Welcome home! This lovely bungalow has 2 large, comfortable ensuite bedrooms, set amid large trees and a mature gardens. Perfect for short and medium-term rental, great for families, tourism or business!
Welcome home! Your perfect home away from home for long or short-term rental! This is a charming and spacious bungalow, which I purchased in 2012 and renovated to comprise ensuite bedrooms with all new fixtures. The home boasts a mature garden with flowering plants. Each of the two ensuite bedrooms comfortably fits 2 people and have ample closet space: Bedroom1: Queen-size bed, with shower; Bedroom2: King-size, with tub and shower. The home is fully serviced, with 3 full-time staff.
The large flatscreen smart TV is wifi enabled. There is also an HDMI cable for streaming from a laptop. If you stream from an iPad, you’ll need to download Samsung TV Media Player HD (ZappoTV). Netflix is now available in Kenya! Sign into your account or sign up for a minimal monthly fee. The basic DSTv (cable) bouquet is available, and guests can upgrade at their own cost. There are hundreds of DVDs, help yourselves, but please treat with care and return to the same place.
Lights and hot water are all powered by solar. Power during blackouts is ensured by a backup inverter power supply. Unlimited high speed internet (wifi) is available.
The house has been renovated with special touches, such as natural mazeras stone floors (bathrooms and kitchen), hardwood flooring in living and dining area, and Kitengela hand-crafted glass sinks and accents throughout.
The sitting room has a large wood-burning fireplace (firewood is on site, just ask!). A gas BBQ grill is available, and the covered terrace is perfect for warm evenings!
Monthly/long-term rental includes:
3 full-time staff, electricity, water, security (incl. alarm, dogs and the community gate), high-speed wireless internet, weekly rubbish collection. For stays over 1 month, you will be responsible for replenishing the cooking gas and cleaning supplies as needed.
Since the house is rented while I am away, guests will have access to the entire house and gardens, which includes a large gourmet kitchen, dining and living rooms (w/fireplace), central courtyard (with gas BBQ) and two large dining terraces/veranda. There is an extensive book and DVD library, which you are welcome to enjoy – we only ask that you treat them with care and return them where you found them! There are two spacious ensuite bedrooms available for guests, and the 3rd (my) bedroom remains locked.
Interaction with guests
I currently divide my time between Nairobi, Dakar, and New York, and my daughter is living/working in France. In our absence, the house is well cared for by my dedicated and long-serving staff of three:
Mbithe, housekeeper - and her two young daughters Abby and Alina;
Too, gardener/handyman; and
They all live on the property in a separate house at the top of the compound, and are on hand for any assistance guests may require.
Mbithe cleans and dusts the house daily - please let her know if you wish to not be disturbed.
In case of anything, I am only an email or sms message away! The staff are in regular contact with me.
We can also arrange airport collection/drop-off with a trusted taxi (paid directly by guest). If you need any foodstuffs in the house upon your arrival, this can also be arranged, and you can reimburse the staff.
The house is just minutes away from The Hub, Nairobi's newest (and second largest) mall – offering a dazzling array of retail and entertainment set on 20 acres with a 22,000 sq ft piazza, lake and children's play area! The French retail giant Carrefour has opened a 6,000 sq ft supermarket at the mall with a great selection! Also at the Hub are many restaurants: a Carnivore branch, Seafood, Italian, Indian, Spanish, Afghan, and various fast food chains...
Just beyond The Hub, at the Karen shopping centre are more supermarkets (Nakumatt, KPS and Chandarana), banks, post office, specialty shops, and salons. There are numerous restaurants and bars in the area, including Dari, J's, Qué Pasa, Tamambo/Karen Blixen Coffee Garden, Open House, Purdy Arms, Haru Japanese, Talisman and others.
Nearby attractions include: Nairobi National Park (and Safari Walk), Bomas of Kenya, Giraffe Centre, Mamba Village (crocodile Farm), Karen Blixen Museum, Daphne Sheldrick Animal Orphanage, the Ngong Hills and the Great Rift Valley.
Arriving at JKIA, it is best to take a taxi to Karen, which can run bet. Kshs 2,500 and 3,000 (US$20-25). In and around Nairobi, 'public' transport is complicated at best; taxis provide a reliable (if not slightly costly) alternative. Within Karen, there is easy public transport from nearby the house to the Karen shopping centre. The new Southern Bypass enables quick access to Lang'ata and Mombasa Roads, as well as Runda, Gigiri and Lavington, Westlands/Waiyaki Way in the other direction.
The smartphone riding service, Über, is now available in Kenya; but a new Kenyan app, Little Rider, provides fast and efficient service in new cars, and cheaper than Über and local taxis – but you can only pay with cash or M-Pesa. A Little Cab from the house to the airport via the new Bypass (highway) takes only 40min and costs only 1,500/=.
Other things to note
Monthly/long-term rental includes: 3 full-time staff, electricity, water, security (incl. alarm, dogs and the community gate), high-speed internet, weekly rubbish collection. You will be responsible for replenishing the cooking gas and cleaning materials as needed (eg. soaps, detergent, toilet paper etc...)
If you need laundry done, including sheets and towels, please let Mbithe know and she will do it! Please let the housekeeper know if you need anything ironed.
Mbithe's responsibilities include housekeeping and management; if you would like her to cook (she recently completed cooking classes) or babysit, this can be arranged at an extra cost that you can negotiate with her directly.
If you need firewood, please ask Too!
Isaya, the watchman, is strict with his working hours: 6pm-6am. If you are leaving to catch a flight in the wee hours of the morning, or just after 6am, please let him know. During the day, Too is in charge of opening/closing the gate (just hoot when you are leaving!).
If you have enjoyed your stay and the staff have been helpful, please consider offering them something extra when you leave, or small gifts for the girls, Abby and Alina.
Please enjoy my house, which was renovated with love – and treat the house, furnishings and property with care and respect. Please report any breakages or damage to Mbithe.
Please note that the objects in the glass-doored cabinets in the sitting and dining room are for DISPLAY ONLY, not for use.
Please do NOT use any metal utensils or steel wire on the non-stick cookware.
In the event of a power outage and the house is running on the inverter (there will be no light on the microwave), DO NOT USE the electric kettle, toaster or iron, as these will drain the inverter almost immediately.
No guests allowed beyond those approved in the booking, except with prior approval.
Cancel up to 5 days before your trip and get a full refund, including service fees.
