"Cathy is a WONDERFUL hostess and a DELICIOUS person! She was overwhelmingly welcome, left us our special eggs from "the girls," helped us make arrangements for a zip line tour and a Biltmore visit, provided us with lots of Asheville reading materials and gave us a wonderful tour of our precious little home for the week. The bed is comfortable, sheets clean and cozy, space heaters available should you get cold, and hot water for your shower or bath in the sweet claw foot tub. She is quick to respond to texts and available whenever you need her. It was the perfect getaway from our NYC living and Cathy did all but convince us to move there! I highly recommend staying with her in any of her 3 charming apartments!" ~ Emilie, Manhattan

Experience Asheville's premiere Montford Historic District in a completely private, quiet, spacious guest apartment. I have THREE AIRBNB APARTMENTS located in a beautiful two story, owner-occupied home. This location can't be beat; each is close to town but QUIET without the street noise. This apartment is on the ground floor on the right hand side of the house. The 3,000 sq. ft. home is on a quiet side street and offers off-street parking and a SAFE and FRIENDLY neighborhood. On site eco-considerations: organically raised CHICKENS (no roosters=no early morning noise), rain barrels for water cachement, organic vegetable gardens, composting, and vermiculture. Worms eat my garbage and provide me with their nutrient rich castings for the garden. Enjoy the lovely back yard gardens in the hammock under the shade trees or resting in the sun. Be entertained by my six goofy chickens.

"Cathy's apartments in her home are a great and affordable way to stay in Asheville. They're located just north of downtown Asheville and are within an easy drive to many surrounding sites and attractions. Our apartment was exactly as advertised including fresh eggs upon our arrival which were some of the best eggs I've ever had. Cathy is very quick to respond to questions and needs and had spot-on recommendations for restaurants, cafes and the like. I highly recommend Cathy and this listing." Hiram, New York City

"Cathy was a stellar host and the room was perfect for what we needed. It was a wonderful blend of privacy, space, proximity to downtown and helpful tips from Cathy of where to go and what to do based on our interests. We look forward to our next stay! This is the best place we've stayed in our numerous trips to Asheville." ~ Jon

As a special treat, The Girls provide complimentary fresh eggs for your enjoyment. If you've never had a real egg from an organically fed chicken, it's something special.Your kitchen is FULLY STOCKED with pots/pans/cooking utensils, wine glasses, toaster, coffee bean grinder, blender. It has a SUNNY LARGE KITCHEN with dining table and chairs and a full size refrigerator and full size gas stove/oven. The bath has a newly resurfaced deep porcelain tub and shower with plenty of hot water and EXCELLENT WATER PRESSURE. Fluffy wash cloths, hand towels and towels are provided. Little extras like shampoo, conditioner and bath salts also! The QUEEN bed has a new high quality mattress and covered with lots of pillows for propping up and reading in bed. It's draped in HIGH THREAD COUNT QUALITY LINENS.

"Now I am totally spoiled. No more Asheville motels for me as long as Cathy has such lovely and spotless accommodations. Charming host and home." Gail, Auburn, Alabama,

Come see for yourself why Asheville has been called "THE PARIS OF THE SOUTH" and Trip Advisor lists Asheville on the Top 10 Destinations for Food and Wine. I am a former professional chef and baking instructor (pastry chef at The Biltmore Estate) and so recommending great food is my passion. After booking, guests receive a list of all my favorite places to eat, to see and fun things to do!

"I can hardly wait to get back to Asheville and stay with Cathy again in her great location in historic Montford. I felt very much at home in the spacious, attractive apartment with windows all around, including the one overlooking her beautiful garden area and hen house. The fresh eggs were delicious in the morning, too. I found Cathy very warm and attentive to the big and little things that made the stay memorable. Thank you, Cathy, for making me feel so welcome and comfortable!" ~ Scottie, Raleigh, NC

Guest Access

There are beautiful mature trees and shrubs on the property: tall hemlocks, a large Japanese maple, white pine, rose of sharon, walnut, serviceberry, native shrubs like laurel, rhododendron, native fern, hydrangea as well as over 500 flowering spring bulbs. The LARGE BACK YARD has organic raised beds for veggies, herbs and flowers which I share with guests. You can relax and enjoy a book or afternoon nap in the back yard hammock. Play bocci ball or croquet or just watch the goofy antics of my nine chickens:
Audrey Hepburn (feathered white hat)
Amelia Eggheart
Rachel Carson
Jane Goodall-lays green eggs
Sally Ride-lays dark brown speckled eggs
Sister Teresa (all white)
Michelle Obama (black bangs)
Pecky Williams-lays blue eggs
Ellen Deheneres-lays copper colored eggs

