About This Listing
If you are a creative-traveller, entrepreneur, international teacher/student, visiting NGOer in peace making or security, a travelling intellectual - look no further.
We offer an urban paradise with space, light and creativity in the city center.
A mix of design vs. art, history vs. now - the apartment displays our appreciation for both. We hope you do too.
We offer space, light, serene privacy, in a creative environment with history. Once upon a time, our home was an urban dairy with a barn for the horse and cart and a few cows located in the rear of the house, where you don't hear the city bustle. After an extensive renovation, the barn's hayloft is now a living room, and an elevated loft is the bedroom with a Dutch "trijfelaar" sized bed (that it is a huge single or an intimate double-140cm wide). The slanted roof gives you an outdoor feeling of sleeping under a tent. The extra single bed is in the living room area - perfect for a child or extra adult. There is separate kitchen/dining area, with everything you need to cook at home. The bathroom is small and simple - shower stall, sink & toliet.
The windows open up to our courtyard garden. It is a quiet oasis next to the towering skyrises of Ministeries around us. In good weather we dine outside, enjoy a bottle of wine, you are welcome to join us.
We know that travelling is more than a destination and a bed. It's the smells, tastes, sounds, people you encounter abroad. So we provide our guests with recommendations of our local favorites. We also tease your tastebuds with some of our Dutch breakfast specialities. You might like them so much that you'll want to buy to bring home.
HOW CAN WE SATISFY YOUR DESIRES?
Jazz lover? Foodie? Fashionista? Design afficiendo? Artist? Dancer? Writer? Musician? If we don't have the answers to satisfy your cravings, we have a fantastic circle of creative friends who most certainly will.

It was such a pleasure to stay at Sonia's place. The home is full of sunlight and creative energy, and Sonia is an amazing host! I felt really comfortable, at home and taken care. If you are looking for a comfortable, spacious and lively place to stay, this is a wonderful home. I highly recommend it!
Sonia's canal house is a hidden gem conveniently located close to the central station and to the museums, etc.
We were very comfortable there plus Sonia generously provided extra treats for breakfast. She also made sure to greet us, was very helpful with suggestions for our itinerary and even printed out some online tickets. A gracious host and nice environment!
Glad to have facilitated your museum visits. I am sorry that we didn't have more time to get to know each other better. I would have loved to have heard all the stories of your exotic adventures and civil rights issues you encountered in the world. Bless you both for the great things you have accomplished. Hope to see you again!
Sonia made us feel very welcome. Lovely loft apartment. Great home made cereal and spreads etc was left for our use. Very central easy walk to the train station. The only negative was that I couldn't get access to the washing machine as it was in her joining house and was charged extra for my washing. Thanks for all your assistance.
Jeanette, glad that you enjoyed your stay and the homemade goodies I provide my guests at the Canal House. In my house manual use of the washing machine is explained. Sorry that you expected a free wash, but it costs energy, resources and time. To prevent any future misunderstandings I'll add this detail to my description.
Safe travels & look forward to hosting you again.
Excellent we in den Haag un Sonia's House. She is wonderfull, everything was perfect and the flat more beautifull than pictures ! Thank you !
We had a very good time in your house and it is also super quiet-even you are in the Middle of the City. Du bist eine hervorragende Gastgeberin.
Sonia is a very friendly and passionate host, she shared deli food with us, recommended us a good restaurant. We love her artistic home, it's in a perfect location. We did enjoy our trip in Den Haag. Thank you Sonia.
Sonia was a great host. My wife and I stayed for two nights and would definitly go back. It was our first time to The Hague and Sonia kept in contact and made sure she was there to help when we arrived. She gave us so many suggestions on what to see, do and where to eat. It was all great advice. We wished we stayed longer.
Additionally she went the extra mile and help with suggestions for the next leg of our trip along with taking some much needed washing off our hands. It was like a home away from home.
About the Host, Sonia
WHO ARE WE?
Our family prefers airbnb over hotels almost everywhere we travel. We enjoy meeting locals on their own turf and understanding the cultures from the inside out. I'm an American Born Chinese (ABC) who fell in love with Holland over 27 years ago. So much so, that I married a Dutchman and have 2 daughters (22 & 15) that embrace all 3 cultures. The Hague is a gem of a city known for it's beautiful surroundings and importance on the world stage for peace & human rights. The city of The Hague honored us with the title "Creative Ambassador" in 2010 for our design work contributions. As a host it is a grea priviledge to meet people from all over the world who create world peace and security, sustainable energy, and improve our environment. Looking forward to being inspired by you and we hope to do the same during your stay with us.
