Location

Kiltegan, County Wicklow, Ireland

County Wicklow is known as 'The Garden of Ireland ' due to its fabulous lush greenery, natural and native woodland, excellent hiking, biking and a myriad of other outdoor pursuits. It's eastern shore borders the Irish Sea south of the country's capital city Dublin, while the West and South of the county are more mountainous and less heavily populated.
Kiltegan is a charming wide streeted victorian village which origanally evolved to service the estate of the nearby Humewood Castle, a fine example of Gothic revival architecture set on over 400 acres of magnificent grounds. The village (a previous winner of the Irish Tidy Towns cometition) is a short stroll from the cottage and has two interesting pubs, one of which serves a gastro pub style menu as well as a community coffee shop/ cafe and convenience store. It also boasts a fine Church of Ireland church whilst there is a Roman Catholc church a short distance from the village. The area is popular with those seeking to experience the widespread opportunities to enjoy nature in peaceful surroundings, hiking and hill walking, bicycling, horseback riding etc.
Popular with golfers, there are some fine golf parkland courses in the area, the closest being Baltinglass (9 kms), Coolattin, Rathsallagh, Mount Wolesley, Killerig, Tulfarris, Kilkea, Woodenbridge, Brooklodge, Bunclody.
The closest supermarket, butcher, pharmacy etc are in the town of Baltinglass, about 9 km from the cottage. Baltinglass is a fine market town boasting a historically significant ancient Cistercian monastery dating from circa 700AD as well as a number of megalithic tombs and ring forts in close proximity. The area also boasts a number of holy wells, ancient roadways, historic monuments and Dolmens, all of which can be easily accessed. Also within easy reach is the magnificent valley of two lakes Glendalough regarded as one of Irelands most beautiful visitor destinations and the epitome of rugged romantic Ireland. A deeply tranquil and spiritual place which has featured in many film productions over recent years.
There are many restaurants in the vicinity of the cottage, from casual to fine dining. Katie Lowes in Kiltegan , Germaines, The Perch and Horans in Baltinglass, Mount Wolesley in Tullow, Tapas bar in Grangecon, The Step House in Borris, Brooklodge in Aughrim etc and a wide selection in and around Carlow town about half an hour's drive away.
Nearby visitor attractions of note include the Wicklow Way, Lisnavagh Gardens, Burton House, Russborough House, Powerscourt House and Gardens, Ducketts Grove, Borris House, George Bernard Shaw theatre Carlow, Clara Lara fun park, Avondale House and gardens, Avoca retail experience, Rathwood restaurant and shopping village. The cottage is ideally situated to allow guests to explore all these attractions from a serene and peaceful base.
