  • We had a great stay in Old Town! We did not personally meet JoAnne, but the process of checking in and checking out was very easy and smooth. Location was fantastic and JoAnne was quick to answer any questions via text. Best part of staying at this location besides the comfortable bed and cleanliness was Twin Anchors one block away. They are famous for their ribs and we can see why.

  • Lovely apartment - we just used it for sleeping and it was very comfortable for that purpose. Best thing about the place for us was the location. Lovely neighbourhood with some good food places (cafesushi - nice sushi and BYO; Eva's cafe for coffee and muffins which is handy for the train station; old town ale house for a drink - covered in bizarre/great portraits; brilliant improv at 10pm at the comedy club close by; nookies for great eggs benedict and pancakes; twin anchors for drinks and ribs which is a few doors down form apartment and was always busy)- (email hidden) for the best options as we found this a great help. Very close to the train and we used this for all our travel around - easy trip in on train from O'Hare airport and we had a similarly easy trip out to midway when we left. Only con was a little confusion about check-in and check-out but this was mainly due to our lack of access to wifi enroute, making it difficult to read email contact - advise to ring a few days ahead and sort this out as we were probably too relaxed about making sure we knew the details before we arrived! Also, wifi access was poor with the connection dropping constantly - however almost every cafe/restaurant we went to had a connection and we only really needed it to check up booked trips etc so it wasn't a major disruption for us. We didn't flag this with the hosts as we didn't spend a lot of time at the apartment but I'm sure they would have sorted it based on our other contact with them (which was relaxed and helpful). Would definitely recommend this place as a base for seeing Chicago - we had a great trip, thanks.

  • Great location, only two blocks to Brown Line, close to grocery store, restaurants and comedy clubs. We were booked for 2R but were put in 1R which was better as it was on ground floor. Building is old (as it was located in Old Chicago) but was full of character. Unit was clean and furniture was more than adequate.

  • The studio was perfect for a fun trip to Chicago. It is close to public transit and Old Town. While working remotely, the wifi was fast and worked without a hitch. The bathroom was recently remodeled and looks good. JoAnne was very welcoming and accommodating with check in and check out. We would definitely stay here again!

  • The apartment is wonderful--very clean and with all the supplies necessary for a comfortable stay. The neighborhood is fantastic, too. We got to the Lincoln Park Zoo and a few of the terrific restaurants just a few blocks away. We hope to stay here again soon!

  • This place was great~ Joanne was easy to get in touch with and available if we needed something. The location was PERFECT~ walking distance to the zoo/Lake Michigan/The Second City/Old Town. We loved the spot. Only complaint was that the sound of the heating vent was very noisy- we had to turn it off at night in order to sleep, which made for some chilly sleeping. All in all a good experience, though.

  • The apartment is in a great location and very close to transportation.
The neighborhood is great - Old Town is just a 5 minute walk away.

  • This place was great. Very easy to get around. One of my favorite areas in Chicago. Joanne was very proactive in reaching out to us. Only note I would have, is that while the wifi works most of the time, it can be quite spotty and very slow, making it hard to work remotely from there. That said, it is in walking distance to several cafes with free wifi. I would stay here again for sure.

  • Host was not at property at specified arrival time and did not answer repeated phone calls. Thankfully Airbnb customer service was helpful and was able to reach the host, causing our wait in the cold to be capped at 30 minutes.

I worked with Joanne to book our stay. I made it extremely clear to her that we would be arriving around 8:30 am on Friday morning and she verified that she would be there at that time to let us in.

I sent Joanne an email the day before our arrival to remind her of our arrival time and she did not respond. I sent her a text message upon our arrival to the airport in Chicago and again no response. Finally, when we arrived at the house, she was not there and she did not answer her cell phone despite my repeated calls. I was forced to call Airbnb regarding this matter, and they were able to reach Joanne - funny that she would answer their call and not mine. I was told by Airbnb that Joanne would call me right away but she did not and I had to wait another 10 minutes to hear from her. Finally she called me and informed me of the location of the key to the front door. It's fine that she was not there to let us in but she should have contacted me earlier aboutt he keys so as to not have us waiting in the cold and, worse, nervous that our housing for our trip fell through.

The apartment was in fine condition - it looked a little worn but was clean. Aside from the problem with getting into the apartment, everything else was fine, but that problem was a huge one, and the main reason for the low rating.

  • We had a great stay at JoAnne and Steve's place. Perfectly located near the city center, the lake and public transportation.
