Set in the heart of England's beautiful Lake District with spectacular views over Ullswater, High Barton offers sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, a special place to relax, recharge and refocus...
Built in 2001, High Barton is the result of 2 years blood, sweat and a fair few tears along the way. Although it is faced with traditional Lakeland stone, this belies a deceptively modern interior featuring bold colour, Scandinavian design, art from around the world, plenty of books and great views. We have two guest bedrooms each with a double bed and I don't really ever accept more than two guests in one room. While I'd love to have families to stay the space is simply not practical.
Aside from two beautifully appointed double rooms replete with shower rooms, WiFi and books, I invite you to share the piano room, billiard room and, of course, views across Ullswater.
Interaction with Guests
This is my home first and foremost. You are most welcome but I do not run a traditional b and b. So don't expect tea-making facilities in your room, but do join me in the kitchen for a cuppa and homemade cake. Please bring your slippers and leave outside shoes for outside. I'm always delighted to chat and share fellow travelling stories, but since you're paying me for a service, please don't be surprised if I slip away to sort out the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, make the beds etc etc...
The views and my nearest neighbours - the cows.
YOU NEED A CAR!!! This is the Lake District - the best public transport is by foot or pedal power. Otherwise bring a car - we're half a mile from the nearest pub and three miles from the nearest village. A local bus does pass the driveway a couple of times a day but don't rely on it.
Other Things to Note
CA11 0JH - sat nav will only get you to the area not the house
Leave M6 junction 40
First left on roundabout (Keswick /Ullswater)
Next roundabout - 2nd left Ullswater (a592)
Stay on this road all the wAy to the lake
At the lake turn right (glen ridding / Windermere)
Follow this road for about 2.5 miles lake on your left at all times
You will see a village sign for watermillock - keep going up hill, past the bracken rig pub (on your right) down long hill, past a phone box on your right, there will be house close to the road now.
As the road swings round to the right you will see waterside house on your left (says private no access) look to your right and a little further on you'll see a milk churn on the right hand side of the road. Slow down and look up the fell behind it - one big house obe smaller one behind with blue shutters - that's it. The road will straighten out signal right and slow down the driveway is hidden. Look for two stone gate posts with 'Ravenoaks' engraved on it / small slate plaque that says 'Lake House'. That is the driveway. Go all the way to the top - stay left at the fork and you'll end up in a gravel driveway with a rust coloured skoda parked - you've arrived!
If you miss the driveway and get to Leeming House Hotel you've gone too far- turn around! Good luck!
Unfortunately we do not allow pets and smoking is strictly an outdoors affair. As previously mentioned, bring your slippers as shoes are for outside.
From the moment our stay was accepted, Pauline was incredible. She ensured that our arrival was smooth, was flexible during our stay and provided truly incredible service through out. I cannot give too much praise regarding how helpful she was!
Her home is also truly amazing - so well put together and situated with idyllic views through every window.
Make the most of any chance to stay here - you will not be diasappointed.
Thank you so much David!......I'll never look at a cream shirt, grey flannel jacket and smokey blue velvet?cords...without remembering the trouble you went to ...to look the part for the SharrowBay wedding.....(with 5hrs, notice).as I said, Hannah,I bet he was the best dressed guy there!
To say we have enjoyed our stay is really to say nothing! As Pauline said during one of our chats people make places and she certainly makes Cumbria for us! We loved the house, we loved the Lakes but most we loved her company as she really was the most brilliant host we have ever met during our travels. Thank you so much Pauline and look forward to you welcoming us to your house again in summer!
Pauline made us feel most welcome in her lovely home. The bedroom is upstairs with its own bathroom, so it feels very private when desired. When looking for some company, then Pauline was always ready with delicious breakfasts or hot tea. A resident of the Lake District for some time now, Pauline was full of recommendations and history about the area.
A bit more about the setting...this is a wonderful part of the world and Pauline's home provides grand views of the lake and surrounding hills. It is easy to reach from Penrith and connects well to other parts of the Lake District.
We would certainly recommend Pauline and her home for travelers looking to take in the serene setting of the area while also being spoiled by a gracious host!
We were welcomed very warmly to the property, dispute us turning up late. Throughout our stay we were looked after, served wonderful breakfasts and given advice about activities to do.
we had had a car as it was hard to get around from the property. As it was, Pauline was very kind and drove us very kindly to the bus stop and Steamer port.
Pauline was a wonderful host, very friendly and warm and helpful.
The property is stunning, a real wonderland in a beautiful location with stunning views. The room was very cute and romantic.
Thank you for a wonderful stay Pauline.
My boyfriend and I had an lovely stay at Pauline's. Our room was beautiful, clean and comfortable with lots of space. The views of the countryside and the lake were lovely to wake up to. Our breakfasts were delicious and kept us full almost all day! Pauline was welcoming, interesting but also gave us time and space to relax. All in all we had a great stay - would definitely recommend.
It was wonderful and really a great pleasure for us to stay at your home. Seldom had seen such a lovely and well decorated and designed house. You were so warm and heartly.... And breakfast was also very delicious... We certainly will come back.
The house is beautiful and the interior stunning. It is tastefully decorated with photos, prints and paintings. Our room was spacious, luminous, with views of the lake and sparkling clean. The mattress was rather hard. Pauline is welcoming, generous and helpful. The breakfasts were tailored to our request, abundant, varied from day to day and of the highest quality. Our days in Watermillock were wonderful and the icing on the cake was the beautiful weather during our staying, an unexpected bonus in the Lake District. Certainly a place to recommend.
