The Space

You will find this unique vacation home at the end of a private unpaved wooded country lane. This relaxing river house is centrally located only 30 minutes from Jacksonville, St. Augustine and the beaches. It is nestled on a 1-1/2 acre private setting along the St. Johns River.
The home is surrounded by large oaks and palm trees that give it a tropical feel. Peaceful & relaxing, all the elements for the best vacation you could imagine are here. A 300 ft dock (100m) with an upper level offers sweeping view's of the St. Johns River. Watch manatee's, eagles, herons and spectacular sunsets from this unique vantage point. A pair of bald eagles frequent this area. They are a spectacular sight to see. Pods of manatee are usually around the dock from spring to early fall. There is a 12' canoe for your use, you can paddle along the river bank to view nature up close in the canoe. Alpine Park is a 54 acre riverfront park 1 mile north of us. It has historic buildings, walking and jogging trails, children's playground and a dock.
This home has an open floor plan with the large kitchen, living room/ dining room with lots of natural light and wonderful garden, pool and river views. You can watch the kids in the pool or yard while you are in the kitchen. There is almost always something in bloom. Orange, lime, lemon and plum trees offer fresh fruit different times of the year. The private pool (NOT HEATED) with seating and jets is perfect in the summer for sipping your evening cocktail while the steaks are on the grill. The pool has a waterfall that is soothing to hear while you are outside. The pool cabana is convenient for outdoor relaxation with it's own mini fridge, stereo, outdoor bathrooms, ceiling fans, comfortable seating and charcoal grill.
Inside the home features 4 bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms upstairs,* two of the bedrooms are kids 'bunk rooms' and are small. **Please note that all the bedrooms are UPSTAIRS. * The private den downstairs can be converted to a bedroom with advance notice, and a small charge. The bathrooms are very small but they have everything you need, two are upstairs, 1 is downstairs with a Jacuzzi tub. A separate den with a fireplace, a living room, large kitchen, dining room/family room, laundry room, screen porch and bathroom are downstairs. Outdoors we have a large yard, a children's playground and a river overlook complete with chairs.
This home is relaxed and casual, NOT glitz and glam. We are very casual, flip flops are standard. You will feel yourself relax the minute you walk in the door. It's great to watch the spectacular sunsets in the evenings. This is a very nice and safe area and also close to grocery stores, shopping and restaurants. We live in the garage apartment next door to the River House. It is completely private from the main house. We are on site most days, but not necessarily all day. We may also stay in our little beach cottage when it is not rented. We are very conscious of the privacy of our guests. We want you to feel as if this is your home away from home, enjoy and have fun. If you are looking for a low key, relaxing place within easy distance to everything else, this is your place.

Guest Access

Guest have access to the entire house, yard, cabana and dock. Guests do not have access to the garage, apartment area or office area. The garage apartment has a separate entrance and is separate from the main house.

Interaction with Guests

We respect your privacy while you are here, but we are happy to answer any questions or help in any way. We are friendly but will stay to ourselves other than clean the pool and decks off when needed.

The Neighborhood

It is close to everything, grocery stores, restaurants, parks, 30 min. to St. Augustine or Jacksonville. This area is very nice and a safe area. The kids can run and play in the yard without worry of traffic or strangers.

Getting around

You will need a car to get around.

Other Things to Note

Please note that our drive way is not paved and in heavy rainy weather can have water puddles and become muddy. This usually dissipates in a day or two.

  • This was an amazing place to stay!! My family and I had the privilege of visiting for one week... Wish we could have stayed longer!! The house was perfect. Clean and relaxed, equipped with everything we could have needed. The owners, Bob and Lori, were super friendly and easy going, while always respecting our privacy. A couple times we saw them out taking care of the grounds, so we went out to meet them and chat for a while. Otherwise, we would have never known they were there. While the house is really great, I think what makes this place so special is the grounds. There is a huge, extremely beautiful oak tree out front, and lots a big trees with beautiful Spanish moss hanging everywhere out back on the way out to the pier. Fruit trees to enjoy, a wonderful dock to fish off of, or just enjoy the view. Sunsets are incredible. The pool is great too. I took several dips a day with my 10 month old, and then while he was napping I would get to lay out on the pool deck. No complaints at all, everything was perfect. Really hope to visit again!

  • Very comfortable home for 7 of us, even had a dining table to seat us at one time (well, 6 seater, but squeezed in 7). We have found that to be very unusual in rental homes, usually a very small table even in large houses. The kitchen was very well stocked, we cooked, and barbequed, most of our meals there.
The house is on a large property, set back a ways from the river but you can see it from the house or patio, lots of large windows in the house, very bright and open feeling. Also a very long dock out in the river with some seating upstairs or you can take chairs out there. Also another deck with chairs at the rivers edge, overlooking the river. The pool is not heated but a couple of us braved it one day and it is very refreshing! Probably really nice on a hot summers day.
The house is also set back a ways from the main road, nice and quiet and private, but the driveway is dirt and very bumpy.
We never saw the owners while we were there but found them to be very easy to communicate with by email and text messages.
Unfortunately, while we were there the neighbors decided to cut down and burn several trees, which seemed to go on for several days. Not something our hosts had any control over of course, but still annoying.
Overall, we had a nice vacation there and would certainly consider returning.

