Beautifully renovated colonial home in Merida by New York architectural firm ode (website hidden). The home is conveniently located close to "El Centro" and the Escuela Superior de Artes (Art College) located in the city's former train station (website hidden) .
Inspired by renowned Mexican architect Luis Barragan (website hidden) the owner commissioned ode to design a comfortable yet indestructible home with an open floor plan. Something simple which would draw inspiration from the natural beauty of the city and its people while retaining a certain simplicity and fluidity.
The result was amazing ... from the front entrance to the casita (small house) located in the rear of the property. Ode was able to take the original house aptly titled - Mexican Colonial Meets the 1950's - and turn it into a flowing, light filled, romantic home.
The clean but graceful furniture found throughout the home was also designed by ode. Each unique piece being constructed of local materials and built by Mexican craftsmen to accentuate not only the beauty of the home but its natural surroundings.
Surprisingly, and without much pressure, ode found ways to "reuse" the old colonial's 1950's updates. The front gates and doors from the front of the house were simply modified and utilized in other areas of the home. Original colonial doors and shutters from the house became part of the new design. Anything that could be simplified and reused was standard order bringing new life to many original and updated elements. In finding ways to "build it green" ode also discovered this is very much in keeping with Mexico and its people ... the ability to recycle and reuse the existing.
There is a main house and rear "casita" on the property. The main house consists of a living room, kitchen, office, bedroom (queen bed) and full bath with direct pool and garden access. The air conditioned rear "casita" is a large open space with two queen beds, full bath with direct garden and private patio access.

My family and I stayed for 3 weeks in Merida. Pamela's house was great. We loved the rustic, modern decoration. The house is spacious and we enjoyed the backyard with the pool. Ivonne the administrator was always available, very accommodating to our needs, and helpful. The neighborhood is working class. There are not a lot of restaurants and amenities within walking distance. Nevertheless, we enjoyed interacting with the neighbors and buying from the street vendors that would come and sell you bread, milk, and vegetables. We enrolled our 3 year old daugther in the daycare next block and she loved it. The teachers were caring and she had lots of fun while practicing her Spanish. My wife contacted one of the Spanish teachers recommended by Ivonne and took private lessons. She liked the teacher a lot
Pam's house is very nice, but it could be even better with a little effort. I would recommend it to easy going people, like me and my friends. If you are looking for a perfect immaculate place go for an hotel. I loved this place because of its soul. Some of my mates didn't.
Wifi works perfectly and position is amazing.
Maria, closeby, will wash your clothes for few pesos, and this might be very helpful.
Wifi funzionava perfettamente
Il bagno non aveva molta privacy
I letti erano abbastanza comodi
La posizione era perfetta
Beautiful décor in house, simple and tasteful with the added bonus of having a separate bedroom unit at the far end of the property allowing for space and privacy for older family members. The biggest bonus was the fantastic pool surrounded by an attractive (website hidden) was easy with all utensils provided. Valuable information in file booklet left in house.
Friendly neighbourhood, nice local community, convenient for water, food and laundry. Within walking distance and excellent bus route into town. Safe parking on the street
Residential neighbourhood, cafe, shops, a feeling of being in a non tourist community. Friendly caretaker and strong Wi Fi and cable TV.
Pamela's house was just as described, beautifully renovated and within easy reach to the city centre.
The house had a very nice feel to it an the garden was perfect for having morning coffees by the pool. A nearby market provided ingredients for a fresh breakfast.
The bus to the city centre stops but the house and the trip takes only 5 minutes.
We are keen cooks and the kitchen was not that well equipped for preparing food. Anyhow Merida is full of nice inexpensive restaurants to enjoy.
Really loved this place, definitely lived up to if not exceeded our expectations. The house was spacious, clean and well kept and the pool - incredible. Thanks Pam!
Excelente ubicación. Limpia y tranquila.
Love to renovate !! When renovating / redesigning a space I strive for a sort of fluid openness which incorporates most elements of the basic structure but at the same time somehow simplifies the space. Strive to "repurpose" whenever possible. I continually look for ways to "work with what I have" when on a project. Using unique materials that are made to withstand the test of time are also big on my list. Open things up and make them more livable. Have worked on many conversion projects in NYC. This was my first project in Mexico accomplished with good friend and great architect Tim Koelle!
