This is a wonderful, romantic Roman penthouse - conjured up in an ancient building in one of Rome's great piazzas by a top Roman architect. He played with the curves and created a tower penthouse jewel over Rome with a very large eat-out terrace and views of St. Peter's and the roofs of ancient Rome. It has that wow factor that only an ancient Roman place combined with modern interior design can give you.
It has two bedrooms. Plus a snug alcove which can be improvised as a third bedroom. One of the ensuite bathrooms has two entrances so it works fine.
From the master bedroom you have a view of one of the 7 hills of Rome - the very green Aventino (one of the more fashionable and upscale places to live in Rome). The master boasts a large shower, a plasma TV, and original beamed ceilings.
The second bedroom can fit two beds or a double bed as you prefer. There's an ensuite bathroom with a decent shower and easy access to the roof top garden.
Other features offered by Mercanti:
* Full modern kitchen on the bottom floor
* Kitchenette with fridge, toaster, coffee machine etc on the roof top garden.
* Air conditioning & independent heating everywhere
* Huge eat-out, BBQ Terrace with great views of ancient Rome
* Guide available for to tell you about all the monuments you see from your roof!
* Plasma TVs
* Original Wood Rafter Ceilings
* Elevator to the top floor
* Beautifully elegant marble entrance
* View of the green Aventine hills from the master bedroom
* 2nd smaller double bedroom with queen bed (or a single) and own
* Washing machine
* Roman Cotto Floors
Piazza Mercanti is one of the most well-known piazza's in Rome - home of Taverna Mercanti, home to top Italian singer Venditi (he owns the building next door), and the very beautiful Cathedral of Santa Cecilia.
This is the quieter side of Trastevere. Windy cobble stone streets just as the Northern side of Rome's entertainment/ancient slave district, but there are no huge crowds here. Lots of pubs, restaurants etc within a minute walk but you'll have a quieter experience than at my other two places in Rome.
You will feel the very special nature of this place - it is an architect's jewel - overlooking the eternal city.
I offer 3 apartments in Rome - see my other listings. This one is new to airbnb as I just got it back from the long term tenant.
I have tried to put together lots of info for my guests and collected some activities run by friends& friends that I know are A+. From valet parking, to Italian cooking classes chez you, Yoga by a US certified instructor, catered breakfast with local ingredients on your terrace - ready for when you wake up, skip-the-queue Vatican tours, etc. When you book, I send you an informal list of tips about Rome and your planning info.
You are making your vacation better/easier by coming to stay with us - we team with you to help you plan.

September 2013. If looking for a place to stay on a city trip in Rome, look no further. Very elegant and comfortable penthouse, ideal location in beautiful Trastevere, and an incredible view from an incredible terrace ! The owners are charming, service minded and extremely good communicators. Highly recommended !

The apartment was in a great location and exactly as pictured. Martin and his sister were extremely helpful in hosting us - from offering up tips, arranging car service, and sharing their love of Rome. You could not ask for better hosts. Their responsiveness was great. The apartment was spacious and the air condition was great in the all the rooms (though hard to get part of the master cool). The washing machine was a bit of a challenge to use but they responded quickly. Finally, given the location, the quality of the apartment and the hosts, I would say it was great value. I would definitely book with them again.
The location is ideal, the view is great, the kitchen and living room are wonderful, and the master bedroom and bath are amazing. We were two couples and the second bedroom is a tight squeeze -- tighter than what we could see on the photos. Otherwise, highly recommended.
This was the best possible start to our holiday in Italy and France! I can only reiterate what others have said about dealing with Martin and his team - it makes for an easy and fantastic experience of Rome. Before you arrive you are given a wealth information in the form of a Rome 'Wiki' - all very useful information that helped us during our stay! The apartment itself is fantastic and the roof-top terrace is a fantastic place to sit and enjoy a glass of wine or two. We are a family of four and the apartment suited us perfectly with plenty of room for everyone. The location in Trastevere was excellent and we would highly recommend it as a base to stay and explore Rome. We really loved this area and will definitely return. We also had a great tour of the Vatican museum with Pina - the children loved her! Thanks again and we hope to be back (after all we did throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain!).
Beliggenheden er helt i top når man gerne vil det 'gamle Rom'. Lejligheden er helt i top med hensyn til inventar og service m.m.. den store tagterasse er et hit!
