Looking for a place with character? Surrounded by nature not concrete? Still close to the city, but far away to disconnect and go for a hike up the hills?
Then this Treehouse in the hills of Escazu, the IN place of San Jose might be just right!
Recently finished Treehouse, done with lots of light wood and lots of windows; built with care right into the tree for a unique experience. A world away from downtown, but connected with a direct bus that will take you downtown for all the hustle.
I'm listing this space for my good friends Juanita and Roy, who have lived and developed the property for over 40 years (please note that both speak English). Beautiful grounds, lots of tropical foliage and flowers, they even have a fruit orchard and grow some organic veggies. You have never seen a hummingbird fly around, here you will!
It's a Treehouse in a living tree and space is not abundant, but there is a private terrace on the lower deck, a new mattress on the upper floor accessible by ladder only and you will feel part of your surroundings.
There always a fresh breeze going through the tree and you'll need a sweater or more. Breakfast will be served at the main house, usually on the outdoor terrace of the main house or indoors if the weather is not quite up to task. The Treehouse has no kitchen and meals are not provided. There are options in San Antonio de Escazu and also Escazu.
The Treehouse is ideal for guests that want to enjoy and experience regional cuisine and eat out a lot.
Wifi is available at the Treehouse.
With higher altitude, it's advisable to have a weather or long sleeve shirt as it is much fresher compared to San Jose and the beach.
The Treehouse, use of the outdoor terrace of the main house. Guests are free to explore the property and observe the many birds and butterflies. There is also fresh fruit on the trees, but please coordinate first.
The garden is also great to catch a nap in the afternoon and catch some sun! The Treehouse has it's own deck as well.
Interaction with Guests
Guests can define the level of interaction, but both Juanita and Roy are always happy to have guests and I personally spend afternoons full of great hospitality, yummy food, lots of talking there. Both speak English.
You are up in the hills of Escazu and not in walking distance to the hip parts, restaurants and shopping centers.
So if nightlife is important, this most likely is not the place.
There is a direct bus and for those that rent a car it's perfect. There are also buses that go from downtown San Jose to the town center, these run more frequently.
There is a direct bus and for those that rent a car it's perfect. Taxis are fairly inexpensive.
The last stop of the direct bus to Escazu and San Jose is around the bend from the property and takes about 45 min to downtown.
AIRPORT TO TREEHOUSE: We offer a shuttle service from the airport to Treehouse for $ 40 one way.
Public transportation is possible by first catching a bus from the airport to San Jose, then in walking distance from the bus terminal is the starting point for the bus to San Antonio de Escazu, El Curio. This is recommendable only for the hardy budget traveler with not so much luggage to carry around.
Here are the GPS coordinates: (phone number hidden)
Other Things to Note
It's fresh up in the mountains and even fresher in the tree. There is always a breeze going and you won't miss not having air conditioning come out of a box.
Security is an issue in all of Costa Rica, and if you plan to stay out late, you need to coordinate with Juanita and Rey.
Perfect start to our Costa Rican adventure. The treehouse is an experience we'll never forget. The views were incredible and Juanita and Leroy were wonderful hosts. We really enjoyed meeting their friends Karla and Tonio who took us to see a waterfall. We'd highly recommend to anyone!
Leroy and Juanita are lovely hosts and welcomed us into their home like old friends.
The treehouse was built by Leroy and is beautifully made with amazing views. Juanita cooked us a delicious meal on our arrival which was just what we needed after a long flight.
On our first morning Carla who works for them and her brother took us for a lovely hike into the hills nearby up to a beautiful waterfall. They looked after us so well and were perfect guides. We took Leroy's dog Goofy who carried rocks in his mouth for the entire walk! He is also quite a character!
Leroy drove us around to restaurants and into town and went way above what you would expect from a B & B.
We truly felt welcome. We hope one day to go back!
Thank you for a wonderful stay!
Hele mooie boomhut.
It is hard to find enough superlatives to describe the Treehouse and our hosts, Juanita and Leroy. First, the treehouse itself is magical--a place of whimsy and amazing views. It returned us to childhood (particularly me) and I recommend the experience, especially waking up to the sun in the windows and swinging in the double hammock. The property is beautiful and the kind of out-of-the-way experience I particularly love with airbnb...but all that said, the real reason to stay is to get to know Juanita, Leroy and Karla, who are among the warmest and kindest people I've ever met. In the end, traveling is about the people you meet and come to know, and we felt so lucky to get to know them. From the warm welcome, to the care and help, to the conversations and openness...this is Costa Rica at its best, and one of my best traveling experiences ever.
Waauuuw!! We had a great time with Juanita and Leroy. What an amazingly sweet people they are. The treehouse is awesome, exactly the way it's discribed. We hiked to the waterval with Karla who lives nearby and had a great adventure with her and Fernando, her son. Juanita made us perfect breakfasts and also she baked a fantastic cake! We couldn't have wished for anything more. We hope someday we meet again. If it's in Holland we hope we can repay them with our hospitality!
Tja, was soll man sagen... Sehr empfehlenswert.
We had a lovely time in the treehouse. Juanito and Rey were the best guests, making us delicious breakfasts and even a great dinner one night that we shared with them! They are extremely friendly and generous hosts and really made our trip to Costa Rica special! Thanks!

Love to read, enjoy the days as they come. Every now and then a stray comes along - some have stayed, while other cats and dogs have found new homes, so there is always some assortment of 4 legged friends around.
I have started to add a couple of additional listings from very good friends and I do vouch for each of the listings added. I hope that these listings can round out a trip to Costa Rica!
