This charming 16ft yurt sits on its own in a private pine and oak forest on our farm property. Offering quiet privacy, it is a truly rustic experience best suited to those who already have a comfort level with campground-type facilities: warm in summer, wood-heated in winter. A bathroom building is 150 ft away, with a shower house just beyond. COVID: Please note that the toilet room is shared with one of our residents and the shower with two. There is disinfectant spray in both areas.

The space
The yurt is a perfect place to relax and recharge in the country or to use as a base camp for your all-season adventures in the Sierra Nevada foothills. It's a well-placed access point to river country, hiking, biking, and South Lake Tahoe resorts. Guests are also invited to learn more about the on-site organic veggie and flower farm, and even participate if they want!

Our yurt is located in one of the more private parts of our farm. Formerly a small campground, guests have access to a separate bathroom (toilet/sink) about 150 feet away as well as a shower house a bit beyond the bathroom. The shower house is roofed and partially enclosed but fully private, and has all the hot water you'll need. Towels, soap and shampoo/conditioner are provided.

The yurt has two large windows that look out onto the forest. Inside you'll find a full-sized bed with comfy bedding, a dresser, bedside lamps, seating, and a wood stove. In summer the yurt can be warm during the day, but cools to ambient temperature at night. Summer highs average 85-95 degrees, with night time lows in the 60's and 70's. In cooler months, firewood, kindling, and lighting paper are all provided. The stove will be all ready to light on arrival and we are happy to help with the fire in any way. We'll count on you to add wood and to decide when you're warm enough on cold nights!

Because we wish to preserve the quiet and natural atmosphere of the forest, guests are asked to drive only as far as the bathroom on arrival for unloading. A handy wheeled cart is provided for the last stretch on foot down a well marked path. After unloading, guest vehicles are parked near the shower house allowing easy coming and going with no extra gates to navigate.

We provide an electric tea kettle, pour through coffee vessel with gold filter, coffee cups and a couple of spoons. Please bring your own little camp kitchen if you plan to make meals at the yurt, but please be very fire safe. No stove in the yurt. Only on the provided picnic table, please. Although there is a washing area for dishes at the bathroom facility, there is no faucet in the yurt, but we do provide a 2.5 gallon jug for drinking water inside the yurt.

Wildlife abounds! Guests often hear coyotes, owls, and birds. Deer, squirrels, and hawks are frequent visitors as well. The yurt overlooks our pond (swimming limited to our residents only) and includes deck seating, a hammock, and a picnic table.

Guest access
Set on a working organic vegetable farm, this private getaway is a wonderful retreat from the city, just 2.5 hours from San Francisco and 50 min from Sacramento. Historic downtown Colfax (served daily by Amtrak's California Zephyr train and regular buses) is just minutes away by car or foot, and the cultural riches of both Grass Valley and Nevada City are just 25 minutes down the road.

Rivers, mountains, hiking trails, and ski resorts are all located nearby and we're happy to make recommendations (or see our linked PDF with recommendations in the guest manual or in our welcome email)!

Our 50 acre property is open to guests and includes rough walking trails and a treehouse, but our pond is private to our living community only. You are welcome to walk around the pond if it is not in use. We know it's probably a tease, but hopefully you'll be able to get to the river for your swim!

Other things to note
The yurt is accessed via a small staircase. The walk to the bathroom, the shower house and the main grounds of the farm includes some rough and/or sloping ground.

Please note also that our shower house offers privacy, but is partially open air (gap between ceiling and walls), therefore during cooler months it may help to have a fluffy robe for walking to and from the yurt. During the dry months, you may have froggy and lizard visitors! They are only coming in to find water and they DO keep the mosquito populations down! I think they are fun to watch! You will be sharing the toilet room with one resident and shower with two. There will be disinfectant spray in both.

To reiterate: You are welcome to use your own campstove and dishes for cooking if you like. Any heat source must include an on-off switch and be used on the yurt deck or picnic table. No fires and no indoor cooking are allowed. The bathroom includes an outdoor sink suitable for washing your own dishes.

Location

Colfax, California, United States

Colfax is a charming railroad/gold rush town just off of highway 80. It has a full sized grocery store and a Starbuck's, but also boasts good eating spots and antique stores.

Wood-fired pizza is definitely worth the stop at Il Pizzaiolo. For more traditional American food, try Dine 'n' Dash.

Hiking and swimming at the American river is just a short drive down into the canyon, and the majestic Yuba river is only 45 min from here. We can help direct you to our favorite hiking trails and other cool sites in the area. or go to this link for more ides: https://docs.google.com/document/d/14PTxW1d_vMxtnKQMnqYkRlzxXqog3vZ-HzusackmlNI/edit
