The Space

Lovely safe surroundings on Santa Barbara's Upper Riviera.
In a gorgeous natural setting, the rather rustic hillside house is spread out and guests have access to everything.....high speed internet, hot tub, decks with views of the mountains, etc. The property has about 2 acres of tall trees, lush vegetation, and amazing wildlife. Although there's a feeling of isolation, it only takes minutes to get to town, and is a serene refuge from crowds and traffic. [It's best if you have a car. [The nearest bus is about a mile away on a hill]
You'll find quiet, privacy, and peaceful living in this beautiful mountain view share.
Nestled in trees, with lots of garden and open space. Good modest room with very basic furnishings, and amenities of house, but bear in mind this is an old house and there are imperfections. [ I have two dogs...somewhat away from guest space so if you are a germaphobe, please book a hotel] The bathroom will probably be shared as I have two available rooms (see Natural Wonders #2) Longer term is wooden bed because it's harder to make ;)
Non-smoking mature guests. No drugs, moderate alcohol, no visitors.
One single. Additional persons for $15 each.
Child over 10 possible...please inquire
Low rate for our expensive location and for people who want this special, casual atmosphere.and don't expect pristine luxury, but value comfort. A month or more will be asked to share in utilities.
Must like adorable, well, behaved dogs who do not invade your space! A compatible dog might be welcome with extra deposit.
Off street parking available.
I offer fruit and goodies first morning. Longer term, you're on your own with my cereals. bread, milk and coffee, or any of your own.

Guests have access to whole house and property except for private bedrooms

Interaction with Guests

Interaction with other guests is definitely encouraged when appropriate.

The Neighborhood

I've lived in this spot the great majority of my life.
So far, I wouldn't consider anywhere else.
I guess it's the Natural Wonders of it all :)

Getting around

Nearest public transportation is about a mile away and we are on a steep hill, so having a car is good.

  • Arlene is a host who loves to take care and hear the stories of her guests. Her house is perfectly placed with a great panoramic view despite the sun protecting trees above, chipmunks and humming birds will be around you. I can highly recommend to stay there!

  • My husband and I stayed at Arlene's place in Santa Barbra for one night whilst travelling through California on our honeymoon. Arlene was a truly wonderful host; she is very accommodating and likes to send her guests away with full tummies. Arlene has such warmth which made my husband and I feel at ease straight away. She has a quirky 1950's built house in the hills of Santa Barbra which has the most beautiful views of the mountains. There is lots of wildlife roaming around as well - we even saw a baby dear in the garden whilst having breakfast. Lovely place, lovely host, would definitely recommend!

  • Staying at Arlenes house was fabulous! Place was clean, safe and cozy. We had a glass of wine with her in the evening and a cool breakfast with everything we could ever think of in the morning. Would definitely stay here again.

  • Arlene's home is a special place. It feels secluded but you're actually surrounded by so much life - trees sway in the breeze and birds, chipmunks and other small critters dart around during the day. I could have wiled away many hours sitting on her deck - too bad my wife and I only had a few hours in the morning to hang out. I could have downed her fresh-squeezed orange juice for hours - seriously world-class stuff!

Keep in mind, this is definitely someone's home - the two rentable rooms are close to each other, so you may overhear conversations while you're trying to sleep.

Arlene is a gracious host and a friendly and wise woman. She will treat you like a guest in her house though, as opposed to a renter - which means she'll ask you questions and tell you stories. We loved that, but not everyone does - so if you're looking for a place where you can hang out completely undisturbed, make that clear up front.

  • Arlene provided an excellent start to our California adventure. Her house was perfectly situated in the hills of Santa Barbara. She provided a very nice breakfast the first morning, and was very helpful with tips and everything else we might ask. Really enjoyed siting on the terrace in the evening sharing a bottle of wine and talking about life with her. Definitely a high-light of our trip!

  • We found Arlene's house with the help of our gps-system. It is located in the hills of Santa Barbara and we think not so easy to find without gps; although Arlene provided us with a very detailed description beforehand. The home of Arlene is situated in a very peaceful, quiet and natural environment. The house is cozy with lot's of personality and our room had a good size. We used the guest bathroom which was a little bit small, however, we used it alone. In the morning Arlene prepared a lovely breakfast with fresh orange juice, fruits and bread/cereals for us.
We enjoyed our stay with Arlene very much because she is an adorable person who is easy to speak to and very interested in her guests.

  • Arlene was a great hostess. She made sure we felt at home in her beautiful mountainside house. She even gave us a wonderful homemade breakfast and sat down to eat with us. Anytime we are in Santa Barbara we will definitely try to stay with Arlene again.

I am a children's dance instructor, and very fit and active so I'm basically moving most of the time.... at home, in the garden, out dancing, and just puttering around. I have three grown children, three grown grandchildren, and three elementary age grandchildren. I have lived in Santa Barbara since 1959 (great choice immediately after graduating from Vassar College) and in my special paradise home since 1963. I want everyone to be as enthralled with Santa Barbara as I am...come visit soon!!
