Interaction with Guests

We like to meet and greet our guests and then provide them with a private experience. Unless we're needed, we may not see you your entire trip after checking in. Sometimes we bump into our guests outside and it's always great to say hello and see how things are going or answer questions about the neighborhood. We consider the suite entirely yours while you're staying with us. Because we don't hover, we ask that if there is ANYTHING that you need, please let us know. A light bulb that needs replacing? Need more towels? Just ask.

When it's time to check-out, just leave your keys in the room and make sure the door locks behind you--it's that easy!

The Neighborhood

Our fully-contained suite is located in the thriving Inner Sunset district, a safe residential neighborhood and one of San Francisco's most exciting destinations. There are many options for dining and just about every type of world cuisine is found in the excellent neighborhood restaurants.

The area is brimming with cafes, sports bars, retail shops, a post office, hardware store, drug store, laundromats, bakeries, a grocery market, and banks all within a five minute walk from the suite. There's a bustling Farmer's Market with organic produce and fresh artisan goods every Sunday.

To find out more about our favorite places, look for the gold icon at the top right corner of this page which leads you to our personal guidebook.

The suite is an 8-minute walk to the University of California (UCSF) campus and medical center, convenient for anyone associated with the university or in need of a place to stay close to the hospital.

It's a 12-minute walk or 5-minute bus ride to the world-class Golden Gate Park museums. The M.H. de Young Museum features major art exhibits and free music concerts. The California Academy of Sciences offers educational entertainment for all ages including a planetarium, aquarium and indoor rain forest. The surrounding beauty of Golden Gate Park beckons for a picnic or enjoyment of the many attractions such as the Botanical Gardens, Rose Garden, and Stow Lake where you can rent canoes and paddle boats.

Getting around

Parking:
The area is best enjoyed without a car. The immediate street has a two-hour parking limit for non-residents from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Street cleaning is from 8 a.m. - 10 a.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of the month. Please pay close attention to all street signs and meters when parking anywhere in San Francisco, you could get a costly ticket if you are just one minute past the legal time. There is no time-limit on street parking two blocks uphill so that is an option if you have a car, however street cleaning regulations still apply. If you need to rent a car by the day or by the hour, there is a zipcar location as well as a few citycarshare locations within three blocks of the suite. Note: If you plan to use zipcar or citycarshare you must register before your arrival so that you can get your card key by mail.

The neighborhood has streetcar and bus stops to anywhere in the city within a 3-4 minute walk. Our streetcar is the "N-Judah" metro train which will take you directly to the following areas. (Approximate times):

-Haight-Ashbury district, 10 minutes
-Union Square/Moscone Center, 18 minutes
-Financial district, 20 minutes
-AT&T Ballpark, home of the San Francisco Giants, 25 minutes
-Caltrain station, 25 minutes
-Ocean Beach, 18 minutes
-San Francisco Zoo, 20 minutes, accessible by "L" train at nearby Forest Hills station
-Castro district, 15 minutes, accessible by "K,L,M" trains at nearby Forest Hills station
-Glen Park BART station, 8-10 minutes by Muni bus 44

The following Muni transit lines serve the area: 6, 43, 44, N-Judah.

Go to 511-dot-org for trip planning information.

Other Things to Note

-Our street is on a hill, not very steep but you will have to walk uphill for two blocks when returning from the neighborhood attractions.
-The entrance to the suite is through a very narrow private alley which is only 24 inches wide. Once at the door the area widens but walking through the alley alongside our house might feel a bit like threading a needle. Oversized items will have to be brought in through our garage by arrangement. The alley will accommodate average luggage sizes.
-The sofabed is not as comfortable as the main bed. It's best for children or adults flexible with comfort needs. Sleeping on the actual sofa instead of the pullout bed is also an option.
-No dishwasher
-No in-sink garbage disposal. (Food scraps go in the compost pail.)
-No bathtub
-Three steps up to kitchen level, one step up to bathroom level
-Separate heaters in all three rooms (bedroom, kitchen, bathroom)

Long Stay:
-The suite will be professionally cleaned every two weeks at additional $65 per cleaning.

Tips for booking our suite:
-Our calendar is always correct. Your preferred dates are available if the system allows you to inquire about them.
-We only consider requests from people who have a complete profile, so in the spirit of Airbnb, please upload your photo and write a bio that gives us information about yourself. Photos of flowers or other things are not helpful in recognizing you when you come looking for our home. Thank you.
-Please click the "Book it" button on the right side of the page for it to be a confirmed reservation.
-Inquiry emails are not bookings and someone else might beat you to the reservation even though you have inquired.
-Please be accurate about the number of people who will stay in the suite so that the pricing is correct.
-If you are not the person who will be staying, we cannot accept your reservation. The only exception is for adult children booking for their parents, or parents booking for their adult children.

Weather:
San Francisco is a city of micro-climates and it can be very cold, even in the summer months. Because we are only 8-10 minutes from the beach, our area is known for being foggy but we have our share of sunny days as well. Always bring a warm jacket, long pants and dress in light layers as the climate can change dramatically on one streetcar ride.