Interaction with Guests

As I live in the downstairs apartment on the left I'm around when needed or only a text away. If I'm traveling, I will always have someone living on the premises who can assist you. I make a special effort to not be intrusive but close in touch if something is needed. You might see me working in the garden or tending to The Girls. There are time times even though I'm here we won't necessarily run into each other...just the way the apartments are situated. I will check in periodically but won't intrude on your privacy. For those looking to possibly move to Asheville, I have 26 years of experience living in Asheville and would be happy to give you a guided tour of my favorite neighborhoods or provide a list of recommended builders and/or real estate agents. I don't receive kickbacks from any of these folks...I recommend them because they are professional and good at what they do.

The Neighborhood

Arriving late and want an easy dinner? Perhaps you'll walk to one of our two neighborhood pubs, Tod's Tasties, four blocks or Nine Mile Cafe, which is just two blocks from your apartment.

Within walking distance from your apartment: The Botanical Gardens of Asheville, the University of North Carolina campus, downtown is a mile-20 minute walk or 5 minute car ride. Montford Park is half a block away and has a basketball court, tennis courts and park benches. Riverside Cemetery is one of the coolest places to view Civil War and Spanish American War grave sites. The Biltmore Estate and Village is approximately 3 miles away. Everything is easy access.

Getting around

Enjoy a lovely walk to town through wide boulevards of the historic district with turn of the century mansions on both sides of the street. Drive five minutes to town and park in any one of several parking decks-1st hour is always free! Many of my guests who want to enjoy the benefits of Asheville being called "Beer City USA" three times opt to walk to downtown and take a $10 taxi ride home.

Other Things to Note

Because I place a value on vacation tranquility and the apartments weren't decorated with "child-proofing" in mind, they are not well suited for children under the age of fourteen.

  • Her place looked just like the picture. Clean, quaint and beautiful! My friend and I came for a girl's trip to Asheville and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The beds were comfy (I slept on the futon with a mattress topper and was very comfortable) and my friend slept in the bed. We enjoyed fresh eggs from her adorable backyard chickens for breakfast each morning and had a great view of the backyard where we could watch them roam. We felt like we were staying with friends or family. Cathy made us feel very much at home!

  • Cathy's accomodations and the location were good, unfortunatly our overall experience with Cathy was not.

Cathy promised us she would be there to greet us (around 7:30 pm) and instead when we arrived the house was dark and it was a bit of a challenge and diappointment, to say the least. Admittedly she was very apologetic on the phone and assisted as best she could.

Fresh eggs were promised every day and only arrived on the third day, once again with apologies and we had a "situation" on checkout that required mediating.

My companion and I had dinner, with friends in their mountain home and little did we know or expect that we would be without cell phone service. Our hosts invited us to stay the night and when we were finally able to talk via cell phone, the following morening, we were about 20 minutes past the "official" check out time and about an hour away from Cathy's apartment. Cathy was very upset and not knowing what her late check out policy was, I volunteered to pay for one additional day, to try and apease he. I realy didn't expect her to charge us for the day and unfortunately she did. Once I read her policy and learned that she would extend check out times by two hours and since we were out of the apartment within the two hour extension time, I protested the additional days charge.

I think Cathy was being way too aggresive in trying to collect another days fees becuase of a situation that we had not anticipated. If our actions were malicious it would believe differently.

I have travelled to many parts of the world, using and Airbnb and I have been a host as well. Not once previously have I ever been involved in a situation that reqiored mediating.

    Response from Cathy:

My experience with Jacob unfortunately wasn't good. He had expectations outside the realm of what I felt comfortable with.

Jake/Jacob and Marilyn chose to create an unpleasant situation that required a mediation guided by airbnb senior staff. Fortunately, my excellent record and good standing after hosting well over 100+ guests was upheld and recognized by airbnb. They ruled in my favor.

