About this listing
At a tranquil dream location in Chianti mid-way between Florence and SIena, L'Antica Cistera is a tastefully restored traditional Tuscan farmhouse tucked away in the rolling Chianti hills overlooking the Elsa valley and San Gimignano.
The villa sleeps up to 10 people in four bedrooms and has three bathrooms and spacious living areas.
It is a perfect starting point for visits to Tuscany's Unesco heritage sites and other nearby historic centres and market towns, and affords plenty of opportunities for discovering and enjoying the stunningly beautiful surrounding countryside. Distances: Florence (30km), Siena (35km), San Gimignano (18km), Certaldo Alto, birthplace of Boccaccio (10km).
The house dates back to the 17th century at least and some parts, such as the underground granary and stone foundations, may be mediaeval. Indeed, it is within the conservation area of Semifonte, the fortified city that was razed to the ground in 1202 by the Florentines.
The owners live in a separate part of the house. We are British, are fluent in Italian and are at your disposal for advice and assistance with your stay in Tuscany, e.g. reservations, tourist recommendations and activities.
The property has the following facilities:
• tastefully furnished and decorated rooms with original beamed ceilings and terracotta floors,
• garden: vine-shaded terrace with tables and barbecue, sun terrace, olive grove
• swimming pool shared with the neighbouring house, 9 x 4 metres
• satellite TV with video player
• parking for 2-3 vehicles
Guests are requested not to smoke indoors.
We do not ask for a deposit for damage, but we do ask you to report any fault or breakage immediately.
The local authority operates a recycling scheme, so we ask you to sort your waste in accordance with the instructions in our visitors'guide.
Washing may be done by arrangement with the owners, for a small charge.
Beautiful surroundings and amazing views. Great layout with spacious bedrooms and big kitchen for cooking and sharing meals. The hosts were very responsive to any emails and gave great directions to get to their home from Rome.
Given the extreme heat in Italy this summer, the lack of air conditioning was a bit uncomfortable.
The six of us arrived and were completely captivated. We were greeted by both Charly and Ann, made to feel right at home provided with lots of helpful information which made our trip so much more enjoyable. The pictures truly do not capture the beauty of the place and the perfect location. Our high light was the night we went to see Charly sing with his local choir in the small town church. It was magic.
I encourage anyone who wants a perfect vacation to stay with Ann and Charly.
We are three Australian couples in our 60s who recently enjoyed eight days together at l'Antica Cisterna. We spent time relaxing on the terrace overlooking the stunning Tuscan countryside and swimming in the pool across the road.
Our spacious accommodation included a large country style kitchen which made preparation of our meals easy and enjoyable.
As mentioned in other reviews, a car is essential for shopping and sightseeing. However, we did not have a car, but chose to employ the services of a local driver with a people mover. The advantage (in addition to his local knowledge) was that we were dropped off and picked up from the centre of the cities / towns we visited. We had wonderful day trips to San Gimignano, Florence and Siena.
We were looking forward to taking daily walks but in this hilly countryside walking is not for the faint hearted.
We enjoyed chatting with our genial host Charly who was happy to answer our questions about the local area. He recommended an authentic Tuscan dining experience with his neighbours Emma, Gian Carlo and their son Matteo. Our four course feast with wines and wonderful conversation with them in their home, made our last night in Tuscany most memorable.
A stay at l'Antica Cisterna is a wonderful opportunity to experience rural Tuscany.
We had a great time at Charly and Ann's place. Both are very friendly, very discrete and helpful. The location is perfectly situated in a very a quiet environment with shops and restaurants at a reasonable distance. The house is beautifully decorated and the kitchen with the high working table truly invites to cook. Our only critique was the lack of sharp knifes (we sharpened them). The rooms are very spacious and the beds were comfortable even when they seemed hard at the first touch. We did spend the most of our days outside on the sunny terrace with it's stunning view, but I think the interior was cosy and big enough to spend some rainy or colder days inside. The pool is also very nice and beautifully located between olive trees but was a little too chill at the time for our small children (as the pool is not heated ). Thank you Charly and Ann
What a slice of heaven! Our delightful hosts, Charly & Ann, have just that. It's a little tricky to find in all the winding roads but if you follow their directions exactly (don't use a gps, it won't work!), you will get there in good order. The house was very spacious and well equipped. Lovely antiques and comfortable spaces. Note that it does have a spiral staircase to the upstairs bedrooms which might be difficult for those less agile. The views simply can't be beat. The weather was perfect for our group of 6 so we were able to eat our meals outside each day and enjoy the incredible views. The location is great for seeing all the famous and not so famous hill towns and the drives to and from the farmhouse were adventures in themselves. Ann arranged for a cooking lesson just up the road for us and the following night we went wine tasting with the teacher and her husband. Truly a most wonderful house and warm, engaging hosts.
