The Space

We offer space, light, serene privacy, in a creative environment with history. Once upon a time, our home was an urban dairy with a barn for the horse and cart and a few cows located in the rear of the house, where you don't hear the city bustle. After an extensive renovation, the barn's hayloft is now a living room, and an elevated loft is the bedroom with a Dutch "trijfelaar" sized bed (that it is a huge single or an intimate double-140cm wide). The slanted roof gives you an outdoor feeling of sleeping under a tent. The extra single bed is in the living room area - perfect for a child or extra adult. There is separate kitchen/dining area, with everything you need to cook at home. The bathroom is small with recently renovated shower, sink & toliet.

The windows open up to our courtyard garden. It is a quiet oasis next to the towering skyrises of ministries around us. In good weather we dine outside, enjoy a bottle of wine, you are welcome to join us.

We know that travelling is more than a destination and a bed. It's the smells, tastes, sounds, people you encounter abroad. So we provide our guests with recommendations of our local favorites. We also tease your tastebuds with some of our Dutch breakfast specialities. You might like them so much that you'll want to buy to bring home.

Jazz lover? Foodie? Fashionista? Design afficiendo? Artist? Dancer? Writer? Musician? If we don't have the answers to satisfy your cravings, we have a fantastic circle of creative friends who most certainly will.

Interaction with Guests

We enjoy interacting with our guests when they have time and I if they feel comfortable with us. Care to join us for a glass of something? a snack? Our guests are typically creative thinkers and do-ers. They select The Canal House cause they have a creative side too and they want to interact and learn more about The Hague as we want to learn about them and their part of the world. I would like to thank each guest for enriching our lives in so many ways. Their presence here also gives our city a new dynamic.
** Need souveniers for folks back home? Cheese or stroopwafels? Let us know in advance and we can arrange the quantities you need to bring them home. Our culinary friends are award winning artisanal craftsmen that deliver to the likes of the royal family.

The Neighborhood

Our neighborhood is charming yet cosmopolitan. van Gogh once lived across the canal, contemporary artists live now all around us, and for good reason: We are located on a beautiful tree lined canal, in the center of The Hague, 5 minute walk from Centraal Station - all types of transportation are available: trains (local & international) trams, busses, taxis, bikes, paddle boats, canoes. SixT Rental Car just opened in the adjoining Babylon complex.

From our location, you are a 10 min. walk from Mauritshuis Museum, Houses of Parlement, shopping areas (ie.Spui, Grote Markt, Denneweg, Noordeinde). Den Haag boosts better and a wider range of Chinese and Indonesian cuisines than Amsterdam. Our Chinatown also has Korean, Vietnamese, Japanese,& Thai. Go in any direction we have restaurants of every imaginable cuisine (Lebanese, Italian, Spanish Tapas, Vegetarian, French, Indian, Turkish, Irish pubs, Nieuwe Dutch & Scandinavian cuisines are equally awesome!) AND every amenity possible: Albert Heijn grocery store, several bakers, a drycleaner, drugstore, barber, liquor/wine store, Starbucks, Burger King, newspaper & magazine stands, ATM, everything! For visiting academics & students, The Canal House is located minutes from The Hague University, The Hague campus of Leiden University, The Open University & University for Peace, The Hague Academy of International Law.
