At a tranquil dream location in Chianti mid-way between Florence and SIena, L'Antica Cistera is a tastefully restored traditional Tuscan farmhouse tucked away in the rolling Chianti hills overlooking the Elsa valley and San Gimignano.
The villa sleeps up to 10 people in four bedrooms and has three bathrooms and spacious living areas.
It is a perfect starting point for visits to Tuscany's Unesco heritage sites and other nearby historic centres and market towns, and affords plenty of opportunities for discovering and enjoying the stunningly beautiful surrounding countryside. Distances: Florence (30km), Siena (35km), San Gimignano (18km), Certaldo Alto, birthplace of Boccaccio (10km).
The house dates back to the 17th century at least and some parts, such as the underground granary and stone foundations, may be mediaeval. Indeed, it is within the conservation area of Semifonte, the fortified city that was razed to the ground in 1202 by the Florentines.
The owners live in a separate part of the house. We are British, are fluent in Italian and are at your disposal for advice and assistance with your stay in Tuscany, e.g. reservations, tourist recommendations and activities.
The property has the following facilities:
• tastefully furnished and decorated rooms with original beamed ceilings and terracotta floors,
• garden: vine-shaded terrace with tables and barbecue, sun terrace, olive grove
• swimming pool shared with the neighbouring house, 9 x 4 metres
• satellite TV with video player
• parking for 2-3 vehicles
We were with two other families for a total of 8 adults and one infant. The home was beautiful, the setting exquisite. The beds were comfortable, the pool was clean and cool and a great relief. Furthermore the families upstairs never heard the baby crying downstairs in the night. Charlie was a fount of information, very professional and very sweet. We would recommend this home to everyone! Thank you Charlie!!
Wonderful accommodation with spectacular views in a great location.
This house is a great place to stay for a Tuscan holiday! Very helpful hosts. We highly recommend this amazing villa.
We couldn't have been more delighted with our stay at Charly and Ann's wonderful farmhouse. They are great hosts, the location is to die for, and I defy anyone not to relax there. I was so entranced by the view over the valley that I set the alarm twice just so that I could get up to enjoy the dawn chorus (one I was rewarded by the sight of a young fawn who came close to the house). There are enough nooks and crannies for everyone to do their own thing, but plenty of space to enjoy being together as well. It's worth mentioning too that I turned 50 while we were there, and the memory of sitting out on the terrace and eating the delicious birthday meal that Ann cooked for us will stay with me for ever. I know that I speak for the whole family when I say that loved our time in San Donnino and can't wait to return. Very highly recommended!
This house and grounds has a stunning 50 mile view of the Tuscan countryside, including ancient hilltop towns. The outdoor terrace was beautifully maintained with a very large table and chairs for large groups and many flowers, grapevines and shade trees. The house has spacious rooms, a large and well-equipped kitchen and dining room and charming decor, The homeowner and his wife live next door and time and again they were lifesavers (for finding us when we were lost), and also for being a great help in figuring out what we wanted to do for the week, best local restaurants, best autoroutes, etc. The house is comfortable with linens, and very clean. We'd highly recommend a stay here if you want to experience the Tuscan countryside, with easy access to Florence and Siena.
Highly recommended. Amazing views, beautifully decorated house, great location and very kind hosts, what more can one ask for. We spent 3 days in May and were very sorry we couldnt stay longer. The villa fit our group of 9 perfectly, we greatly enjoyed breakfasts on the terrace, cooking in the roomy kitchen and sitting by the pool after a long day exploring nearby towns (dont miss montereggioni and colle val d'elsa!).will hopefully be back!
This is a beautiful, very spacious and tastefully restored and decorated apartment with a fantastic view of the Tuscan countryside. This is the place we would most like to come back to.
Excellent plumbing, large, well equipped kitchen, great hosts, who speak excellent English (they are British) and I assume Italian as they have lived here 9 years.
The location is also excellent (you will need a car) with the towns of Florence, Siena, San Gimignano the Chianti region nearby. Their restaurant suggestion was my trip favorite - and it was in old Barberino, a charming hill town only a few miles away.
It was the most wonderful trip. Seven of us, easily accommodated in a spacious house. Charlie's all there is to stay in the house and in the garden. Excellent location and a very good host. We made friends with the dog and the cats. I recommend!
We loved our stay at the farmhouse! Charly was a great host, he met us when we arrived and showed us around the house. He also made great recommendation on restaurants in the area and a wine tasting that we went to the following day.
The house is spacious with 4 bedrooms and 2 large living rooms so it gave us (5 people) plenty of space to spread out. It also had a large kitchen. Just as nice is the outdoor space with two large tables and many chairs ... and then there is the view. The house is positioned on a hill so you get the view of a valley below with the olive tree groves and the grapes on one side and a forest on the other, it was such a relaxing setting to have your morning coffee. The outdoor space around the house also has apple trees, fig trees, grapes, persimmon trees, etc. so we picked fresh fruit for breakfast in the mornings.
The house is well kept up, the bathrooms always had hot water (even after 5 people showered in a row) and there is central heating so this was never an issue. The internet worked fine as well. The location of the house is pretty ideal, it is a 5 minute drive to a near-by village which had a store for necessities and a couple of great restaurants. It was also 20 minutes to an hour away from the surrounding medieval towns and Florence. All around are lush rolling hills with olives or grapes, so the drives were really a great part of the visit.
All of us had an awesome experience, we hope to return soon!
Farmhouse placed in a beautiful scenery of Toscany - we could enjoy views of olive and grape fields. In fact, grapes we could taste straight from the branches shading the patio - black & white, both delicious.
Swimming pool adds up a lot, as after a day of sightseeing, refreshing bath was great.
The owner, Charly, was really helpful from the begining to the end of our stay.
Many thanks Charly! ! ! We might visit You again, and again !
This house is a great place to stay for a Tuscan holiday! There is ample room for guests with four bedrooms. What we really liked about it was the huge kitchen, where we cooked many meals with fresh food from local markets. The outdoor seating is great - there are multiple tables for meals on the patio, but there is also a lower level patio with lounge chairs which was great. The pool isn't on their property but just across the road, and has beautiful views of the Tuscan mountains.
An unexpected surprise were the loads of grapes that we were able to enjoy right off the vine! We were also able to pick a few apples, figs and pears just steps away from the pool, which we baked a delicious fruit tart with!
