The Space

In about 16 km. from the city of Chania-Crete, there is a fully equiped appartment (A/C, TV, Wi-Fi, central heating),available all year, with 1 bedroom, bathroom and kitchen with sitting room with sofa-bed for an extra person. It has a wonderfull view to the "white mountains"(Omalos) and is only 7 km from the beach Platanias and Stalos. The beach of Platanias is a large sandy (website hidden) is organised all along its length, with sun loungers and umbrellas.Stalos beach is also a very long and sandy beach with a tourist-aimed waterfront. In fact, Stalos beach extends for so long that if you prefer some tranquility, there are areas that don't get so crowded. If you want to explore the whole island i would recommend to rent a car.The apartment is located in a very quiet area so if you need a quite place close to nature in a friendly enviroment we are sure you 'll come to the right place!!!If you have any questions do not hesitate to contact me.

  • Dear Sofia and Theo,

thanks for your wonderful hospitality; we really appreciated the welcome with fruits and all the nice special products. The house was very clean and equipped with everything we could need; we loved the quiet location. The city and the coast are about 20 minutes away, and with a car it is a perfect base to explore the beautiful western coast of the island.

We had a great experience and we highly recommend the apartment and the hosts :)

  • For our first week in Crete, we had stayed in the bustling town centers of Chania and Rethymno. That was very nice, but for our last few days we wanted a more bucolic, road-less-travelled experience. Sofia Maraka's charming place at Hawk Hill outside the tiny village of Koufos fit the bill perfectly. Up a winding drive through well-tended orange, lemon and olive groves (led by Sofia's genial husband, Teo, on a motorcycle), we were brought to a handsome contemporary home with commanding views of the valley and mountains.

The downstairs apartment where we stayed is well appointed, with a well detailed kitchen and bath. A bed with sound queen mattress as well as a very comfy sofa bed for our 12 year old yielded good sleep for us all. A big basket of ripe local fruits greeted us (maybe the juiciest oranges I've ever tasted) as well as a heap of eggs fresh from the neighbors' hens, plus house-grown olive oil, and jars of excellent home made preserves. Fresh milk and yoghurt were in the fridge. Yum! Name me a five star hotel that would make one feel any more welcome.

To our pleasure, we got to know Sofia herself a bit in relaxed evening conversation that ranged from the arts to environmentalism to the ongoing, real-life effects of the Greek economic crisis. Conclusion: she's a gifted artist, a lovely soul, and we most heartily can recommend her accommodations.

  • Hosts were extremely responsive and met us at village to direct us up to property. They were very gracious hosts. The property was adorable, very clean and fully stocked, and came with homemade olive oil, honey, jam, fruit, tea etc. Sofia helped us figure out hiking in one of the gorges and was very knowledgeable about the area. The view is incredible and we would highly recommend this place to anybody interested in spending some peaceful time in the mountains.

  • We have just returned from 2 wonderful weeks in Crete, staying in Sofia and Theo’s apartment.

First and foremost, we were struck by the warmth of Sofia and Theo’s friendship and hospitality.

Plus, the accommodation was set in the most peaceful and relaxing location with wonderful views across the valley to the ‘White Mountains’ of Omalos, which we enjoyed every morning whilst breakfasting on the patio in the beautiful warm sunshine.

The fridge was kept well-stocked for breakfast – we made fresh orange juice every morning using the local oranges and had delicious homemade jams made by Sofia’s amazing father, plus there was their delicious local thyme honey and local eggs.

The apartment was very clean and comfortable and was a superb base from which to explore both the coast and mountain regions. Cycling was a wonderful way to take in the surroundings – strenuous at times but great downhill sections too!

We can recommend a great local tavern, Pemptusia (ΠΕΜΠΤΟΥΣΙΑ), in nearby Alikianos run by Evelina who provided a very warm welcome and fabulous food on more than one occasion!

Quite honestly, 2 weeks was not long enough – we hope to return to Sofia and Theo’s spectacular retreat and first-class hospitality and generosity.

  • This apartment in the hills near Chania is great, especially if you want to do some hiking in the mountains. For us the apartment was perfect, with a wonderful view on the white mountains and plenty of space inside and outside to relax and enjoy our holidays. The fact that we could enjoy the fruits and vegetables from the garden felt quite luxurious! The location is also good, about half an hour drive from Chania, but nicely away from the crowds. It’s a perfect ‘basecamp’ for exploring the different gorges in the area and there are plenty of nice little towns and beaches nearby too.
Sofia and Teo are very nice hosts. They were committed to giving us a good time, they were often passing by to ask how our day was and if we needed anything. Their tips for local taverns and daytrips in the area were also very good!
So, this is a perfect apartment for a great holiday on Crete!

  • In our estimation, Sofia and Teo should be designated "Super Hosts" status. You will not meet two people who are more kind and giving. Their mountain-side home is spectaculor with all the amenities and close to rural adventures and the most spectaculor gorge that rivals all!
Our apartment was spacious, exceptionally clean and stocked with so many extras it was above and beyond our expectations. We hated tp leave our superhosts!
We would highly recommend this location to any and all who find themselves in this corner of the world!

  • Our week at Hawkhill cottage was really enjoyable. Sofia and Theo are great hosts: very generous and hospitable. They have a knack of making you feel welcome and cared for without intruding.

They provided us with some essentials when we arrived and some lovely local produce and gave us tips on where to visit. The place was spotlessly clean and there was plenty of bed linen and towels. We enjoyed sitting on the verandah looking out at the view of distant hills in this quiet spot. It all contributed to a relaxed and happy holiday.

The cottage is outside a small village well away from any of the tourist areas. It's a good base for travelling round the west of the island if you hire a car.

  • We had a wonderful start to our trip with our stay with Sofia and Teo. Chania is a very interesting city to visit but staying some distance away helped us settle in and adjust to a more leisurely pace. The apartment is spotless, very modern and was perfect for us. When we arrived they welcomed us with genuine warmth and hospitality. Each day when we returned we were warmly greeted and spent time in their home discussing the day, our plans and life in general. Besides generously providing fresh food for breakfasts they gave us many llittle treats that went above and beyond what we could have ever expected.
We were very fortunate to have stayed with Sofia and Tao. Besides their wonderful accommodation we also felt we made friends. Hopefully we will be able to reciprocate sometime in the future.

The appartment was really clean and tidy, nicely decorated and has amazing views to the valley and the montains. The sorroundings are very quite, so if you are looking for accomodation outside the touristic routes, this is your place!
