About This Listing
Looking for a place with character? Surrounded by nature not concrete? Still close to the city, but far away to disconnect and go for a hike up the hills?
Then this Treehouse in the hills of Escazu, the IN place of San Jose might be just right!
Recently finished Treehouse, done with lots of light wood and lots of windows; built with care right into the tree for a unique experience. A world away from downtown, but connected with a direct bus that will take you downtown for all the hustle.
I'm listing this space for my good friends Juanita and Roy, who have lived and developed the property for over 40 years (please note that both speak English). Beautiful grounds, lots of tropical foliage and flowers, they even have a fruit orchard and grow some organic veggies. You have never seen a hummingbird fly around, here you will!
It's a Treehouse in a living tree and space is not abundant, but there is a private terrace on the lower deck, a new mattress on the upper floor accessible by ladder only and you will feel part of your surroundings.
There always a fresh breeze going through the tree and you'll need a sweater or more. Breakfast will be served at the main house, usually on the outdoor terrace of the main house or indoors if the weather is not quite up to task. The Treehouse has no kitchen and meals are not provided. There are options in San Antonio de Escazu and also Escazu.
The Treehouse is ideal for guests that want to enjoy and experience regional cuisine and eat out a lot.
Wifi is available at the Treehouse.
With higher altitude, it's advisable to have a weather or long sleeve shirt as it is much fresher compared to San Jose and the beach.
The Treehouse, use of the outdoor terrace of the main house. Guests are free to explore the property and observe the many birds and butterflies. There is also fresh fruit on the trees, but please coordinate first.
The garden is also great to catch a nap in the afternoon and catch some sun! The Treehouse has it's own deck as well.
Interaction with Guests
Guests can define the level of interaction, but both Juanita and Roy are always happy to have guests and I personally spend afternoons full of great hospitality, yummy food, lots of talking there. Both speak English.
You are up in the hills of Escazu and not in walking distance to the hip parts, restaurants and shopping centers.
So if nightlife is important, this most likely is not the place.
There is a direct bus and for those that rent a car it's perfect. There are also buses that go from downtown San Jose to the town center, these run more frequently.
There is a direct bus and for those that rent a car it's perfect. Taxis are fairly inexpensive.
The last stop of the direct bus to Escazu and San Jose is around the bend from the property and takes about 45 min to downtown.
AIRPORT TO TREEHOUSE: We offer a shuttle service from the airport to Treehouse for $ 40 one way.
Public transportation is possible by first catching a bus from the airport to San Jose, then in walking distance from the bus terminal is the starting point for the bus to San Antonio de Escazu, El Curio. This is recommendable only for the hardy budget traveler with not so much luggage to carry around.
Here are the GPS coordinates: (phone number hidden)
Other Things to Note
It's fresh up in the mountains and even fresher in the tree. There is always a breeze going and you won't miss not having air conditioning come out of a box.
Security is an issue in all of Costa Rica, and if you plan to stay out late, you need to coordinate with Juanita and Rey.
Alexandra answered any questions we had and was very prompt with her response! Me and my husband had the time of our lives up in the tree house! What a spectacular view! It was clean and comfortable and very unique! Like out of a magazine! Our hosts Juanita and Roy were the sweetest people we have ever met. They had great recommendations and they truly care and want you to have a good time! The first night Karla took us with Roy to a restaurant that had typical live music and dance. I literally felt as if I was living an Anthony Bourdain moment. Amazing! You can't get experiences like these in a hotel. Karla and her brother also took us on a hiking tour near a mountain close to the house. Off the beaten path kind of experience. She has hiked those mountains since she was a kid and her brother has cattle up there. She was patient and knowledgable of the land and we actually made it to see a waterfall. We couldn't have done it without them.Staying at Juanita and Roy's house is not only my best Airbnb experience, but my best travel experience! I can go on and on because in such short amounts of time I truly felt as if I had a family in Costa Rica. The views, comfort, the cleanliness, the warmth smiles that greet you...oh and Juanita's excellent cooking! We are definitely going back to their place again. We miss our Costa Rican family already!
The treehouse and our hosts were wonderful! Such an amazing view of San Jose both day and night. We wanted a place to relax after a long flight and it was perfect for that.
The treehouse was a dream! The grounds are impeccably kept by Juanita, Roy and their staff. I had read other reviews about the treehouse being very small, however, it was comfortable enough for myself and my 6.1' husband.
We were offered fresh guanabana juice upon our arrival and later on a fresh pot of coffee.
I would stay here again without (website hidden) Gracias Juanita and Roy!
Juanita and Roy had to be THE nicest people I have ever met! This was my first AirBnB experience. It was so positive and left a very high standard for other BnB experiences. Roy picked me up at the airport as promised . He had a welcome sign in hand and a hug to welcome me to Costa Rica. Juanita met me in the driveway with her charm and another warm welcome. When we got to the treehouse the views were amazing no matter where you stood. Upon entering there was a welcoming vase of fresh cut flowers from their gardens. There was a perfect amount of space in the treehouse and it was very clean. The loft had a comfortable bed. The porch offered views of San Jose and on the other side from the loft window you could see the mountains. The treehouse was a great stay with amazing hosts. I can not wait to visit Juanita and Roy again!
An amazing setting beatiful tree house with stunning views of the busy Capitol, if you want to leave the Mayhem behind this is the place to do it. The dogs are wonderful and the home cooking is not bad at all! Felt as if I was at my grandmas as soon as I arrived. Would recommend to anyone who just wants to chill!
This treehouse was the perfect stay before our flight out of SJO back to the states. A bit hard to find but with the GPS coordinates you will have no problem. Juanita and Ron are incredibly nice and we only wish we got to spend more time at their property talking to them! I know I will be back here next time I come to Costa Rica!
This treehouse is so amazing! Rey and Juanita are wonderful hosts with the right mix of hospitality but respect for personal space. Their treehouse is truly a work of art, and though quite small, is a perfectly comfortable and elegant space. It's wrap around top deck and lower deck offer spectacular views of the San Jose valley and surrounding hills both day and night. Very accessible to San Jose, close to the nice Escazu mall, and just over an hour away from Volcan Poas. Highly, highly recommended!

About the Host, Alexandra
Love to read, enjoy the days as they come. Every now and then a stray comes along - some have stayed, while other cats and dogs have found new homes, so there is always some assortment of 4 legged friends around.
I have started to add a couple of additional listings from very good friends and I do vouch for each of the listings added. I hope that these listings can round out a trip to Costa Rica!
