About this listing
Perhaps the most romantic & hassle free place you could stay in Rome. See the reviews for confirmation. A roof top terrace over Rome, full comforts and a master bedroom with view of the Aventine hill. Elevator, AC, & all comforts. A caring host.
This is a wonderful, romantic Roman penthouse - conjured up in an ancient building in one of Rome's great piazzas by a top Roman architect. He played with the curves and created a tower penthouse jewel over Rome with a very large eat-out terrace and views of St. Peter's and the roofs of ancient Rome. It has that wow factor that only an ancient Roman place combined with modern interior design can give you.
It has two bedrooms. Plus a snug alcove which can be improvised as a third bedroom. One of the ensuite bathrooms has two entrances so it works fine.
From the master bedroom you have a view of one of the 7 hills of Rome - the very green Aventino (one of the more fashionable and upscale places to live in Rome). The master boasts a large shower, a plasma TV, and original beamed ceilings.
The second bedroom can fit two beds or a double bed as you prefer. There's an ensuite bathroom with a decent shower and easy access to the roof top garden.
Other features offered by Mercanti:
* Full modern kitchen on the bottom floor
* Kitchenette with fridge, toaster, coffee machine etc on the roof top garden.
* Air conditioning & independent heating everywhere
* Huge eat-out, BBQ Terrace with great views of ancient Rome
* Guide available for to tell you about all the monuments you see from your roof!
* Plasma TVs
* Original Wood Rafter Ceilings
* Elevator to the top floor
* Beautifully elegant marble entrance
* View of the green Aventine hills from the master bedroom
* 2nd smaller double bedroom with queen bed (or a single) and own
* Washing machine
* Roman Cotto Floors
Piazza Mercanti is one of the most well-known piazza's in Rome - home of Taverna Mercanti, home to top Italian singer Venditi (he owns the building next door), and the very beautiful Cathedral of Santa Cecilia.
This is the quieter side of Trastevere. Windy cobble stone streets just as the Northern side of Rome's entertainment/ancient slave district, but there are no huge crowds here. Lots of pubs, restaurants etc within a minute walk but you'll have a quieter experience than at my other two places in Rome.
You will feel the very special nature of this place - it is an architect's jewel - overlooking the eternal city.
I offer 3 apartments in Rome - see my other listings. This one is new to airbnb as I just got it back from the long term tenant.
I have tried to put together lots of info for my guests and collected some activities run by friends& friends that I know are A+. From valet parking, to Italian cooking classes chez you, Yoga by a US certified instructor, catered breakfast with local ingredients on your terrace - ready for when you wake up, skip-the-queue Vatican tours, etc. When you book, I send you an informal list of tips about Rome and your planning info.

Hello! Thanks so much for booking with me. I will do my very best to make sure you LOVE it. Rome always does its best so I know you are going to have a wonderful time.
You'll receive an email from me with everything you need to know and a quick way for you to tell me your requirements. We'll arrange a car service for you, put food in the fridge, make reservations at great restaurants for you etc. Consider us your concierge in Rome!
We absolutely loved our experience here. The property is clean and comfortable and the rooftop is fantastic. It is in the heart of Trastevere, which is a charming neighborhood with many walkable restaurants and shops. The team was very professional. Alex was there to greet us and was great. Elizabeth was very responsive and we received a reply email to our questions within a very short timeframe. The fridge stocking was a huge bonus and our family of six appreciated it. This is a well run property and we'd highly recommend it.
This is a wonderful apartment, and Elizabeth and Martin are two excellent hosts. The location is very central for Rome, and the surrounding neighborhood is lovely. Elizabeth and Martin gave us more information than we would ever need for a visit to Rome, and they were very responsive whenever we reached out with questions. The apartment is spacious and very comfortable--and the view from the rooftop balcony is spectacular. Thank you Elizabeth and Martin for a great visit!
Was a great place to be, felt welcome (appreciated the water and the wine). The most we enjoyed the terrace at night (one of the reasons we chose the apartment). The surrounding area: splendid! Lots of good restaurants and excellent shopping. Would definitely rent it again if returning to Rome.
The apartment is superbly positioned in the quieter part of Trastevere. Close to the river and fabulous local restaurants. The apartment was more than adequately setup for our needs, and we would seriously consider using it again when we are next in Rome.
Thanks David! Indeed the interesting thing about our ancient place is that it is positioned on top of the old Vatican dungeons. They were rather quiet then and still are now.... But the neighborhood itself is very lively only a 5 minute walk away.
Michele Obama's "favorite" restaurant (so the owner insists..) is only 2 minutes walk away and is delightfully non touristy. Whereas the craziest and most delicious pizza place in town is another 4 minutes walk in the opposite direction. We provide our guests with all the info to choose a different tried and true local favorite every night.
We arrived in Rome after 9 hour flight. Elizabeth was kind enough to allow us early check in. Condo was exactly as described. Elevator to Penthouse was super helpful with luggage. Alex met us at Condo with cold water and great recommendations of places to go. We ordered the Condo to be stocked with food and enjoyed all of it. The fresh bread melted in our mouth. The roof terrace was our favorite spot to sit after a long day of sight seeing. Cool breezes and wonderful sunsets. Best place in Rome for a glass of wine!! Elizabeth was great , checking in, via text, if we needed anything. I highly recommend the deli/ market around the corner and the restaurants below. All great. Many thanks to Elizabeth for helping with transportation both to and from Rome. Could not have had a better time. The location is great.
Thanks Andy! I realized early on that it is no use offering a top place if you don't offer top service. Some people want their host to completely disappear and provide a very private quiet vacation- which we are very good at. Others like the idea of being able to call us for restaurant recommendations and bookings, tips for days out with the kids etc. After a few decades in Rome, we're pretty handy finding the things for every desire - or just making sure everyone has a hassle free arrival and stay.

About the Host, Martin
I am a tech entrepreneur with a growing team of top developers helping me develop Vreasy - a novel software platform. Thus I rent out the places I bought with the proceeds from my last software company. The $ I make goes straight into salaries for my employees - engineers, web designers and contractors around the world. I also employ several people (hosts, cleaners, maintenance people) to keep everything running smoothly with the apartments. I like to think I contribute to the economy!
Managing these apartments made me discover that I really like seeing Rome through the eyes of my guests and really like the interaction with so many people from different places around the world. I'm joined by my Sister - a US-trained yoga instructor in Rome. She'll act as your Rome insider and advise you on everything there is to do and see. We're pretty organized as we have Vreasy to help us stay on track.
For those of you whose next stop in Europe is Barcelona - come and visit me! I hop inbetween Bcn and Rome. My office is by the beach in the old part of town. If you love flying join my "Barcelona Seaplane Flyers Club " a share-the-gas-expenses only flying club for which I am the pilot. Lets hop over to Menorca or to a mountain lake. A presto! & Nos vemos pronto!
