Charming duplex apartment, renovated with taste. Easy access, nice & comfortable, sunny with no facing neighbour, ideally located in the heart of the medina. 2/3 bedrooms & 3 living rooms, can accomodate 5/7 persons. Terrace & panoramic medina view.
"Sheherazade" is a very nice master bedroom, with stunning street view, overlooking the famous "Khaima square"
Duplex apartment (2 levels), at the 3rd floor and at an angle, overlooking the Casbah district, close to the skala walls.
Very light and without any facing neighbour, with a large terrace and a stunning panoramic view of the medina.
This area of the medina is safe and lively, and the apartment is pretty quiet with new double-glass windows.
Renovated with excellent taste, using the local traditions, arts and techniques. For example the floor in traditional bejmat bricks, and a superb "zellige" carpet in the lobby, made by a souiri artist. The place is also finely decorated with numerous antique furniture and lamps, procured locally step by step along my stays...
There are 2 bedrooms with double (matrimonial) beds: Sheherazade room is street view with a stunning real antique sculpted cedar door as entrance and including a large dressing, and the Marrakesh room has sculpted tadelakt pink wall and overlooks an inside court. An oriental living room at the upper (terrace) level can be used as a 3rd bedroom (1 single adult bed + 1 smaller sofa possibly for a child). There are also 2 additional mattresses for children (140cm), and a baby foldable bed - so it can accomodate up to 7 persons, including 5 adults maximum.
Double "hammam" style doors open on the bathroom, which is in tadelakt, with a shower. There is a hairdryer. The kitchen is also inspired from local traditional styles, with awesome genuine pink marble from the Atlas... It is equiped with a large fridge, induction plates to cook, a micro-wave/oven, a boiler, a coffeemaker, with all necessary kitchen ware. The whole apartment is fully equipped including bedsheets and towels.
The small fireplace in the main living room can accomodate a warming fire in the winter (firewood provided) - but small mobile heaters are also available in case of need.
You will also find there lots of things to read too, magazines, a selection of books: novels, essays and poetry, photo books and travel guides, and even a few games and stories to read at bedtime for children... There is also a music system with a few CDs, so you can listen to music too...
On the terrace, 2 louge chairs are available (the terrace is waiting for a soon-to-come renovation this winter, but very quiet and with stunning views...)
You shall feel so at home there that you won't want to leave... or shall long for coming back soon...
Very practical and easy access, via Bab Sba or Moulay Hassan square.
Very large staircase, 3rd floor, in a small building entrance that is shared with only one other apartment. One can even leave a baby stroller down in the lobby.
Interaction with Guests
The apartment is independent, so you shall be entirely free during your stay. My friend Christine or her husband will welcome you at arrival, and remain available if you have any question.
At confirmation of your booking, I will also provide you with a small personal guide on Essaouira, with tips and recommendations of excellent addresses, so that your stay is as awesome as possible...
The Cashbah district is the old administrative area in the North-West of the medina. The apartment is on the Laallouj avenue and litterally overlooks the "khaima" square, so it could not be more central and better located!
It is a lively area, with numerous restaurants and stores, all amenities are very close.
As the whole medina is for pedestrians, you should arrive at Bab Sba or Moulay Hassan square, just outside the walls. Then it is only about 3 minutes walk.
Other Things to Note
The skala walls are just at the end of the street, et everything is at arm's length... This place is ideal to enjoy the medina while staying in a quiet place, in a very nice apartment, extremely central but also light and comfortable...
A lovely apartment in an excellent location in the old Medina.
Clean, well equipped and nicely decorated. Our 3 kids really enjoyed the toys, books and drawing things available. For our toddler there was a cot and even a baby bath tub. Thanks a lot!
Christine, the contact person, was lovely and ever so helpful!
We had a wonderful time and hope to be back some day!
Great location and apartment. Host was very helpful and the transfer organised from Marrakesh airport was really convenient and well priced. Would definitely recommend.
Virginie's apartment is really a gem, nice as the pictures and with a great atmosphere of "home" . It 'a place very friendly, there are books and games for fun, our daughter adored them !!
Christine, Virginie's contact in Essaouira, is very friendly and helpful, she pick us up, showed us the apartment and booked for us a taxi for airport transfer.
Essaouira is a beautiful place and Virginie's advices were very useful.
We hope to return soon!
We had a fantastic stay in Virginie's apartment over the Christmas period - highly recommended. It was comfortable, clean and in an excellent location. Thank you - we didn't want to go home! Thank you also to Christine and Abdou who made us feel very welcome in Essaouira, meeting us off the bus and giving advice on restaurants etc. It was a great week and we would love to return.
We spent three weeks at Dar Sheherazade in Essaouira with our little baby-boy and totally enjoyed it . Virginie and Marc created the apartment as beautiful as you can imagine, with vivid colors, nice materials, tasty furniture, beautiful art and a cool roof terrace. Essaouira is a nice hang-out city with a wide variaty of food, restaurants and shopping possibilities – buying food at the souks and cooking baby- food and couscous at home was great. Eric started surfing, Julia did some yoga on the roof and enjoyed the great graphic novel collection at Dar Sheherazade and at Institut Francais, both played Yenga, listened to groovy music at the apartment, walked barefoot at the seaside, bought finally quite a lot of souvenirs (including, indeed, a Kaftan and Babouches), ate yummy breakfast, lunch, dinner in various cafes and restaurants in the medina and at the beach, drank barrels of mint tea and fresh orange juices... we really had a wonderful time. The guide from Virginie is super helpful, too.
Last but not least: Virginie is very helpful and nice and answering to all your request immediately, and we found Christine and Abdou, friends of Virginie and Marc, wonderful people, helpful, warm-hearted, interesting to talk to, fluent in English, French and even German, and they help you taking care of your concerns (they warn you for instance, if a storm is coming up and you might not be able to leave town as planned) ... you will enjoy meeting them. For people with kids: you can safely travel with kids, the apartment is well equipped for kids and people in Essaouira are extremely sweet with kids.
Thanks a lot, we definitely will come back. Eric and Julia
French citizen of the world, global traveller both for work and for pleasure. After several years in California, I spent 6 years on humanitarian missions in many different countries. It is during that time that I fell in love with Essaouira, which was the best place to rest in-between field missions... I am now settled back in Europe, and try to come enjoy the Moroccan sun with my family as often as I can, but it is never long enough! I renovated and decorated this apartment as my little dream oriental palace, from the 1001 arabian nights... I love medieval history, traditional arts and cultures, travel literature... and graphic novels. I cherish every place on Earth which is at cross-roads, where different cultures have met and keep meeting, where they came to discover and appreciate each other, where they can even mix up and take the best in each other, places of mutual respect, tolerance and peace, which can even sometimes create something new and exciting... Essaouira is definitely one of those magical places, born and wealthy from so many influences... It is so inspiring!
