Casa Guadalupe is a spacious, colorful, and tranquil hideaway in the central historic district of Mérida. One block away begins the city's culinary epicenter, with five of the city's top restaurants, two cafes, and a handmade ice cream shop. It's also an easy walk to museums, outdoor concerts, and shops on the elegant Paseo de Montejo. Mérida is a vibrant cultural center, the safest city in México, and central to dozens of Mayan archeological sites.

The space
At Casa Guadalupe color abounds and outdoor living prevails. The central courtyard is surrounded by a lush tropical garden. The pool is perfect for cooling off in the afternoon. The two main bedrooms open onto the patio; both have optional air conditioning for a small extra charge.
After a siesta, head to the private rooftop patio to catch a breeze while watching the sunset. There, a glass-walled palapa with a futon sofa offers a spare living room. For the slightly more venturesome, it easily converts to a third bedroom with its own sink (to reduce trips downstairs in the rain or nighttime).
Be sure to look at all the photos!

Where you’ll be

Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico

Museums, concerts and markets are all within an easy walk from Casa Guadalupe. As you venture down calle 47, within two blocks you will encounter a plethora of top-rated restaurants: Michaela Mar y Leña, Oliva Enoteca, Catrin, 130°, and Sayonara, as well as cafes Latte Quattro Sette and Mermalada, and PipiCuCu hand-made ice cream shop. In the third block El Lucero del Alba serves some of Mérida's best "botanas" (free appetizers) with your beverage. Next, you arrive at the "remate" (beginning) of the beautiful Paseo de Montejo. There, every Saturday night, mingle with locals enjoying the authentic music, food, and artisans at the "Noche Mexicana." And who can resist a stroll - or a carriage ride - down the Paseo? Two more blocks will bring you to our local hub, Santa Ana square, with its market (fresh tortillas, produce, flowers, spices - Rafaeil, our favorite, has become a family friend), outdoor food court (try the tacos and a fruit smoothie), and, of course, music!

Mérida is a central location for exploring Mayan archeological sites. Chichen Itza, Uxmal, Ek Balam, and many smaller gems, such as Dzibichaltun, Kabah, Labna, Sayil and Xlapak, are all within two hours' drive.

Yucatán is dotted with magical cenotes (natural sinkholes) to swim in. And, the beach in Progreso is only 18 miles away!

Once you fall in love with Mérida, you'll want to return again and again!

My husband and I are retired travelers who enjoy equally the pleasures of Maine and Mexico. We prefer staying in a home rather than a hotel. In our home we try to surround our selves with beautifully crafted objects by local artists. We are also very practical, and especially love to cook! It gives us added pleasure to share our homes with others when we are not there ourselves.
