  • What an incredible place to spend a couple of days on retreat! Caroline and Roland's garden cottage provided a delightfully peaceful and extraordinarily scenic setting--not to mention the wonderful comforts of the interior of the cottage itself. I look forward to the opportunity to return some day!

  • Caroline and Roland's Garden Cottage is perfect! Our bed was so comfy! The kitchen had everything we needed to cook a wonderful meal which we ate on the lovely porch overlooking Caroline's amazing gardens. I have only seen gardens that lovely in Southern Living magazine. The weather was perfect so we spent quite a bit of time outside enjoying their lovely property.
Caroline and Roland were perfect hosts! They even invited us to join them and their friends for dinner the first night, but we had plans with our daughter and son-in-law. Our only regret is that we didn't get to stay longer! Maybe we can have a raincheck on the dinner invitation.

  • My husband and I celebrated our anniversary at the Cottage and we are smitten with this beautiful location! Caroline and Roland were very hospitable and have created such a comfortable atmosphere. The cottage itself is equipped with just about everything you need, including a stellar DVD collection. The back porch and hammock were quite inviting and I hope that next time we stay there I will have more time to lounge on both while only hearing the sounds of nature and watching the fireflies. If you are need of a peaceful getaway not too far from the "city", this is the spot!

  • The Garden Cottage is even better in-person than in pictures ! Everything was perfect, clean, and prepared for arrival. Roland and Caroline are wonderful hosts, providing great communication, and just the right amount of attention. Their canines, Oscar and Chloe greeted me every afternoon upon arrival from the jobsite. Caroline's gardens make the (email hidden) to walk around and enjoy the outdoors, and Roland's craftsmanship in the cottage is an inspiration. It was an all-around excellent experience, and I would recommend the Garden Cottage for anyone needing to enjoy a quiet retreat off the beaten path. It's not close to anywhere, but definitely worth the drive - I used the 30 min. drive out of Burlington, to start my unwinding, before arriving to the cottage for the final defrag session each day.

  • We stayed here Memorial Day weekend while attending a wedding not far away from this spot. What a little slice of Heaven! First, the photos Caroline has posted simply do not do this spot justice. It is breath-takingly beautiful. The cottage is connected to the main house by a little roofed breezeway and is very comfortable and clean. Inside, it is a very simple but lovingly decorated one-bedroom cottage with a full kitchen and a washer/dryer.
The true draw are the gardens that Caroline and Roland design and care for. There are Adirondack chairs scattered around (and a hammock!) the property to relax and enjoy the scenery.
I correct myself: The real true draw are Caroline and Roland, a happy, gentle couple who make hospitality look effortless.
This would (email hidden) for a weekend retreat or even a longer stay for writers.
A few side notes: This is a rural location and we did get turned around a bit back on those roads, especially with an unexpected detour due to a bridge out. If you're going to driving around, expect to drain some batteries for GPS.
Also, the wifi is very hit or miss if that's important to you. It's not the sort of place you'll want to be stuck inside on your computer all day, though.

  • I cannot adequately express in 500 words just how wonderful my stay was with Caroline and her husband. The cottage has everything you could possibly need in the way of modern conveniences, yet is has the feeling of a private escape. Tucked back from the road just enough so you only hear the peaceful sounds of nature around you, it is surrounded by gorgeous gardens and woods you can walk amongst. We loved sitting on the back porch at night and watching the fireflies, and in the morning sitting with a cup of coffee and breakfast, and watching all the wildlife. It was easy to hop in the car, and drive to many fun places within 20-30 minutes. I have to admit though, we found it hard to pull ourselves away from the cottage at times. Caroline and her husband were so hospitable, and anything we needed was available to us. I am so glad I found their garden cottage, and I would recommend it to anyone looking to travel to North Carolina! I know they'll be seeing me again!

  • An exceptionally beautiful place and warm, wondeful hosts made this one we'll return to. The cottage is charming, clean and comfortable. The private back deck (email hidden) to hang out. Very quiet. The flower gardens are absolutely exquisite! We so enjoyed wandering the grounds and discovering layers and layers of amazing beauty. We enjoyed chatting with Caroline and Roland; they were available to the extent we needed and fun to converse with. The photos don't reveal the incredible beauty and relaxing, peaceful vibe of this place. Nearby Pittsoboro was a fun, funky small town to explore and dine in.

  • Truly a lovely and charming stay with all the personal touches one rarely finds at a hotel. The cottage and its surroundings relaxed and entertained me from a variety of electronics to soaking up all the natural beautiful where I was inspired to take pictures, (email hidden) name Bo on the land, meditate and reflect, and walk around the meadow - which I will revisit next time at night to star gaze. I picked up groceries beforehand in another town and the kitchen was a delight to cook (email hidden) to turn off your internet and cell phone.

  • I found this spot while searching for a place to go on brief retreat to write my vows a few days prior to my wedding. Other nearby spots had fallen through, but after saying here I am so glad they did. I could not possibly have found a more suitable place for me to reflect in solitude. Caroline is a garden designer, so the grounds of their property draw you into their design for a contemplative stroll without compromising their innate piedmont wildness.

The cottage itself is utterly right-sized: a sofa, chair, and TV with a large DVD collection to the right as you walk in, a kitchen table and every amenity you could need (email hidden), coffee grinder, and kettle to the left. Down the hall is a comfortable bathroom stocked with every bathroom supply you'd have at your own home, and a huge, squishy bed to nestle into at night. Out back is a private deck in full view of one of their more expansive gardens backed by a creek running through the woods. All of this is situated in such a remote and pristine part of the county that you'd be lucky to hear more than handful of cars go by.

Whether you're looking for a super-private retreat (email hidden) to share the company of cultivated people, Caroline's spot is the place for you. I've already told half a dozen people about it and remain convinced that if more people knew of it the place would be booked every day.
