House - Private room · Lodge Hill Barn, Hoddern Farm, Peacehaven, England BN10 8AR, United Kingdom

Hi - we have a lovely house and garden, very traditional but modernised. This year we would like to let for a long summer period while we holiday ourselves. Other than that we feel best offering just one double room and possible a childrens room.

Hi - we have a lovely house and garden, very traditional but modernised. This year we would like to let for a long summer period while we holiday ourselves. Other than that we feel best offering just one double room and possible a childrens room.

The Space

During July/August we are open to renting the whole house for a long period and the price is negotiable.

The price displayed is a general per person per night guide. Prices for more rooms or whole house on application.

Normally, for nightly stays, we can offer accommodation for a couple or small family only. This does not apply to whole house rental. Ask if you like, we will make exceptions at times. Sorry but we are unsuitable for groups.

Six miles along the coast from Brighton and 6 miles south of Lewes, in the calm and beauty of the South Downs National Park, but close to the facilities of Peacehaven. One hour from London by train from Newhaven, which is also the ferry port to Dieppe, France. There are local buses and trains but own transport is preferable to take full advantage of the area.

We enjoy meeting people but if we are there we prefer to accommodate adults, couples or singles. A family is possible but more difficult for us. Room/s only or B&B.

Would you like to like to rent the whole house for Summer 2014? Jun/July to September maybe?

At certain times, Summer, Xmas/New Year it may be possible to rent the whole house, preferably to a family and preferably a family who like music and gardens as we have 3 pianos and a big garden! We can negotiate on the price for that.

All sleeping accommodation, including ours, is on the ground floor, and upstairs, under a large beamed ceiling is an open plan living/dining area with separate kitchen. The upstairs has picture windows overlooking the large garden, across the grazing pastures used by the stables next door, to the sea in the distance.

You will be in our traditional, family, English house in the Sussex countryside. It's our home so we will usually be there too. Lynnette teaches Suzuki piano to children so you may be there when some lessons are on, twice a week in the afternoon, in the music room. Colin teaches photography, does the garden, enjoys cooking and cycling and tennis... We live in France for part of the year and speak passable French! We have two children, grown and flown, and two grandchildren, and they have a room here which can be used by visiting children, next to the main guest room.

Great views, walks on the doorstep and access to Brighton, the opera at Glyndebourne, Eastbourne tennis, historic and National Trust houses, the South Downs Way, and the Dieppe ferry! Lots of lovely local pubs and tea shops as well as the attractions of 'London on Sea" i.e. Brighton! The beaches and coastal walks are close. We know a lot of the walks and sites and can help you choose.

Lovely garden, lovely house, part of one of the longest barns around. In terms of sleeping arrangements, when we are there and renting out a room for instance we can offer our guest room which is beamed and cosy and there is a bath/wc for your use outside your room. There is also another possibility if you are more than two sharing - the 'inside/outside' room, a lovely room with a firm sofa bed and access to the patio. There is a childrens bedroom with an adult size bed and a smaller, child's, bed. Also a single pullout bed up in the rafters, for the young at heart. Our bedroom is on the same (ground) floor as the guest rooms but we have our own en-suite, so we only cross in the passageways and upstairs. Upstairs is the main living area with high beams, a ceiling fan, woodburning stove and inspiring views over the garden, fields with horses and in the distance, the sea. The upstairs is fairly open plan and large with living space, the kitchen (great views too!) and a dining area, and the grand piano (plus a big TV and Freesat and wi-fi).

The house is pretty open but you will of course have total privacy in your room. The 'inside outside' room can be used as a sitting area. You may use the kitchen to make drinks etc. More extensive use of the kitchen is only by prior arrangement.

Being all wooden construction the noise of folk moving around upstairs can be disturbing for those trying to sleep below so please be aware that we wear slippers and try not to make noise after a reasonable hour.

It's a bit more of an effort for the 'casual traveller' without transport as the access is off the main road and a little walk. You will ideally have a car otherwise you will need to walk to the bus stop, about 10 minutes away into Peacehaven.

You are within easy reach of a lot of wonderful Sussex pubs, National Trust properties, Glyndebourne Opera etc, and it's about and hour by train to London.

We are very friendly and helpful and want you to have a good time so can help you get oriented, If you were going to the opera we could arrange a price to include transport etc.

One main houserule... absolutely NO SMOKING.

  • My husband, my son and me stayed with Colin and Lynette on New Years Eve. We went to a party nearby and used their house as a base. We booked very last minute. The hosts were very accomodating and the rooms were stylish, comfortable and super clean. Their house and the surrounding area is just beautiful. Colin and Lynette have the right mix of friendliness and leaving you to enjoy your stay. We couldn't have asked for more. Really impressed and we hope this review reflects that. Thanks so much!

  • We had a fabulous time with Colin and his lovely wife Lynette! We only needed to stay a couple of nights during the Tour de France and they were kind enough to let us just one room instead of their whole home.
Their home is in a charming little village nestled up near some ski resorts in northern Hautes-Alpes. The views are incredible and seem to be lots of trails and quiet roads nearby. I'm sure it's an ideal location for skiing in the winter.
My husband and I adored Colin and his wife...such generous and gracious hosts. We have made good friends in them!

Hi - teacher of Photography living partly in Sussex UK and partly in France. Happy and interested and sporty... skiing, tennis, cycling. My wife teaches children to play the piano, Suzuki method. She also helps organise the South Down Suzuki Group and is very involved in her choir - there's a lot of music around. We are both former secondary school teachers in London. We take immense pleasure in being part of the lives of our young grandchildren! We travel to San Diego yearly if we can. I am STILL learning to surf. STILL learning to play the guitar, I meditate daily and it's a constant rejuvenation. We have bought Kindles and are STILL wondering if we will really get on with them, it's not the same is it?
