At a tranquil dream location in Chianti mid-way between Florence and SIena, L'Antica Cistera is a tastefully restored traditional Tuscan farmhouse tucked away in the rolling Chianti hills overlooking the Elsa valley and San Gimignano.
The villa sleeps up to 10 people in four bedrooms and has three bathrooms and spacious living areas.
It is a perfect starting point for visits to Tuscany's Unesco heritage sites and other nearby historic centres and market towns, and affords plenty of opportunities for discovering and enjoying the stunningly beautiful surrounding countryside. Distances: Florence (30km), Siena (35km), San Gimignano (18km), Certaldo Alto, birthplace of Boccaccio (10km).
The house dates back to the 17th century at least and some parts, such as the underground granary and stone foundations, may be mediaeval. Indeed, it is within the conservation area of Semifonte, the fortified city that was razed to the ground in 1202 by the Florentines.
The owners live in a separate part of the house. We are British, are fluent in Italian and are at your disposal for advice and assistance with your stay in Tuscany, e.g. reservations, tourist recommendations and activities.
The property has the following facilities:
• tastefully furnished and decorated rooms with original beamed ceilings and terracotta floors,
• garden: vine-shaded terrace with tables and barbecue, sun terrace, olive grove
• swimming pool shared with the neighbouring house, 9 x 4 metres
• satellite TV with video player
• parking for 2-3 vehicles
Guests are requested not to smoke indoors.
We do not ask for a deposit for damage, but we do ask you to report any fault or breakage immediately.
The local authority operates a recycling scheme, so we ask you to sort your waste in accordance with the instructions in our visitors'guide.
Washing may be done by arrangement with the owners, for a small charge.
Wow, what a nice farmhouse with stunning view! Centrally located on the Chianti wineroute. Very quiet and peaceful yet close to many attractions. Charming, rustic, comfortable, well equipped and spacious house. We loved the clean pool.
Do not forget mosquito repellents!
Close to good restaurants, shops and markets.
Great place to stay in Tuscany!
Charly welcomed us at the house and showed us around upon arrival. The photos on the website did not do the house justice. It is much prettier in person and provided the perfect Tuscan experience! The views were gorgeous and Charly was very helpful with booking a cooking class, wine tasting, and with providing driving directions and advise to nearby areas. Unfortunately, the pool was not usable while we were there. We specifically chose a house with a pool, expecting to make use of it daily. It was incredibly hot, so it was very disappointing that we couldn't use it. We were not informed ahead of time. The only other negative was that a couple of the beds were much too firm.
We spent 2 weeks at this wonderful property in the heart of Tuscany. The house is in a perfect location giving beautiful views of the countryside and neighbouring villages and towns. The property was big enough to accomodate our group of 8 adults, with plenty of space to chill out on your own if you wanted to. It is a lovely farmhouse full of character and we found Charly to be very helpful when booking restaurants, general advice on where to visit etc. Some of our group had a truly magical evening at the local church listening to a wonderful soprano singer and her husband playing the piano, followed by wine and food in the church grounds. We also really enjoyed use of the pool in the first week as it was very hot. However, the pool was not usable through most of the second week and we found this very disappointing as it was one of the reasons we chose this property. It was a shame that they weren't able to rectify this problem before the end of our stay. Despite this, we all really enjoyed the time we spent together at the farmhouse in Tuscany.
Wow, what a place. We travel a lot and this place has to be one of the best we have stayed in. Highly recommended. I have a feeling we will be doing annual returns to Tuscany now!
This house where more then ever expected . Magnificant view from terrace.
Big space and nicely decorated , great kitchen for the one that likes cooking !!
Very space full rooms, so great to travel with at least two-three families.
We are absolutely returning. Charly and Ann where very helpful and kind hosts.
Thank you !!
There is not enough space here to describe how incredible our experience was at Ann and Charly's villa, or how happy we are to have met them!
Our trip started out as a family trip for 8 people to their beautiful converted farmhouse, which is right down the road from the historic and magical medieval village of Certaldo Alto. A few months before we arrived, Philippe and I got engaged and had the crazy idea to have our wedding in Tuscany. When we contacted Ann to ask about having the dinner portion of the wedding at the villa, to my surprise she told me she was an experienced wedding coordinator and would be happy to have the wedding there! Once we started talking about details we discovered that Ann and Charly could cover every aspect of the wedding from professional interpreter services, cooking classes, the wedding meal and set-up (and clean-up!), pre-coordination with Italian vendors, florist and musician connections, help with Italian paperwork... The wedding came together due to this amazing couple, who welcomed us to their home and went above and beyond to make it an experience no one will ever forget.
All of the wedding planning and hosting aside - the villa itself is a perfect Tuscan vacation home. It is immaculately kept with great rustic but modern and tasteful decor, is very spacious (even bigger and better than the photos!) and the view from the terrace is picture perfect Tuscany. It is tricky to find the first time, so follow Ann's written instructions closely, but you will find that it is extremely convenient to get to both Certaldo and San Giminigano by car.
As hosts, Ann and Charly provided a 5 star experience. They assisted with anything and everything, from taxi arrangements, helping to book dinners at local restaurants (you must eat at Cum Quibus in San Gimignano!), giving us tips about local wineries, etc. They provide a laundry service if you need it, and they even sell their own olive oil produced from their olive grove. For more about the services they can provide you can check out: (website hidden)
We also really appreciated being able to communicate with Ann and Charly in English. Do not underestimate how important this can be if, like us, your Italian language skills are non-existant. This was invaluable, as many business owners in the area only speak Italian, and Ann and Charly acted on countless occasions as our interpreters when we wanted book or organise things during our stay (Charly was even the interpreter at our wedding ceremony!) .
We really cannot recommend this villa highly enough, and feel so lucky to have found it amongst a sea of other B&Bs in the region. This is the place to stay in Certaldo! Grazie mille, Ann and Charly!
Absolutely wonderful, with no complaints. - This is a wonderful (quiet) country-style farm house, with four generous bedrooms and three bathrooms, with a big kitchen (well equipped), big dinning room, and nice den/family room. There is also a nice outside patio (in their picture) with incredibly vistas over the valley towards San Gimignano. With the southern exposure, it is sunny all day long - The outside sits 8 for a nice dinner, or sun tanning. There is also a covering "umbrella" if the sun is too much. And both Charly & Anne are sweet, quiet, and helpful in suggestions or a quick call to book a dinner reservation.
Note: (website hidden) maps has the location on a wrong part of the street! GPS in the car worked better (only after we struggled to get the address entered!). To be clear, this is located in the countryside, and not easily found. But everything is relatively close for wonderful day trips in any direction....and what a place to come back to for tea time/cocktail-hour.
