About This Listing
The Desert Moon Retreat Guest House, on the same property as the Desert Moon Retreat, reveals spectacular mountain and desert views. The walled in landscape has been carefully planted with unique desert botanicals. A detached quest house, it faces the pool and contains many amenities, including internet access, flat screen TV with satellite dish, kitchen, full bath and a very comfortable queen size bed. The sitting area has a sofa that pulls out to a full size bed. A charming outdoor sitting area faces the pool and is great for dining al fresco-a perfect place for morning coffee and wildlife viewing. An outdoor grill is there also. Other sitting areas on the property allow for outdoor enjoyment of the various areas of the property. A citrus grove was planted for guests who might like some fresh orange juice, grapefruit, or perhaps a squeeze of lemon in their tea. Parking is available within close proximity to the guest house and is off street. This is a great place to stay for those interested in hiking the nearby Santa Catalina Mountains, or winter skiing at Mount Lemmon. Bicycle enthusiasts will enjoy the long stretch of nearby Brad Goreman Bike-way or riding up Catalina Highway. It is also perfect for those merely wanting a relaxing getaway. This is a unique desert experience!
Smoking is NOT allowed in the house.
PETS are permitted only with prior approval. Additional fee of $10/night per pet.
This unique guest house was everything my girlfriend and I were looking for. It is located in a beautiful part of Tucson in the foothills of Mt Lemon. It has easy access to downtown and was perfect for our day hikes in the local mountains. The landscaping was fascinating and gave a true sense of where we were. (you could hear coyotes doing their thing at night). We loved the Jacuzzi after out daily adventures! The interior decor was clean and set the mood for relaxing with softly curving walls, which my girlfriend affectionately dubbed the "Marshmallow House". While we spent the majority of our time enjoying the out of doors experiences, our times inside were made comfortable by the full kitchen allowing us to eat in when we wanted to. The wireless kept us in touch as needed, and the TV is a bonus for news. For those hikers, there is easy access to Sebino Recreation Park, Mount Lemmon, and Gate Pass (amazing Sunsets!). Carla was a gracious host providing great instructions and logistics. She respected our privacy and ensured we had everything we needed ahead of time. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to enjoy the Tucson area.

Thank you Mike! We appreciate your feedback and the information you mentioned was stated so articulately-future guests will appreciate knowing what they can expect in this special place on the edge of town. I had to laugh when I read about the "Marshmallow House"!!! No one has ever called it that before :-).
Thanks again for your input, we appreciate it and hope to be able to host you both again.
The guest house was a lovely little space with a huge window looking out into the desert. Neat round architecture. Great access to Saguaro National Park East, Mount Lemon, and Sabino Canyon. Everything was clean and comfy and the host provided clear directions on how to get there, location of key, etc. We would love to stay again.
Edie, thank you for your thoughtful review. We are happy that you enjoyed the property and its surroundings. We carefully chose the desert botanicals that surround the pool and are glad guests enjoy that. Thanks again for staying at our "round house" and if your travel plans bring you to Tucson again, please feel free to contact us.
This is a great little cottage! It is on the last street just before the road heads up to Mount Lemon, making it the perfect base to explore Tucson. It is cozy for two people and the kitchen is well supplied with pots, pans and utensils that it is easy to cook if you don't feel like going out. The yard and pool area is very relaxing if you just want to get away from everything. We can't wait to stay here again.
Thank you, Matthew, we are so glad you enjoyed yourself at our special place in the desert. And thanks for mentioning the kitchen-we try to make sure guests have what they need to cook anything, as once you get there, you don't want to leave!! Thanks again for your kind words. We wish you well and invite you back anytime.
Carla was very responsive as well as flexible with my schedule. The guest house was delightful. I loved the scenic surroundings and enjoyed my stay.
The guesthouse looks quite cute as in the picture, but what you don't see in pictures is the size of space (about 220 sqf).
I do not recommend this space because of the following reasons:
1) Unprofessional, untruthful and rude host with a chip on her shoulder.
--To get a sense of the host's character, please read her review of us and compare it to the other review. I cleaned the place better than I got them and took pictures.
2) Poor accommodations.
--On arrival the key didn't work because the lock was broken. We called Carla's partner, Mary's office and were told to leave a message. After we finally connected with Mary (who was NOT rude), we had to wait another ½ hour at the bigger house, which was hot, outside was about 105 and house had not been cooled. She gave us another key but since it was the lock that was broken, the new key worked only once. We could never lock our doors and took chances with our belongings, including 2 computers and an iPad. We never asked our host for anything, because she seemed so hostile.
--The space was dirty. There was dust and dried grease in kitchen, which I cleaned before and after, despite the cleaning fee of $65.
--There were no trash bags, no space to sit inside if there are 3 guest, no space to eat inside at all, kitchen was overfilled with stuff, so no place to put things. There is no dresser either. The aggregated concrete floors have stain on them and made my feet black when if I walked barefoot. During our entire stay (7 day reservation) no change of sheets or towels and the nearest laundry was 8 miles away.
3) Uncomfortable space
The ceiling of the guesthouse has no insolation at all, and on top of that it has skylights that bakes the place with heat. There are only two 10-inch wide windows that open, one in the bathroom and one to living space. No air circulation at all and you have to keep the AC running and leave the window open to get the stale air out. Without this, the place can be unbearably hot and stuffy in the summer. Also, there are about 3-4 steps from the sleeping area to the bathroom, can be dangerous at night. The light fixture worked with a sound sensor, so a cough, or any other sound turned the lights on in the middle of the night. If you are going there for the desert quiet, the sound of artificial stream connecting to the pool is constant as is the desert frogs that live there because of running water.
Overall, our experience there was my only negative one in any of my vacation rental experiences (Europe and the US). Frankly, it was so bad we paid for seven nights and vacated after six.
This guest must have been disgruntled as soon as she landed. Most of what she wrote is simply not true. The guest house is 400 square feet, not 220 as she states. There is no one here names Mary, someone she mentioned two or three times. The lock was not broken, it is new. I tried it after she left and it worked easily. There are two large drawers for storage of clothes and a small closet, there is space in the kitchen for storing food. This guest house has no laundry facilities, so we bring fresh linens out to the guest every 6-7 days or sooner if requested and are happy to do that. Natural air circulation consists of the two windows mentioned and a sliding glass door that is screened. The light fixture with a sensor is there so guests can quickly turn lights on when entering at night and can be unplugged-an easy solution. The kitchen was not dirty as she states, I cleaned it before her arrival and after and clean it the way I would want it cleaned if I were staying there. Had this guest mentioned her unhappiness as soon as she felt this way, we would have either offered one of our other rentals, one of which is in the same neighborhood and was vacant at the time or refunded her so she could choose her own accommodations. But mentioning it after the fact does not solve her issues. Please read our other reviews, our intention is to have happy guests that want to return. And we have many happy guests, and many repeat visitors. Read all of our reviews at all of our advertising sites and you will see that people LOVE our rentals and are treated well. That is because we appreciate our guests. We are very sorry this guest was so negative and responded this way and we wish we could have been given the chance to resolve her issues while she was here.
