This is a lovely apartment in one of the most desirable and convenient neighborhoods in San Francisco. You are within a block or two of first-class restaurants, cozy cafes, chic shops, and lively bars (if that's what you're into) — but the apartment itself is tucked away on a quiet street lined with stately Chinese elm trees, flowers, and Victorian houses. The apartment is located on the border of the Castro and Duboce Triangle neighborhoods — one block from Market Street, San Francisco's main street — a convenient location for exploring the city.
The apartment is in a classic 1908 Edwardian building that was completely renovated in 2009 with all new systems (while preserving the original architectural details). The apartment is tastefully furnished in a contemporary style. It faces the rear of the building and is extremely quiet. In addition to a large bedroom, spacious kitchen, and a living room, it has a shaded private deck with a cafe table and chairs. Beyond that is a lush garden and patio — a common area that is rarely used by other residents of the building, so it feels quite private.
The chef's kitchen is fully equipped with a new Viking range, fridge, and dishwasher, and microwave. You are welcome to use the dishes, utensils, pots and pans, as well as the condiments, spices, cooking oils, etc.
The apartment also has an in-unit washer/dryer, 42" LCD flat-screen TV (with free movies via Netflix), Apple TV, wireless Internet, and a telephone line with unlimited free phone calls within US (please do not make foreign calls with this phone).
The bedroom faces the deck and is furnished with a comfortable platform bed and Danish mid-century desk. The bathroom has a shower and tub with instant-on hot water and good pressure. Plenty of fresh linens and towels are provided.
The location is well served by public transportation. You are one block from Market Street (where vintage F-line trolleys can take you downtown in 20 minutes), two blocks from MUNI trains (downtown in 10 minutes), and a 10-minute walk to BART (which runs to both San Francisco and Oakland airports). You are also three blocks from lovely Duboce Park and two blocks from the fabulous art deco Castro Theater.
Everone who has stayed here has really enjoyed it — I'm sure you will, too!
Please note: A dog lives on the premises. Although the apartment is extremely clean and the dog will not be there when you are, if you are allergic to dogs this is probably not a good choice.

Duboce Triangle is a wonderful neighborhood next door to the Castro Distrrict. My neighbors are very friendly and there are lots of trees, flowers, and dogs. Lots of excellent restaurants, cozy cafes, chic shops, and lively bars. Also, lovely Duboce Park and the fabulous art deco Castro Theater are only a 5-minute walk. There is an excellent farmers market outside my building every Wednesday afternoon.
One block from Market Street (where vintage F-line trolleys can take you downtown in 20 minutes), two blocks from MUNI trains (downtown in 10 minutes), and a 10-minute walk from BART (which runs to both San Francisco and Oakland airports).

Peter maintained easy communication before and during our trip. A previous occupant had an emergency and was unable to pick up her clothes before our arrival. Peter kept us in the loop in order to be aware of the situation. Peter gave the impression that if we had any questions or concerns, that he would be easy to contact and willing to accommodate.
The apartment itself is a comfortable size for 2 occupants. It has a lived in feeling (it does not feel like a vacation rental) but rather staying in a good friend's home. Although we did not utilize the back porch during our trip it looked like a lovely spot to relax with a cup of coffee or glass of wine. The apartment's greatest feature is its perfect location. It is a very short walk to dozens of restaurants, cafes, shopping, and most importantly, transportation. The place is perfect if you are traveling without a car. If you have a car, like we did, you will have to find a garage, or streets without parking permits to leave your car. (We had a friend provide us with visitor parking passes for the area).
Also if you are traveling with a lot of clothes/shoes, there is very little closet/drawer space to store clothes if you are staying for an extended amount of time. We were comfortable keeping some of our belongings in our bags during our stay.
I have two key complaints. One is around communication: Peter, our host, did not inform us ahead of time that he would be out of town and without regular email/internet access. Neither did he leave someone local in charge in case things went wrong. Two minor things went wrong that were not at all Peter’s fault, and they would not have been issues worth mentioning if he or his person-in-charge had been around to respond to us quickly. But because he wasn’t, these became big hassles. Also, the primary number on the listing (the number that was sent to me) was his landline, for the house in which we were staying. It was incredibly frustrating, when I called him with the first minor issue, to hear the phone in the kitchen go off. Peter said that both numbers are on the listing, but only the landline was visible to me. I also emailed him, just in case, but he didn’t get that in time either. Again: if someone local had been available, the matters would have been sorted so, so easily.
The second issue is cleanliness. Peter is a dog-owner, which is fine. Of course there will be some dog hairs here and there, and we wouldn’t object to that. But we would and did have an issue with the blanket on the bed, which was entirely covered with white dog hair that immediately got all over our clothes, and with the amount of dust under the sofa (which we encountered when we went to retrieve a pen that had rolled under it).
These two issues really colored the whole experience for us, which is a shame because otherwise it’s quite a nice apartment, and Peter was (when available) easy to talk to, and very civil. The apartment is perfect for 2, and not (we felt) terribly comfortable for 3, but manageable. There is a gorgeous outdoor seating area behind the apartment, and the interior is quite charming. Peter’s taste in literature and art gave the apartment soul. And the location is marvelous.
The 2-star rating might seem harsh because I haven’t gone into the nitty-gritty of the communication issues (which not only stressed me out during our stay but also for about a week thereafter until everything got resolved). I’m sure that most of the time, guests have a perfectly good stay at this apartment. I’m afraid I can’t excuse a host for being unavailable for emergencies and not even having a local person on hand for backup. I’ve been a host myself, and always made sure that someone local was on hand in case of any emergency or unforeseen issue.
Neha, I'm sorry you encountered some issues while staying at my apartment. I pride myself on leaving my apartment in spotless condition for my guests to enjoy. However, in the future I will make sure to have the blankets dry cleaned before guests arrive. As for communication, the fact is I did mention that I would be out of town while you were staying in my apartment (which is why I mailed you the keys!). My cell phone number is listed on the site, but apparently you only saw the landline number, so I will talk to airbnb about correcting that situation. In the future, I will make sure to have a friend available in the event any problems arise while I'm away.
Peter's apartment was well kept, updated, modern, and comfortable. He was very accommodating in letting us drop off our luggage as soon as we arrived from the airport, despite it being well before our check-in time...and the neighborhood offered plenty of places to walk and explore for a few hours til check-in. His kitchen was remarkably well equipped, and it was great to have convenient access to the washer and dryer in the apartment. The location is great for access to public transportation, with plenty to do on market street, and is walking distance to the Castro. The back deck was a special treat for a quiet spot to sit and chat. All and all a great experience; we would definitely return or recommend to anyone.
I had a great five days at Peter's flat. It's in a perfect area to walk with plenty of great dining or drinking options within a few blocks, or if you want to go anywhere else it's a block from the Market St tram lines. It's quiet, comfortable, and Peter leaves detailed instructions on how to deal with everything. The area is relatively flat also, which is a nice feature in a SF visit location. It's a little dark due to the back location and mature trees, but that means a nice back deck and open space. A great spot for 1 or 2 people.
We loved the neighborhood and it was very close to transport. The apartment was well furnished and felt really homely(particularly the kitchen). It was a little dark for our tastes, but perfect for someone who loves a more cosy space. Would be great for people with pets, but not people with allergies (like my partner). The patio out the back is great, a lovely leafy spot to sit and read.
My parents stayed at Peter's apartment during their visit to San Francisco. He has a beautiful flat with state of the art kitchen and TV! They really enjoyed having a kitchen and eating area and being centrally located. Peter was a great host! They are looking forward to returning! Thanks, Peter!
