Maria Agusta "Magu" from the moment we arrived for our 17 days at her home--she accompanied the taxi to the airport to pick us up--was friendly and helpful. Her English is substantially better than our Spanish and she was ready and willing to help us explore her beautiful city and surrounding area. The home, in the west end of the old city, a short block from the Tomebamba river and it's pleasant walkway to the center of town, is well kept, equipped, and spotless at all times. Highly recommended!
I was a bit apprehensive about traveling to Ecuador as I hadn't traveled internationally since the 80's and never before to South America. Any fears I might have had were instantly eradicated with the warm hug given me by Maria Augusta Arcos (Magu) at the Cuenca Airport. From Day 1 she took care of all requests and all needs, often sacrificing her own time and privacy in order to accommodate and support her guests.
Those of us staying at her home labeled her "The Hostess With the Mostest" because she did so much to make our visit to Cuenca easy, comfortable and fun. She took us to lunch the first day and then to SuperMaxi so we could buy food to cook. She took one guest to the dentist on more than one occasion and took me to meet friends at a place unknown to me. She also met me at the airport and took me back for departure.
I would say the accommodations are modest and comfortable, the place is totally organized and clean, and the other guests were interesting and fun to get to know.
The one thing that would make my room more comfortable would be a large mirror and a bit more light -- perhaps from a larger lamp -- so you could read.
There are dogs frequently at the house and some barking, but I found the animals to be very loving and friendly so they didn't bother me; in fact they added to my enjoyment as I don't have pets of my own.
Location, location, location! It was a bit hard to find, but Magu helped talk us there and was perfect and easy to walk to everything. It had a park out front which was great for my young kids but was a bit loud at night. Her dogs are adorable, but barked quite a bit and scared my kids for the first few days...just FYI. Overall great time and would recommend though.
spent two thoroughly enjoyable weeks at Maria Augusta's here in Cuenca. The location is excellent. It's on a quiet cul-de-sac a few minutes from El Centro in a fine neighborhood. Maria met me at the airport in Cuenca and greatly eased the challenge of getting settled. She speaks English and made herself available for questions, translating and assistance with just about everything. The bed was especially comfortable and the shared kitchen has everything you might need to prepare a snack or complete meal. The living room is very well laid out and is open to guests. I felt truly welcome in her home. I also enjoyed the company of her two little dogs. They are thrilled to meet new arrivals and if you warm to them they'll greet you whenever they see you, with enthusiasm and affection. Thank you Maria Augusta.
I very much enjoyed my stay (9 days) at Maria's house. House is well-located in a quiet neighborhood near the river and within easy walking distance (15 minutes) of the city's center. I found the house to be very clean, and the kitchen large orderly and absolutely spotless. Magu (Maria), a native of Cuenca, is a delightful host who made me feel welcomed. She even met me at the airport the evening I arrived, and the next day gave me a walking tour of Cuenca's historic central area, pointing out important buildings, markets, and restaurants, and generally sharing other things I needed to know in order to get oriented. Our walk ended at a supermarket (a "SuperMaxi") where I was able to buy the food I needed for my stay. I love dogs, so Sama and Choow were fun to have around. Both are very friendly. Wish I could have brought one or the other home with me! Overall, I am happy to recommend Magu's house to other travellers. I had a good experience and would definitely stay there again.
Maria was the perfect host, on arrival she took us on a tour of the central City to get us orientated, pointing out places of interest and the best places to eat and drink. The house is perfectly located an easy 10 minute walk to the Centro Plaza , river walks .
The neighbourhood friendly and safe.
Everything was beautifully clean and comfortable.
Maria always happy to help with any questions, directions, organising taxis etc.
We enjoyed it very much and highly recommend.
This home has almost everything that I could want. Maria is very friendly and good at making a person feel at home. She was extremely helpful whenever I needed help and gave me a lift from the airport followed by a neighborhood orientation walk.
The home is interesting with many walls of stone. The kitchen is easy to utilize. Most of all the bed was very comfortable. There is a good space in which one can hand wash clothing.
It is a good location for a tourist - just a few blocks from the historical centre.
She has 2 very gentle and fun little dogs. They will adopt you quickly if allowed.
My room was not dark at night due to playground lights, but I believe that this is unique to that room.
