  • Gary was a welcoming host. He gave us some great exploring & eating recommendations for the area which proved to be some of our favourite moments of our vacation. The apartment itself is really lovely--clean, bright, airy, roomy, and comfortable. The bed is very soft. It was a great spot to chill out after a day of sightseeing. There are lovely spots to watch the sunrise--whether on the spacious balcony, or via a short walk to a grove of ironwood trees that overlooks the crashing waves. Really beautiful & peaceful. We stayed here for four nights in which we explored the Pahoa & Puna areas, Hilo and went as far as Waimea & Mauna Kea. Currently, the morning & evening rush hour traffic into Hilo and out of it is pretty bad (road improvement happening) so we learned to avoid the peak times. This spot is a must-stay if you're keen to explore this side of the island--lots of fun and magical little spots within a short drive (which Gary has pictured above).

  • we had a great time staying at makana kai and would highly recommend it to others visiting the area!

  • We had a wonderful three night stay at Makana Kai. The apartment is spacious, beautifully decorated and was immaculately clean. The veranda has a view of the ocean which is a couple of blocks away. A highlight of our stay was taking a walk the first night and seeing a pair of humpback whales swim by just off shore. There is a kitchenette downstairs and a seating and sleeping area upstairs. There is no stove or oven, but there is a toaster, microwave, electric frying pan, rice maker, griddle and coffee maker. So you can definitely make meals if you choose. There was some fruit and banana bread waiting for us when we arrived which is a very nice welcoming touch. Other nice amenities were beach towels and a cooler. There is also a handy binder in the apartment with information on local sights and restaurants. Our one complaint is that the bed was too soft. We prefer firm, springy beds and this was the kind of mattress that you sink into. On our last day, we realized that there was some sort of pillow top over the actual mattress which we probably should have removed.

  • Gary and Karen are gems! From our first contact, Gary was informative and so easy to work with. He got right back to my inquiry via airbnb regarding available dates - there was no waiting for a response and we had not planned well in advance. His communications were thorough and precise. When we arrived, we were so pleased with the apartment. Lovely grounds, private entrance, awesome apartment floorplan with plenty of space for two people. Clean and all the appliances, dishes, cookware you need. I want to rip out all my carpeting at home and put in his tile! Huge bathroom with great shower. Great assortment of books and info-filled binder with everything going on at the island. The lanai was perfect for morning coffee or evening wine with the roar of the crashing waves lulling you into silence. Great neighborhood away from noise and I started to recognize the neighbors walking their dogs! No hesitation to recommend or return. Thanks Gary and Karen! Bev & Dave

  • Gary and Karen's ocean view apartment was wonderful! The apartment is spotless and beautifully decorated. We spent a lot of time on the lanai watching the sunrise or moonrise coming up over the ocean, and watching the multitude of little colorful birds in the tree next to the lanai. We were able to hike to a secluded white sand beach because we were provided this information/ location in the apartment visitor guide. Gary and Karen were the perfect hosts. Fruit and Banana bread...yum!

  • We have just returned from a week's stay at Makana Kai and it is one of the loveliest places we have been. Gary and Karen were superb hosts - readily available but never intrusive, and a really friendly, helpful couple. The apartment is great - airy, comfortable and spacious with very good quality and carefully chosen furnishings and equipment. Everything we needed to make our stay a success was provided including extensive local information, wifi connection and a good selection of reading matter as well as TV / DVD (which we didn't use).

Whether you are interested in the volcanic landscapes, snorkelling amongst the coral, being immersed in tropical vegetation, visiting the local quirky townships or just relaxing and enjoying the scenery and laid back Hawai'ian lifestyle, Makana Kai is the ideal location, nestling amongst the palm trees a stone's throw from the Pacific ocean.

If only it wasn't half way round the world from us we'd be regular visitors but we do hope to return some time.

Mahalo to Gary and Karen for sharing their idyllic home,

  • We stayed at Gary's place for three nights and did enjoy our stay very much. From there we did visit Mauna Kea and the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
Gary was a great host, very pleasant and helpful. Makana Kai is a beautiful and cozy place which was very clean. There was coffee, tea, fresh fruits and even a banana bread ready for us when we arrived!
We do highly recommend this place and would love to stay there again one day.

  • If you're looking for a lovely, relaxing setting and a geat host, this is the place for you. The acommodation was upscale and clean, true to the photos on ABNB. The little deck has a wonderful ocean view and the volcanic ocean cliffs are a stroll away and can provide endless opportunity for awe and/or meditative experience. And there are whales now and then passing by. Ask about the fish and chips place in Pahoa town. Get the ono.

  • We had a perfect time at Gary's place. Even the bad weather could not change the warm and perfect feeling we experienced at Makana Kai. When we arrived Gary and his wife offered us fresh bananas, papayas, Kona coffee and a self-made banana bread. The apartment is much more bigger than on the pictures and you are close to the main attractions on the east side of Big Island. Everything was clean and looked like we were the first guests there.
    Very good place to stay!

  • Ii's a gem! If you want a piece of paradise, that's it!. The apartment has everything you need .Nested in the jungle with a beutiful view of the ocean, surrounded by tropical vegetation. You wake up to the singing of colourful bird swhose singing you will hear for the rest of the day. If you are a morning person you can watch the sunrise , a very unique experience!
A clean, quiet, serene setting invites you for a morning jog by the ocean side. Or you can simply enjoy a quiet morning on the patio with a complementary cup of ( 100%!) Kona coffee and banana bread along with a ripe papaya from Gary's garden.
The suite is clean and tastefully decorated even down to the smallest detail. We were pleasantly surprised by the incredibly soft bed and very bright bathroom which included high ceilings, widows and..soft towels
Gary, the owner lives next door but you wouldn't even know he was there, however if you need any information about the island he is more than willing to help.
Thank you Gary. We enjoyed our stay very much.
