Castle House began as a medieval castle in the heart of rural Ireland. Nestled in the shadow of the famous Devil's Bit mountain, it is full of original works of art. It provides the perfect Self Catering 3/4 bed retreat for 2 to 8 guests.
Castle House offers unique self-catering accommodation for those wishing to immerse themselves in Irish rural life. Situated in the picturesque village of Killea in North Tipperary, the house nestles in the shadows of the Devil's Bit Mountain and is steeped in history, culture and art.
The owner, Don Maher, is an Irish-American artist, who now lives in the United States. Castle House is full of his original works of art, charting six decades of his career as an artist, and including works inspired by themes of religion, identity, family and place.
This spacious four-bedroom hideaway began life as a late medieval castle. Some features of the castle are in place to this day, while others were recycled over the generations and blended with new elements to become the Castle House we see today.
This lovely home is tastefully furnished, full of intriguing art (with its very own art gallery!) and crowned with the impressive tower offering panoramic views of the Irish Midlands.
Castle House is available to rent all year round, minimum stay 3 nights
Guests have access to the entire house, including the beautiful garden and the adjoining yards, which have plenty of space in which to park visitors' cars. --- If there are more than 6 Guests we can arrange to have access to the adjoining apartment at a negotiated price.
Interaction with Guests
Guests to Castle House are personally welcomed by me, Denise Meagher (I look after the property on behalf of the owner).
I am a native of the local area, and can provide lots of advice on things to do and see, as well as guiding visitors through the house, pointing out its unique historical features and explaining the origins of and inspiration for the many works of art.
One of my special touches is to bake a fresh loaf of traditional Irish soda bread for all guests; that's something that always goes down well when hungry visitors arrive!
Beyond its peaceful gardens, Castle House is surrounded by lush countryside, offering visitors ample opportunities for hiking, golf, fishing and other leisure activities.
The village of Killea, meanwhile, allows you to really experience Irish rural life. With its charming pub, church and school, it has a rich heritage encompassing traditional Irish music, Gaelic games, folklore and a strong community spirit.
We're located within 90 minutes' drive from Shannon, Dublin and Cork airports, and well-served by bus and rail links to Templemore, Roscrea and Thurles.
Other Things to Note
We charge €100 per night throughout the year.
Minimum stay 2 nights
For safety/insurance reasons we have to restrict access to the Tower to Adults and only allow children under 5 as guests by special arrangement.
There are security cameras to monitor the Art. Obviously we expect all guests to take care not to harm any art pieces in the house and gardens
Stay here and you could give this host their first review!
I am married to Seosamh, and we have three young sons: Don, Joss and Étienne. I am a native of Co. Tipperary. I grew up in Killough, a few miles outside the town of Templemore. I have a huge interest in arts and culture, and love meeting new people and telling them about the wonderful area in which we live.