The following services can be arranged for an additional fee:
-Grocery shopping
-City tour
-Continental breakfast
-Gift shopping
-Flowers

  • For my wife and I, this was our first stay in San Francisco, a whole week of discovery. We were out, walking the various districts all day and happy to come back to Syl and Art's place, feeling that theirs was our cozy home. The apartment is comfortable, well kept, safe and quiet. Sylvia and Arturo are great guests, and persons to discover. Their insights and suggestions brought a bonus to our experience.
The location of the apartment is near perfection. Out of the center buzz, yet close enough to make daily transportation easy. There are enough restaurants and foodstores around to accomodate the stay.

  • Sylvia and Arturo are great hosts! It was a pleasure meeting them and receiving good advice from them about how to best explore the neighborhood and the city. Lots of valuable information! And, btw., lots of good restaurants in walking distance, too. The suite is really nice. Clean, quiet, stylish, a great kitchen and even a little garden. So yes, we plan to come back for another extended weekend one day.

  • Sylvia and Art have a great suite and were wonderful hosts. They were friendly, responsive, and helpful throughout the process of booking and checking in. I booked the suite for my parents who were visiting from out of town. They liked how quiet and comfortable the suite is and were very pleased with the amount of space they had. (The pictures don't do it justice.) The suite was clean and well-kept.

My parents liked that Sylvia and Art had provided recommendations of places to eat and things to see/do. They also flipped through several books about San Francisco in the suite and were excited to learn about other places to visit in the city.

My parents had to postpone their check-in time a couple hours because of travel delays, but Sylvia was completely understanding and even made sure to have the heated mattress pad turned on low for their arrival to make sure they would be completely comfortable. I know they appreciated that!

  • Sylvia and Art are great hosts! They are so nice and are really sincere about doing their best to make their guests comfortable. My personal favorite feature were all the heaters, especially the ones on the mattress. The neighborhood was so cool! So many good eats and very close to UCSF Medical Center. Parking was never an issue. I never drove around more than 3 minutes looking for parking and never parked more than 1 block away. Perfect place for 2. Would recommend to others.

  • We enjoyed staying at Art & Syl's suite. It's really quite large and the independent full kitchen is very convenient. The deck is also a great place to hang out, weather permitting, with the very nice scent of redwood. We stayed there with our two girls in November 2012, and Art and Syl were very helpful, but also very discrete, we had full privacy. The heater is a bit noisy, but you can heat at night with either the electric space heater and/or the heated mattress :) (we had to put the central heater on because of our kids). The location is good, of course if you are not wanting to stay in the busy areas of Downtown, Northbeach...It is a great base to find out about a more "real" SF, the Park, the Beach, but public transportation is easy (direct to downtown) and will take you anywhere. We had a car and did not have trouble finding parking everyday. There is not much natural light in the suite, at least in the winter, but it did not really matter since we were out all the time!

  • The apartment is very nice and very clean. It is comfortable and well appointed. It is also a basement apartment in the back of the house so it is extremely quiet. The seperate entrance made it very easy for us to come and go. Syl and Art were very easy to communicate with and very helpful. They were happy to provide any information needed for the area or to leave you alone if you pleased. We were able to text with them for arrival information and times. They were waiting on the stoop for us to arrive and hand over the keys.

  • This space is just lovely & the surrounding neighborhood is so beautiful and vibrant! Both the coast and the downtown area are easily accessible via public transportation, and the Golden Gate Bridge is just a short drive away. We felt very at home here and hope to come back again soon!

  • My boyfriend and my experience staying at Art and Sylvia's place was PERFECT! No problems and they go above and beyond to make sure you enjoy your stay and have everything you need.

Sylvia was very understanding that our flight was delayed and went out of her way and picked us up from the train station since we had such a rough day of traveling.

The place was even bigger, nicer and cuter than it looked online. It was a great location as well.

I will definitely stay there if I came to San Francisco again and reccomend it to anyone!

  • Our family (3) had a wonderful week in San Francisco. The weather was nice and people very friendly. Syl and Art's suite is an excellent place to stay; clean, quiet and close to shops and restaurants. Absolutely no noice at nights. Looks like it is recently renovated, especially the kitchen. The suite is also close to bus and tram stops. Syl and Art were very helpful when we needed something.

  • My fiancée and I were very happy with Sylvia and Art's place. Our stay was only for 4 nights. We got to meet both Sylvia and Art, they were very welcoming and hospitable. The apartment was clean and spacious. The kitchen was well equipped. The bathroom had enough towels for our stay. We had access to the deck in the backyard which was nice when the weather was agreeable. We were very comfortable in the neighbourhood and had no issues finding our way around. Overall a very pleasant place to stay and one which we will definitely consider again in the future.

About
We have lived in San Francisco,"everybody's favorite city," for over twenty years. Our children were raised in our great neighborhood, the Inner Sunset district, and we're excited to share the wonders of the city to all who visit our SF Suite. Both of us are career media professionals and volunteer in community arts organizations. We have traveled to many places in the U.S. and abroad and have always enjoyed staying in private residences to get a feel for how the locals live. On our travels we have enjoyed cooking our own meals as well as eating out. Hopefully our guests will benefit from what we've learned about hospitality and comfort. Our hosting style is service-oriented but not intrusive, where your privacy and comfort is our priority. We are interested in trading spaces with other Airbnb members, so let us know what you have! We live on the premises, above the suite and are always available to help our guests have the best stay possible. We look forward to meeting you!