  • Bob and Lori have such a beautiful home on one of the loveliest properties we have ever had the privilege of visiting! It really is a sanctuary. The children loved exploring the property, playing tether ball, walking the dock, picking oranges and giant lemons and swimming in the pool. I personally enjoyed sitting under the 500+ year old live oak tree in front of the house and reading. It in itself is majestic! The sunsets were stunning too. Be sure to bring your camera! We sure hope to visit again soon!

  • Four teenagers could not find time to be bored! Hunting for lizards...the pool...the cabana...the dock.... and your unbelievably beautiful property kept this winter weary family happy beyond any expectation!

Your house is so beautiful, we truly could not see how you could bare to share! The rooms are better than any hotel and there was nothing wanting in the kitchen.

There was no need to be anywhere else although we ventured for a short visit to St. Augustine to see the beach and had to go back for the ice cream at Cone Heads before we left.

You have spoiled us! We have been truly blessed.

    Thank you! The Batulis Family

  • We'd stayed a few times in the Jacksonville area before, in an ocean condo on Fernandina Beach. We thought it might be nice change to to rent a house on a wooded property, preferably with lots of live oaks with Spanish moss, on the St. John's River. A quick search on airbnb turned up Bob and Lori's "Nature Lover's Sanctuary" - exactly what we were looking for! It is just as lovely as the pictures - or more! Bob's and Lori's place has lots of great spaces for gathering - indoors and out; the decor is very tasteful - a low key Florida theme - and feels like home the second you walk in. We like to cook, and we especially appreciated the kitchen. (There's a very nice indoor farm stand just a couple minutes away and an amazing seafood market about 10 minutes away - we definitely took advantage of both!) There's also a very nice city park with hiking trails very close by. Bob is a nice, easygoing guy who was very responsive to our questions.

I definitely recommend Bob and Lori's, and would be delighted to return!

  • What a wonderful, relaxing stay we had at Bob & Lori's home! It was everything they said & more. My husband & I walked out on the dock the first morning & met a pair of manatees. The grounds were well kept & the pool was beautiful & inviting. Our daughter was in heaven!
Thanks to Bob & Lori's thoughtfulness as hosts, we had everything we needed & couldn't have asked for a more inviting & secluded getaway. We made a day trip to St. Augustine, grilled poolside & splurged on blue crab. What more could one want in a Florida vacation?
We would definitely recommend Nature Lover's Paradise as a vacation stay & look forward to visiting again.

  • Nature lover’s house was beyond anything I could have wished for! After much debate of what to do for my Mother’s 60th birthday, I came up with the idea to rent a house for the whole family to stay in and surprise my Mom. The house served as a great home based for everyone with family coming in and out all weekend. The pictures on Airbnb definitely do the house justice but nothing beats seeing it in person with all of its glory. The rooms are spacious and tactfully decorated along with the rest of the house. It’(email hidden) for all ages, everyone was impressed with the amenities and desktop views. I was lucky enough to see manatees swimming about right off the beautiful 300ft dock. My friend and I took out the canoe out for a spin, providing a lot of fun to be able to explore the St. Johns River. Bob and Lori were amazing hosts making sure we had breakfast upon arrival and they were beyond helpful during our stay. Thank you so much for renting out your beautiful home you built, it was worth the blood, sweat, and tears. I will definitely keep this property in mind for future gatherings.

  • Where to begin with?!
We rented the house in April for one month and stayed there with our daughter, who is 7 months old.

Our stay in the river house was utterly fabulous! The house is exactly as described, but you can't believe how peaceful the atmosphere is. Especially on the dock and in the huge garden.

The house itself is spacious, every room is decorated nicely and the beds are very comfy. The kitchen is very well equipped, there is hardly anything you could miss. We cooked almost every evening at home because we enjoyed the huge kitchen so much.
But don't forget the grill outside - we had lovely BBQs by the pool. Oh... the pool. Sheer bliss on a sunny and hot day!

The premises are well kept and we really couldn't find anything to complain about, even if we wanted. What we, of course, didn't want to :-)

The owners, Bob and Lori are the hosts you would wish for!
Attentive, helpful, friendly and so kind...
We got excellent recommendations regarding sight-seeing, trips and restaurants. It was a good thing to rely on their suggestions. We'd encourage everyone to pick their brains when renting out the house.
The communication before the stay was superb, we got a very detailed description how to find our way (which was quite necessary, because it is (email hidden)) and although we arrived almost in the middle of the night, Bob drove up the driveway to help us find the entrance.

If you think about renting, don't think twice! But be aware of the fact that you always have to drive longer distances to get to either St. Augustine (Beach) or Jacksonville Beach/ Downtown.

We were more than happy to have found such a tranquil spot where we could just relax and enjoy nature. We even saw manatees directly at the dock one day - a priceless experience...

You may rest assured, we will be back! Hopefully there won't be too many bookings after our appraisal :-)

  • We spent 2 weeks at the River House for March break 2013 with two kids (12 and 15).
The house is spacious, light, well equipped, comfortable and very clean. The neighborhood is very nice and anything needed may be find in the near area.
Bob and Laurie are very nice persons, discrete, helpful and it's a pleasure to have met them.
I would definitely recommend this vacation rental to anyone.

    Response from Bob And Lori:

Dimitri and his family were very quiet and neat. I hardly knew they were there. I just wish that they'd seen a manatee. The weather was cold and the manatees stayed somewhere else where it's warmer than here. You guys are welcome back anytime.
