Lovely safe surroundings on Santa Barbara's Upper Riviera.
In a gorgeous natural setting, the rather rustic hillside house is spread out and guests have access to everything.....high speed internet, hot tub, decks with views of the mountains, etc. The property has about 2 acres of tall trees, lush vegetation, and amazing wildlife. Although there's a feeling of isolation, it only takes minutes to get to town, and is a serene refuge from crowds and traffic. [It's best if you have a car. [The nearest bus is about a mile away on a hill]
You'll find quiet, privacy, and peaceful living in this beautiful mountain view share.
Nestled in trees, with lots of garden and open space. Good modest room with very basic furnishings, and amenities of house, but bear in mind this is an old house and there are imperfections. [ I have two dogs...somewhat away from guest space so if you are a germaphobe, please book a hotel] The bathroom will probably be shared as I have two available rooms (see Natural Wonders #2) Longer term is wooden bed because it's harder to make ;)
Non-smoking mature guests. No drugs, moderate alcohol, no visitors.
One single. Additional persons for $15 each.
Child over 10 possible...please inquire
Low rate for our expensive location and for people who want this special, casual atmosphere.and don't expect pristine luxury, but value comfort. A month or more will be asked to share in utilities.
Must like adorable, well, behaved dogs who do not invade your space! A compatible dog might be welcome with extra deposit.
Off street parking available.
I offer fruit and goodies first morning. Longer term, you're on your own with my cereals. bread, milk and coffee, or any of your own.
Guests have access to whole house and property except for private bedrooms
Interaction with Guests
Interaction with other guests is definitely encouraged when appropriate.
I've lived in this spot the great majority of my life.
So far, I wouldn't consider anywhere else.
I guess it's the Natural Wonders of it all :)
Nearest public transportation is about a mile away and we are on a steep hill, so having a car is good.

I very much look forward to breakfast time with my guests, as that is often the best time to enjoy their interests and personalities, however, as of April 2013, I will need to change my breakfast policy a bit. I have some classes I will be going to and won't always be home for everyone's breakfast.
Everything will be on the table after the first night. Subsequent mornings there will still will be available coffee, tea, some fruit, cereals, bread, etc. in a serve yourself manner. Long term guests may provide some of your own favorite items.
I always want to provide enough so no one starts the day hungry!
From the minute we got there we were blown away by the scenic views around us. Arlenes home is a peaceful retreat . Its her attention to detail that really makes this an experience, full marks! A weekend we wont soon forget. Thank you.
The highlight of our trip was meeting this wonderful host who welcomed us to her amazing paradise, Shangri-La. Posh neighborhood. Handcrafted house on ridge overlooking valley. Very eclectic decor. Not for you if you love Holiday Inn & Ritz Carlton. Apply immediately if you love Globe Trecker, DIY, HGTV, AnthonyBourdain.
Arlene is very kind and welcoming. She graciously accommodated my every request over my week's stay. My room was super quiet and the dogs were well behaved; I slept well at night. I felt like I had total freedom to do my own thing, not too many restrictions or rules to tiptoe around. The area surrounding the house had decks and sitting areas to enjoy the outdoors. The streets were great for urban hiking walks.
I guess I messed up and didn't show you the luggage rack or how other long term guests have managed having their things off the floor.
Also, sorry if you weren't comfortable in the bathroom but it's why I have a cheap price for this neighborhood....tradeoffs are necessary :)
Arlene's lovely home is peaceful and relaxing...and she is a most gracious hostess. She makes you feel so comfortable while staying at her home and the breakfast was amazing as was the view outside while enjoying your breakfast. I enjoyed visiting with her and I can tell she takes excellent care of each and every guest. Clean, with a very comfortable bed. I will come back again when I have more time to enjoy all the amenities of her home!
Staying at Arlene's is a trip in itself. Her wood house is surrounded by trees, located in Santa Barbara hills. She is an awesome woman, has a lot to relate and it was a pleasure to chat with her while enjoying her homemade breakfast which was offered the first morning. Open-minded, curious, dynamic, sensible, welcoming, generous, here is Arlene. About the place, it is not perfect. If you are looking for something perfect, go to a 4* accommodation and pay for it. For me it was tho, because this place definitely has a soul. And a beautiful person as a owner. I would love to see Arlene again, and would go back to her place anytime, well, even now if only I could ! Enjoy ;)
It was a very good place! House landscape was so wonderful!
Breakfast was really delicious. It was very nice to see landscape while having a breakfast. Arlene was a very good host. We don't speak English very well, but Arlene have understood and got consideration for us. And Two dogs was so cute :D ! I will stay here again if I come to Santa Babara.
Arlene was a very friendly host with many stories to share. The view from the house is absolutely magnificent and we had such a peaceful quiet night sleep.

I am a children's dance instructor, and very fit and active so I'm basically moving most of the time....
at home, in the garden, out dancing, and just puttering around.
I have three grown children, three grown grandchildren, and three elementary age grandchildren.
I have lived in Santa Barbara since 1959 (great choice immediately after graduating from Vassar College) and in my special paradise home since 1963.
I want everyone to be as enthralled with Santa Barbara as I am...come visit soon!!
