive. Les propriétaires n'étaient pas là pour nous accueillir mais nous avaient laisser toutes les indications nécessaires.
Good stay - bed is great. Old house but the most important thing is the quality of sleep.

About the Host, Alex
I am Brazilian, originally from Recife, and have lived all over the world in the past few years. I used to live in Atlanta, then London, Rio and now in Hong Kong. I am an AirBnB host in Hawaii, where my houses are managed by my good friend Melissa, the hospitality queen. I have stayed in several AirBnB listings in my trips around the world, and traditional hotels are virtually dead for me.