Casa Picard is amazing. It sits in the south part of Trastevere, but it´s walking distance from all the major sites in Rome. Martin was 100% on board since the reservation, has great tips for almost anything in town and arranged everything to perfection.
We were 4 girls and had 3 big double beds to sleep on, so that went perfectly. 2 bathrooms, a confortable kitchen and small living room - that one hardly stays in at all because of the fantastic terrace, overlooking Rome´s roofs with ringing bells...it´s quiet at night, super bright during the day...and I could go on and on about how I enjoyed it and how I long to go back (in case I win the lottery, I would try to buy it off Martin!!!). If you are thinking of going to Rome and don´t mind spending a bit more for a memorable stay, go here!
We had a great stay in Rome and although we didn't meet Martin or Elizabeth, everything ran smoothly. The apartment was a great space for our family of 4. We enjoyed the rooftop terrace in spite of the rain and managed a great bbq one evening.
The area is amazing and full of great places to grab a coffee, beer or a meal.
We highly recommend taking a tour with Pina who is suggested in Martin's SUPERB Rome wiki.
During our stay, Elizabeth checked in via email often to make sure we had all we needed.
My family and I would stay here again in a heart beat! Beautiful flat in an excellent Roman neighbourhood owned and managed by a dedicated and professional family! Get going!
Let me start by saying you will never be better taken care in Rome than by Martin & his Picard team in terms of knowing "how to do Rome" from all of the info on the wiki he provides you once you book-in. And once there someone from the Picard team will check in on you almost daily. As for the Penthouse... it is CHARMING. The beds are very comfy and clean and the views are amazing from the rooftop terrace and master bedroom window. The only downside for us was the master bath was quite tired and in need of an update. Martin informed me that he is planning to do this over the winter. This will make the flat even more comfy and more of a sense of feeling clean. The kitchen is a bit dark but does have everything you need. The living room is quiet small as it is in the round- but oh so cute. I loved looking down from above from the bedroom floor down onto the living room. You really get a sense that you are living in a tower with all of the little steps leading you up from the living room /kitchen to the bedrooms and then eventually to the terrace! It is lovely. Finally you cannot beat the LOCATION! It is PERFECT! Our kids loved the area as did my husband and I. The location and the penthouse was the perfect place for our family of four! I only wish we could have used the rooftop terrace a but more as the weather turned while there - but still LOVED the neighborhood and all that it has to offer in the way of cafes, restaurants and location to ancient Rome! A fall break from school we will never forget. Thanks Martin and Team Picard!
I'm happy to report that the glowing deserves for Martin & team's hospitality are well-deserved ... he is a magnificently helpful host -- starting with transport to and from the airport or train terminal, food in the fridge which we were able to pre-order, somebody to meet us at the place ... perfect after a long trip!
As a couple, we enjoyed the luxury of so much space. The private roof-top terrace was very nice (although as an author on a working vacation, I did note that the otherwise excellent wifi connection did not reach up there :-).The beds were comfortable, the shower good, we had a pleasant time cooking breakfast every morning ... kitchen even has a dish-washer!
From a tourist in Rome vantage point, this is probably as good as it can get. We like to walk and found it easy to get to the Colloseum, Roman Forum and many other hot-spots by foot. Public transport is good too. And, beyond anything I've seen on airbng (or other sites), Martin provides a plethora of practical info and recommendations via a (website hidden).doc -- the perfect way to do it ... this guy is a great manager of a great place!
This place is great, the location is wonderful, you are in the heart of Rome, so easy to walk everywhere. We stayed with three children and there was plenty of room for all. The beds are really comfortable and the roof top terrace is fantastic. Martin is a great host, easy to contact and always willing to help. You are never alone, whatever you need Martin will arrange. The pantry stock on arrival was brillant especially when arriving with young children who are hungry and tired! If we are lucky to come to Rome again we would stay here, or at any of Martins other places. He is an exceptional host.
Thanks Samantha! I wish I could claim all the credit but I have a team of 5 host/concierges for only 3 apartments so it's easy to be there for our guests. Rossana in particular is a star at navigating the local markets to pick fresh produce for our guests. Brava Rossana! Buon Viaggio Chris and Smanatha!
