The Desert Moon Retreat is surrounded by the towering saguaro cacti of the Sonoran Desert but just minutes away from town. There is the main house with 2 bed/2 baths or the studio guest house to choose from. Both share the pool area.
This award winning architectural wonder has all round rooms reminiscent of the Hopi Indian's historic Kiva. With its plan in the shape of the crescent moon, architect Alex Riley designed this residence in 1984 to contain sculptural spaces with floor to ceiling windows that capture the mountain, city and desert views. It is located at the base of the Santa Catalina Mountains in a quiet desert setting complete with a collection of botanical cactus, succulents and other native and near native desert plantings. The rooms are spacious, the accommodations are luxurious and guests come to rejuvenate and relax while immersing themselves in the Sonoran Desert with all of its spectacular flora and fauna. This 3.5 acre property contains many outdoor spaces perfect for enjoying the sunrise, outdoor dining or the colorful sunsets. The location is perfect for winter skiers, year round bicycling, golf, mountain hiking, and much more! The Desert Moon Retreat has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a queen size sofa-bed, full kitchen abundant with cooking utensils, large side by side refrigerator, microwave, and cappuccino maker, an outdoor grill, many outdoor sitting areas, a wonderful pool, new hot tub, two fireplaces, a dining area, breakfast nook, two offices, two large walk in closets, washer and dryer and outdoor sitting areas off of each bedroom.

We loved the location of Desert Moon. We found it quiet and relaxing. The home was comfortable - beds and furniture. All was good. Very interesting home.
Thank you for a lovely place to stay.
It was wonderful! I'm still talking about it. Maria responded promptly to one little TV issue. Would return in a heartbeat!
This isn't just a house -- it's a work of art! My husband and I spent Christmas week there. I will always remember the delight we felt when we first walked in the door of this beautiful little place. It's even more captivating than what the website photos show, because the views from every window are just spectacular. It was lovely and quiet, and even with the doors and windows closed because of the cold, we were still able to hear the little waterfall over some rocks to the pool. Each room had unique artwork and wonderful fixtures that we really enjoyed. The whole house seems "hand-made", and there isn't a straight wall anywhere. Very organic and original. The furniture in the living room is VERY comfortable, and we loved curling up on the big curved gray leather sofa to read. There are two kiva fireplaces -- one in the kitchen and one in the living room, neither of which are operational. It would have been so nice to have a fire in the living room on those cold nights, but I can certainly understand the owner's reluctance to risk a possible accident there. There are lots of books and magazines in the little round office shelves, along with some games. We never saw or heard from the owner(s) during our visit. I did call to see if I could get some shopping recommendations, and Maria was very helpful with that. (She made the little curly sculpture on the wall above the kiva fireplace in the kitchen!) We didn't lack for anything. We loved going for long walks. There are plenty of nearby flat places to walk, but also some pretty big hills for a more strenuous workout. The house is in a lovely neighborhood, which has a lot of unique adobe-style architecture and desert landscaping that you don't see anywhere else except Arizona and New Mexico, so that was fun. The kitchen was well equipped. We fixed a Christmas dinner for four, and it was great! There is a great coffee/expresso-maker (be sure to bring #4 cone filters -- we couldn't find any in the kitchen). We really appreciated having a washer and dryer in the house! There were a few little annoyances.... One was the odd choice of flooring throughout the house. It's a rough cement embedded with pebbles, some of which are pretty sharp (the same as outside around the pool area) and it was uncomfortable to walk on in bare feet and even socks. It was a bit of a nuisance to have to grope around in the dark for shoes in order to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. Bring slippers.... Another annoyance was the VERY loud heating/cooling system that was located right behind the headboard wall of the second bedroom. Bring earplugs! (The noise is only bothersome in this one room.) Internet speed is pretty slow.... In spite of these, I highly recommend this enchanting house, which has everything you...
The desert moon retreat was one of the most beautiful spaces I have ever stayed in. Carla was very helpful. I want to come back!
Place was fantastic. What an amazing building. Wonderful lighting throughout. I would definitely stay here again.
This quaint and somewhat-isolated house is situated close to Mt Lemmon NE of downtown Tucson and offers great mountain views. The two quiet bedrooms are at opposite ends of the house. The lovely gardens are planted with various cactus and succulent plants and the hot tub is very private. The kitchen worked well for all four of us who liked to cook. The owners were very accommodating of our few requests.
Amazing house in an amazing location. Right near the base to the scenic drive up Mt. Lemmon. Beautifully funky house big enough for 3 families though for us it was just 4 of us including our nanny. The house is in an area where other homes are nearby but you wouldn't know it, one of the great things about the house and that area. Feels like you're in the desert with no one around, yet there's everything you need in the way of food and other shopping within 5 or 10 minutes drive. We were there in mid October so the pool wasn't as warm as we'd hoped but still usable. The hot tub made up for it.
