After 10 minutes I got to Chris's house, I forgot that I was his host and started seeing him as the college roommate that left the rat race to settle for a simple and more rewarding life in the worldly paradise that is Hawaii.
The illusion persisted until it was time for me to leave. Only then I remembered that I'd actually known Chris just for a handful of days and that now I had to get him to visit me in his next travels.
The location is perfect, the apartment very clean and the host fantastic.
This was my first AirBnB experience and it was awesome. Chris is a polite and easygoing guy. As a host he does everything he can to make sure you have a good experience. He even drove me to the beach and to Diamond Head. The room offers privacy and was very clean when I arrived; there were even brochures to help you figure out what to do during your stay in Hawaii. The lanai (balcony) is relaxing and beautiful. The apartment is very close to several convenience stores and the #2 Waikiki bus. I think I enjoyed my trip more at Chris' place than I would have if I had stayed at a hotel. I would definitely come again in a heartbeat!
Stay with Chris on your next visit to Oahu! You get the convenience and location of a hotel, the price of a hostel, and the warmth and good cheer of a bed and breakfast. It's the best of all worlds. I stayed for 5 nights and wish I could have stayed longer.
This was my first AirBNB experience and it was awesome! Initially I was nervous as a single woman traveling alone. But I saw that Chris has such great reviews and I felt comfortable with our exchanges. Once I met him, I felt perfectly safe, welcomed, and at home. He cooked me my first meal and made me a smoothie...you don't get that kind of welcome at hotel! You could spend a couple hundred a night to stay at a cookie-cutter soulless hotel in Waikiki...or you can stay with Chris, breakfast on the lanai beneath his surfboards, walk to everything you need, and have someone to tell you where the best pho is! It felt homey - and so much more authentic to hang out with a local than be with all the tourists.
Chris's lanai faces the Doubletree Alana Waikiki. (It's funny to be right next door and pay a fraction of the price). The proximity to the Doubletree is really helpful as a pickup/dropoff landmark. I had the airport shuttle drop me off at the Doubletree and then I just walked around the corner to Chris's. And whenever I needed a taxi, I just walked to the Doubletree.
My main goal for this trip was to scuba dive as much as possible. Dive Oahu does pickups up and dropoffs at the Doubletree, so once again, it was so easy to just wake up, breakfast on the lanai, then walk around the corner to be picked up for diving and then be brought back afterwards.
The lane leading to Chris's place is a little run-down, but don't let that fool you. It's perfectly safe. I got a kick out of walking past the Hideaway (email hidden) on the lane, and eating pho at the restaurant there.
Chris is marvelous to talk to - easygoing, funny, sweet. We went out for drinks one night with his friends and it was nice to have someone to come home to each night and share experiences of my day.
Chris describes his bed as a futon, which I thought would be like the hard futons I slept on in college. Nope! It was quite comfortable and springy. I slept like a baby every night I was there, always with the windows open so I could feel the delicious tradewinds. Someone posted a review that said the unit was noisy. I brought ear plugs because of that, but didn't really need them. I only heard the truck on one morning, and you have to expect some city noise when you are in a major city.
I'm so grateful for this experience and hope to stay again!
Chris was an exceptional host, even going so far as to help me recover my wallet after I dropped it on a bus. I felt very welcome and comfortable during my stay and would unequivocally recommend Chris as a host.
The living space was clean and well-furnished, with plenty of space to move around and relax. The location of the apartment is very convenient, with easy access to a 24-hour 7-Eleven, a couple ABC stores, various bus stops, and the Waikiki beachfront. The only (minor) drawback is its proximity to a couple commercial loading docks, which generates a fair bit of noise in the morning (I found it useful as an extra morning alarm, but travelers used to sleeping in may not appreciate it as much!).
Overall, I had a great stay and would wholeheartedly recommend Chris and his apartment to anyone looking for a place to stay in the Waikiki area.
Chris is an awesome host and great person in general. I recommend his place to stay unreservedly. It is well located and comfortable.
Chris was a fantastic host. I would like to stay again.
Great rooftop apartment within walking distance of Waikiki beach. Chris is a very kind easy going host who even came to pick me up from the busstop. Thanks for the awesome stay.
Chris was a great, friendly, and thoughtful host! Only stayed for one night unfortunately, but was made to feel very comfortable and welcome! Clean and good location. Thanks again!
