Great location

Thunder Ridge at the Forest Retreat is an adults-only pet-friendly getaway. Children may come only during specific times: Easter Spring Break and during the summer. Staying here you are surrounded by the Homochitto National Forest. Take a picnic to the sand bars of the pristine spring-fed creek. Hike or mountain bike on the remote forest roads. Plenty of porch sitting awaits you, too. Please note that the address listed on Airbnb is not our location. I email you exact directions.

The space
Experience starry nights listening to the owls hooting far off in the woods and peaceful days with no phones and no interruptions. What you'll hear are only the sounds of nature and what you'll see is the movement of light as the day passes into night. When it rains it is lovely to hear the raindrops on the tin roof. When it's cold it's time to build a fire and become relaxed, warmed and mesmerized by the flames. For the warmer seasons we have super cold AC.

If you are staying several days the nearest town with restaurants and nightlife is the Mississippi River town of Natchez. It's 50 minutes away by going north on Hwy 33 and taking Liberty Road west into Natchez.

Stock up on good food to eat. We have BBQ grills. Usually there's charcoal but it's wise to bring a sack to be sure.

One last note: We clean the cabins as soon as guests leave and then check them the morning before anyone arrives. That said, if a beetle walks through an unseen crack and is there when you arrive please remember you are coming to a natural place surrounded by a national forest home to wildlife, such as, deer and birds and possums and raccoons and moths and beetles, as an example. Please don't blast me with a negative comment if you see a bug in your house. The cabins are beautiful and nature surrounds them on every side.

Guest access
We have a clear spring-fed creek with fossils and petrified wood. Take home as many fossils and beautiful rocks as you wish. To find the path to the creek go back to the parking area and walk west and you'll see a trail that leads to the pond and over the dam. In the bottomland, the trail bends right, and this short turn takes you to the sandbars and creek. Please don't drop cigarette butts on the land. The animals and I thank you.

Other things to note
I recommend that you bring shoes to walk on the gravel-bottomed creek, or knee high boots. The kind of shoes that work best are hiking sandals (unattractive, I know) but they're effective for walking the creek. They allow the small rocks that flow with the water current (and inevitably get inside your footwear) to easily wash away if you're wearing hiking sandals. Tennis shoes are not ideal. You keep having to take them off if a small rock finds the tender part of the sole of your foot.

You can absolutely go barefoot! Most people do.

You might want to pack small folding chairs. The ones that have a strap that you can sling over your shoulder and take along with some beach towels and a cooler. This gear is recommended for a day on the sandbars at the creek.

During the summertime when hiking or biking off the obvious trails spray yourself with Deep Woods OFF.

The Forest Retreat has as its neighbor a national forest. Across the creek is a nurse, but her house is far back and in the woods, too. You can't see it and she never walks down to the boundary of the creek. For twenty-four years I've never seen her there. You may hear her donkeys braying in the distance or her dog bark at dusk when it's dinnertime. Otherwise, you'll only hear the birds and the wind in the trees.

During your stay
We give you directions how to get here and once here you're on your own. Completely. The address we listed on this site is where our reservations manager lives. Please don't go there! When you book with us Tina, our reservations manager will send you directions. We are remote. The Forest Retreat is at the end of a forest service road and there is no actual address. GPS doesn't work to get you here either. It sends people to a dead end road about a mile away. Please don't try to GPS your travel. No one is here at The Forest Retreat but you and possibly another guest. The other guest house is not near yours. Your cabin is completely private.