My interest is in creating harmony not conflict! I've worked with people all my life and folks like Jake have similar characteristics. They have exaggerated ideas of their own worth and abilities, have an unrealistic sense of personal entitlement (after three days he requested another full set of sheets and towels with no explanation or response when I asked why), they are quick to feel discounted and disrespected (victims)--he complained about not receiving MY GIFT of fresh eggs until midway into his stay)), they often rank their needs and opinions above other peoples' (he chose to not communicate about checking out two hours late-not only inconveniencing me but also my cleaning person who arrived by bus and was unable to do her job for two full hours), they may assume they know how you feel and think, and what you need (he assumed there was no need to ask in advance if he could delay his departure two hours); they have little genuine empathy or interest in others' welfare (didn't even say "I'm sorry"), and frequently focus on themselves in conversation. Jake, I wish to let this be our last communication. Thank you for respecting my request.

  • Cathy deserves all the five-star reviews she's already received. Her place is cozy and well decorated, and it's in one of the prettiest neighborhoods in Asheville. Just do a (website hidden) Street view of Montford Park.

Cathy herself was extremely warm and hospitable. She's exactly what you'd want from an Airbnb hostess. I plan to stay here whenever I return for a weekend in Asheville.

  • Great time in Asheville! The food was easily our favorite part of the trip - in an epicurean town like this one, you know you can walk in just about anywhere and get an amazing meal, and it certainly didn't disappoint.

My wife also completely lost it over the antique shops in Asheville, We are from Summerland, CA, which is considered by some to be the antique capital of the country, but Asheville blew it away with places like the Antique Tobacco Barn. They are on every corner and provide endless entertainment.

Cathy was an outstanding hostess! Considerate, friendly, and very knowledgeable about the area. The apartment was amazing, an old house decorated with care and super clean. The chickens are also a total riot and completely quiet.

  • The weekend stay was spectacular and the location was perfect for the reasons I was in Asheville. With all the BnB's in the area, I was happy for choosing this one because the amenities and conveniences met my needs. My future visits will include a repeat stay at Cathy's place because all my expectations were met.

  • As usual - a home away from home.

  • Lovely, quiet, and comfortable lodgings close to all that Asheville has to offer. Cathy is warm and inviting, and gave us great advice about local restaurants and other destinations. The back yard provides a charming and relaxing space to take a break from your travels, and the "girls" (chickens) are fun to watch. The eggs are delicious too! The apartment and the kitchen have all that you may need. We would definitely stay here again. Thanks Cathy!

  • Quiet, close and convenient to town, spacious, light-filled with charm, good kitchen, clean, great table I could use as a desk...just what I wanted in a place to stay. The house is in a neighborhood filled with houses like this. An occasional mansion now serving as a B&B but no apartment complexes or busy streets. Cathy is a gracious host who wants you to be comfortable. Little things like an umbrella and plug adapters in the apt. told me she pays attention to details. And when I told her I liked to read, she left an additional portable reading lamp for me. I had a good stay.

  • Cathy is a wonderful host and the apartment is lovely, airy and spacious -- great neighborhood, very convenient. And the eggs are delicious ;) It was such a pleasure to stay there!

About
I have travel in my blood. I was born in Chateauroux, France. My sister was born in Germany and I learned to speak German when my family lived there for four years. Some of my favorites places include, Lagos de Atitlan, Uxmal, Merida, San Cristobal, Antigua, Ambergris Caye, Chichicastengo, Amsterdam, Vancouver, Cologne, Berlin and Prague. I prefer to travel off the "gringo trail" and have many more places to visit. I'll be in Denmark and Sweden in April. If you have family living abroad I am open to a reciprocal home share trade! You and they come here and I stay in their home. I've done this with folks in Manhattan, Prague and Berlin and it's work out well. Win-win! I am a passionate student of compassionate communication (NVC). Two important things I've learned is that other people's behavior rarely has anything to do with me and that with patience and compassion, most all our needs can be met. For fun around here I have ridden a hot air balloon over our mountains, taken a mountain top zip line tour nearby, seen our ancient mountains during a flying lesson, rented a scooter and rode the blue ridge parkway, took a few archery lessons so I could pretend to be like Katniss from The Hunger Games, which was filmed nearby. I also enjoy sitting in the backyard watching my chickens do goofy things. What do you like to do for fun? Let me share with you more fun things to do in our beautiful mountains.
