This is a great place to stay away from the crowds, yet near enough to reach Lake Tahoe, Carson City and vicinity. Maybe even a daytrip to Yosemite is possible - I did not try as it was raining. I enjoy the quiet of the countryside in the evening, listening to wildlife. There should be much opportunity to go hiking in the mountains surrounding the valley, yet I did not try this time.
The hosts are really wonderful and make you feel at home and provide information. They even agreed to refund one night due to bad weather and let me travel on earlier. You can allways reach them and they reply very fast to any question you may have.
The barn has everything you might need for short or long stay. Kitchen is equipped with all necessary equipment. Just don't forget to bring supplies as the next supermarket is in Gardnerville about 20 min away.
The bed is very comfortable. There is a nice collection of books to get ideas for further exploration and travel.
I would definitely recommend staying here and hope to come back another time.
We had an amazing time at the Barn! We booked last minute, but Cathryn and Gary were accommodating and welcoming! Cathryn even called to make sure we could find the place (and we were extremely thankful she did - it was dark and hard for us to see the signs). She guided us to our accommodation and gave us a tour. The place is much bigger than it appears in the pictures - the apartment is fabulous with its decorations and little extras. We could have stayed here all week! Cathryn and Gary gave us ideas on places to go for hikes and restaurants (although we thoroughly enjoyed using the appliances and cooking our own meals). They have everything - fantastic views, good recommendations, quiet, all the amenities you need, and a peaceful place to relax and rejuvenate. We highly recommend this beautiful place!! We cannot wait to go back (the fall colors will be nice!) You will love this place!
We had a lovely stay in Smith Valley. The apartment was even more beautiful than the pictures and there are mountain views from every window. Cathryn and Gary were wonderful hosts. Whenever we had a question they answered promptly. She left us goodies for breaksfast, including coffee, tea, bagels and cream. It was cold while we were there, but the unit was cozy and comfortable. The star-gazing at night was amazing. They have the most comfortable bed ever! If you plan to cook, get your provisions before you go to the house, town is about 30 minutes away. If you want to get away, this place is highly recommended.
I have stayed at Cathryn's wonderful place in the Smith Valley twice now and hope to return many more times.
With views of the mountains from every window, this light-filled apartment is perfect for a base to explore the surrounding areas.
Hiking, hot springs, motorcycle rides through the high desert are
just a few of the activities available.
The hosts are extremely thoughtful and had breakfast goodies, coffee and fruit for us.
They live on the property and are extremely respectful of your privacy.

Wonderful!! Cathryn and Gary were delightful hosts, and the apartment was cozy, extremely comfortable, and with 360-degree views like nothing else we've seen. We will be back.
Escapee from the maddening crowds and smoggy air of Southern California to the serene peace and quiet and clean clear air of the Eastern High Sierras.
