About this listing
Looking for a place with character? Surrounded by nature not concrete? Still close to the city, but far away to disconnect and go for a hike up the hills?
Then this Treehouse in the hills of Escazu, the IN place of San Jose might be just right!
Recently finished Treehouse, done with lots of light wood and lots of windows; built with care right into the tree for a unique experience. A world away from downtown, but connected with a direct bus that will take you downtown for all the hustle.
I'm listing this space for my good friends Juanita and Roy, who have lived and developed the property for over 40 years (please note that both speak English). Beautiful grounds, lots of tropical foliage and flowers, they even have a fruit orchard and grow some organic veggies. You have never seen a hummingbird fly around, here you will!
It's a Treehouse in a living tree and space is not abundant, but there is a private terrace on the lower deck, a new mattress on the upper floor accessible by ladder only and you will feel part of your surroundings.
There always a fresh breeze going through the tree and you'll need a sweater or more. Breakfast will be served at the main house, usually on the outdoor terrace of the main house or indoors if the weather is not quite up to task. The Treehouse has no kitchen and meals are not provided. There are options in San Antonio de Escazu and also Escazu.
The Treehouse is ideal for guests that want to enjoy and experience regional cuisine and eat out a lot.
Wifi is available at the Treehouse.
With higher altitude, it's advisable to have a weather or long sleeve shirt as it is much fresher compared to San Jose and the beach.
The Treehouse, use of the outdoor terrace of the main house. Guests are free to explore the property and observe the many birds and butterflies. There is also fresh fruit on the trees, but please coordinate first.
The garden is also great to catch a nap in the afternoon and catch some sun! The Treehouse has it's own deck as well.
Interaction with Guests
Guests can define the level of interaction, but both Juanita and Roy are always happy to have guests and I personally spend afternoons full of great hospitality, yummy food, lots of talking there. Both speak English.
You are up in the hills of Escazu and not in walking distance to the hip parts, restaurants and shopping centers.
So if nightlife is important, this most likely is not the place.
There is a direct bus and for those that rent a car it's perfect. There are also buses that go from downtown San Jose to the town center, these run more frequently.
There is a direct bus and for those that rent a car it's perfect. Taxis are fairly inexpensive.
The last stop of the direct bus to Escazu and San Jose is around the bend from the property and takes about 45 min to downtown.
AIRPORT TO TREEHOUSE: We offer a shuttle service from the airport to Treehouse for $ 40 one way.
Public transportation is possible by first catching a bus from the airport to San Jose, then in walking distance from the bus terminal is the starting point for the bus to San Antonio de Escazu, El Curio. This is recommendable only for the hardy budget traveler with not so much luggage to carry around.
Here are the GPS coordinates: (phone number hidden)
Other Things to Note
It's fresh up in the mountains and even fresher in the tree. There is always a breeze going and you won't miss not having air conditioning come out of a box.
Security is an issue in all of Costa Rica, and if you plan to stay out late, you need to coordinate with Juanita and Rey.
Staying in a tree house was a dream come true! Very fun. Alexandra was quick to respond and answer any questions we had through correspondence. The couple who lived the main house (Juanita and Leroy) were very friendly and helpful. Juanita made an amazing breakfast every day and on the first day we did a hike with Karla who educated us on the ins and outs of the city. It was incredible. A great place to stay. Especially with their 3 dogs, particularly Goofy :).
Our experience was great. Our hosts Juanita and Leroy (Alexandra is actually a friend who manages their Air B&B site) couldn't be nicer or more accommodating. They speak great English and Spanish. We totally got lost trying to find the tree house (Be Ware- It's either quite challenging to reach the final destination or I must be geographically challenged-LOL). A phone call later, Leroy came to the rescue and met us almost immediately. He actually made the tree house all by himself!! It was a really cool experience. The views at night of San Jose were breathtaking. The Tree house itself is quite comfortable and totally adorable. No air conditioning is needed- it's about 5,500 feet above sea level and the temperatures are about 70 degrees at night. One thing I might strongly suggest to add to the experience- bring a nights worth of food and drink with you to the tree house. Enjoy the ambiance of your first nights surroundings. A trek to reach a nice restaurant in the dark cover of night might be a challenge!! We loved it!!
Alexandra was very helpful with getting us set up in the tree house. She contacted us to ensure we made it to the location. Very nice of her.
Juanita and Leroy were our hosts at the tree house and they are the most adorable couple ever! My girlfriend and I arrived by bus and we weren't able to find the tree house (our fault). Juanita located us in her car and drove us back to the place. When we told her we didn't have any food, she insisted on feeding us dinner. Delicious!
Then there's the tree house itself. It was extremely cute and fully functional. (It's missing a kitchen but, come on, it's a tree house!) The view at day or night is a sight to behold. It took my breath away when the fog clear up on our first night and the city of San Jose just magically appeared below us. The wind and rain can make things noisy but I got used to it pretty quickly.
I can't recommend this place enough. Definitely one of the coolest places I've stayed at.
(Also, there are 3 dogs here. All so friendly. I miss Goofy. He would perch himself near the top of the tree house steps and was our mascot/guard dog.)
Everything was perfect!! Alexandria was very nice and responsive. Juanita and Leroy were a delight to talk with and were very gracious hosts! Delicious breakfast! Treehouse is the coolest, we want to come back!! It was amazing, thank you.
As soon as I arrived, Juanita was ready with a glass of fresh juice and a hug to greet me. She showed me around the property, to the treehouse, and showed me a few places in Escazu to get some food. The stay was magical.... I chose to sleep in the hammock instead of in the bed. There are roosters which you can hear crowing, and it can be windy which makes the treehouse sound like a sailboat but it wasn't disturbing. I would absolutely recommend staying here if you enjoy eating out, and are interested in seeing the volcano just outside of San Jose- there is a beautiful view from the treehouse of the whole city. Juanita prepared breakfast using fruit from her garden, and we had wonderful conversation (her english is great!) and she helped me with my spanish too. two thumbs up!
This treehouse is the highlight of my Costa Rica Trip. The treehouse is very nice and clean, you will definitely not regret booking this place. Besides the awesome place the host are very welcoming.
Words cannot describe how amazing this place is! We did not get to meet Juanita, but Roy and the staff were wonderful! We felt like we were staying with family. The location is beautiful and very relaxing. Everyone went out of their way to make sure our experience was the best. If we vacation in Costa Rica again, we would definitely stay here.

About the Host, Alexandra
Love to read, enjoy the days as they come. Every now and then a stray comes along - some have stayed, while other cats and dogs have found new homes, so there is always some assortment of 4 legged friends around.
I have started to add a couple of additional listings from very good friends and I do vouch for each of the listings added. I hope that these listings can round out a trip to Costa Rica!
