A couple of small eateries and food trucks close. We go to the health food store in Haleiwa almost daily, open markets on thurs. and sat. close by and if you want to carpool, hop in!
Set on 2 acres of tropical gardens, with fruit trees and flowers everywhere. The rear deck is shaded by a huge Banyan and Mango, perfect spot to watch the waves roll in at Sunset Beach. There is an upstairs bedroom with a small office looking out over the ocean. Wireless internet, cable, and kitchenette with everything (except an oven) you need for meal prep. A communal yoga deck is situated next to the main house that we love to share with travelers who are interested in practicing with us. Great location, right down the road from Sunset Beach. Stayed two nights and it was perfect for checking out all of the different beaches in the area, including sunset, pipeline, and Waimea bay.
The cabin was one of a kind, overlooking the beach from the side of the mountain. Comfortable and secluded.
Bikes and boards were readily available, I personally didn't take advantage of the boards but that was after watching the intensity of the ocean on the North Shore in Winter.
John's place was so enjoyable. It gave us the chance to experience the north shore in relaxed local style. You can actually check the surf from bed!! The food tastes so good at the nearby cafe's - Tom's Bakery, The Beet Box Cafe bus etc . Or maybe the food just tastes better on the north shore (especially after a surf).
The cabin was basic but had everything we needed and the setting was superb. The mosaiced shower with a view of Sunset Beach was great.
The best way to soak up the north shore vibe is by borrowing one of John's beach cruiser bikes (there were 3 functioning bikes for my husband, my daughter and I), there is bike track all the way from Sunset to Haliewa. We were able to borrow some snorkelling gear to check out Shark's Cove (actually lots of fish to see there) and we were also able to borrow a couple of older foam surfboards to take to the local breaks. John and his son and others were helpful with the little things that we needed here and there and were very approachable. Great place.
Great place to be. Close to Sunset Beach, nice views. Friendly hosts. Steep steps. I would certainly come back.
Definitely the best place at North Shore to stay! We loved the lush garden, the sounds of the giant waves at night and the birds at down, early morning coffee at the balcony.. Thank you John!
This place is amazing. There is no other location like it (we think) in Sunset Beach. Set on the side of a hill, the views from the cabin to Sunset Beach were amazing. The walk up the stairs referred to in the description were not a problem for us. Be prepared for a very natural and open style of accommodation. John and his son's were very helpful and generous in what they made available for us to use (bikes, snorkels, surf boards, SUP's). This place was so refreshing after being in Waikiki for a few nights prior, and we were sad to leave.
We loved to stay at this spot of paradise! Very peaceful, charming, with great view of the pacific and its big waves!!
Helpful people and great nature, the best spot at north shore to stay!!
Epic vacation in large part due to lodging. Would never stay anywhere else. Only complaint was having to leave! Friendly, quiet, clean, private, helpful people, close to the beach.
My husband and I stayed in the Surf Cabin above Sunset Beach for 5 nights last week. We LOVED our stay. The location and ambiance is perfect. The grounds of John's home and 3 rentals is gorgeous and very secluded, each rental is isolated from the others. It's an amazing place with the feel of tree houses. John, the others there and the 2 dogs definitely have the ALOHA spirit - they were very welcoming and hospitable. John even helped us with our luggage up the steep stair way to our cabin. On our second day we needed something and within minutes it was provided to us. In the room there was a Guest Book that people had written their experiences along with their recommended suggestions for things to do and places to eat in the area. Sunset Beach is wonderful and just down the hill - takes 3-5 minutes to walk there. The bike and walking path are all along the beach which makes it a fabulous location to stay on the North Shore. The surf cabin has most everything you need. Kitchen items to do basic meals (no oven or stove but a 2 burner hot plate which worked great), dish towels, plush bath and beach towels, soap (no shampoo or conditioner - we brought some from the hotel we stayed at in Waikiki), a hair dryer, a desk, GREAT wi-fi, 2 little decks to sit on to enjoy the views including checking out the waves, bikes, surf boards, even tow-in equipment, etc., etc. John has lived and been a part of and surfed the North Shore for 30+ years. He is definitely a part of surfdom. So if you want to experience a true North Shore surfer lifestyle, with all the water toys you can imagine, this is the place for you!! The only down-side was that the time went WAY too fast. We wished we had booked the surf cabin for 7-10 days!! Thank you, John, for sharing a part of your life with us. :)))))))))
Loved it. We stayed 1 night in the Surf Cabin and the following 2 nights in the Bungalow Tree House. Both were cozy and comfortable and have fantastic views! The owners were friendly and easily available if you have any needs. The two old dogs were a fun addition, too. One came to visit us (up many uneven rocky stairs!) at both cabins. We especially loved the porch at the Bungalow Tree House. One night even it rained and it felt like we were sleeping in the jungle but dry. Even with all the windows were open, no water came in. The place was very protected by the trees surrounding it. We also loved watching the surfers out on the ocean from the porches. We would love to go back in the future!
We loved staying at the Surf Cabin for a short stay on the North Shore. It is just as described, was easy to get to, had parking just outside, and was a beautiful spot to relax and have a great "home base" while on Oahu. Check-in was super easy, we felt comfortable on the property throughout our stay, and the view was fantastic. We'd definitely stay again, and highly recommend John's spot!
