Interaction with Guests
I will be out of town or at my cabin (the Trade River Retreat Center) when the house is available. Caretaker Simone lives in the separate downstairs apartment, with it's own entrance, and is available if there are any questions or concerns.
It's like being in a small town in the heart of the city. 2 blocks to great little grocery store, gift shops, independent bookstore, wine shop, post office and several great restaurants. Small nature preserve across the street behind the seminary. Just blocks from St Paul U of MN campus. Voted best neighborhood for architecture in the Twin Cities.
10 minutes from downtown Minneapolis, 12 minutes from downtown St Paul. Quick access to freeway. Bus stop in front of house on Como Ave and bus hub is 1 block away.
Other Things to Note
Eclectic blend of Japanese and Southwestern Native American aesthetic with lots of art and sculpture throughout. Very private, quiet and tranquil setting nestled in among the trees. Complete seclusion with the summer foliage, unique to an urban setting. Organic cotton sheets and towels provided. Early check in and late check out usually available upon request.
Please remove shoes upon entering (my black slate floors show everything). No smoking inside. This is not a party house! Although children are welcome, it is also not particularly kid friendly, it is more of an artist's retreat ideal for single persons or couples.
Your home was inviting, exactly like you described it and more. The neighborhood, was great, we did a lot of walking and enjoyed the restaurants that were nearby. We were there visiting our son and it was a great place to be when he was working. We enjoyed the unusual, but spiritual energy and space. Loved all the books and enjoyed your music selection. Felt like home. We would definitely love to stay again if our son stays in St Paul. Thanks so much Renee & Don
I had a wonderful experience at Doug's house. I arrived and found some fresh eggs left for my use. In addition the space was exactly as depicted in his photos. Very relaxing and comfortable. I was in town for a conference and this was a welcome respite from a full day in meetings. I did have some occasions where some reading was required, most of the lighting in the home is more mood based and not as bright as I prefer, but this was easily rectified with a lamp from Target. Doug was a great host and I would certainly recommend his home to anyone looking for a quiet relaxing place that is still close to everything you might want to do. And the reviews of the stereo are all correct, great sound!
This home is magical. If you are
looking for a home that lowers your stress levels look no further - you are home.
A hidden gem in northern St. Paul, it was truly a wonderful experience for my wife and myself. The layout is very unique and sets a relaxing ambience. We feel fortunate to have stayed here and highly recommend this place to others.
My husband and I enjoyed staying in this lovely and unique home. It was soothing to retreat to for resting and conversation and an excellent jumping off point for the local St Anthony Park area and the larger Twin Cities. If we have an occasion for another 'get away' to the Twin Cities we will certainly look up this site again. Our host left wonderfully explicit information about his home and the area.
This place was very comfortable and nice. It was also in a great location within walking distance to lots of food options. Doug was very friendly and left lots of helpful information.
My son and I had an incredibly warm welcome from Doug and his home is one of the most beautiful and peaceful places I've had the privilege to experience. Thank you so much.

I am a fine art photographer, photo workshop instructor and lover of strong coffee & loud music that travels constantly. I love beauty in many forms and am very influenced by Japanese style, gardens and architecture. My house reflects my interest in Mid-Century Modern and ecologically sustainable architecture and the decor is a blend of Native American and Eastern spirituality.
