Lovely safe surroundings on Santa Barbara's Upper Riviera.
In a gorgeous natural setting, the rather rustic hillside house is spread out and guests have access to everything.....high speed internet, hot tub, decks with views of the mountains, etc. The property has about 2 acres of tall trees, lush vegetation, and amazing wildlife. Although there's a feeling of isolation, it only takes minutes to get to town, and is a serene refuge from crowds and traffic. [It's best if you have a car. [The nearest bus is about a mile away on a hill]
You'll find quiet, privacy, and peaceful living in this beautiful mountain view share.
Nestled in trees, with lots of garden and open space. Good modest room with very basic furnishings, and amenities of house, but bear in mind this is an old house and there are imperfections. [ I have two dogs...somewhat away from guest space so if you are a germaphobe, please book a hotel] The bathroom will probably be shared as I have two available rooms (see Natural Wonders #2) Longer term is wooden bed because it's harder to make ;)
Non-smoking mature guests. No drugs, moderate alcohol, no visitors.
One single. Additional persons for $15 each.
Child over 10 possible...please inquire
Low rate for our expensive location and for people who want this special, casual atmosphere.and don't expect pristine luxury, but value comfort. A month or more will be asked to share in utilities.
Must like adorable, well, behaved dogs who do not invade your space! A compatible dog might be welcome with extra deposit.
Off street parking available.
I offer fruit and goodies first morning. Longer term, you're on your own with my cereals. bread, milk and coffee, or any of your own.
Guests have access to whole house and property except for private bedrooms
Interaction with Guests
Interaction with other guests is definitely encouraged when appropriate.
I've lived in this spot the great majority of my life.
So far, I wouldn't consider anywhere else.
I guess it's the Natural Wonders of it all :)
Nearest public transportation is about a mile away and we are on a steep hill, so having a car is good.

I very much look forward to breakfast time with my guests, as that is often the best time to enjoy their interests and personalities, however, as of April 2013, I will need to change my breakfast policy a bit. I have some classes I will be going to and won't always be home for everyone's breakfast.
Everything will be on the table after the first night. Subsequent mornings there will still will be available coffee, tea, some fruit, cereals, bread, etc. in a serve yourself manner. Long term guests may provide some of your own favorite items.
I always want to provide enough so no one starts the day hungry!
Arlene's home has a lot more to offer than the photos can show. Immediately entering the front door I could sense a warm cozy atmosphere surrounded in art. If you are into large windows and unsymmetrical unique architecture you will love staying here. The space is like an art piece of its own, and if you are a visual person your eyes will have a feast.
The house is surrounded by nature and it's in a stunning neighborhood. The outside is equally welcoming with many areas to sit and enjoy the shade and breeze under the large oak trees. You can see an occasional deer walking by if you're lucky!
I encourage you to wake up early and enjoy freshly squeezed oranges from the neighbors and the delicious hand picked things that Arlene has to offer for breakfast. She is also a great conversationalist with a great positive attitude that is truly inspiring.
Arlene was such a wonderful hostess! My husband and I were planning on staying through the weekend, but unfortunately, some personal issues came up back home and we had to cut our trip short. Arlene was extremely understanding and accommodating. The room was comfortable and decorated nicely, and the house in general made us feel like we were worlds away from the city, although we were just a few short minutes above it. Surrounded by trees and secluded from the craziness of the city, the house is simply beautiful and so charming. Arlene herself is an incredibly kind, sweet, and charismatic individual. She has wonderful stories to tell, especially having lived in this house for 50+ years! She provided us with a fantastic breakfast spread--fresh-squeezed orange juice!--and we found the room and bed to be exceedingly comfortable. All in all, a wonderful experience and thank you, Arlene, for making our first-ever AirBnB experience such a positive one!
Arlene is a very friendly, outgoing person. She goes out of her way to make you feel welcome and comfortable. While sitting outside on her porch you feel like your in a tree house. I appreciated the layout of food available for me in the morning. Fresh fruit, orange juice, bagel, cereal, tea, or coffee for me to choose from. This was the first time I was ever offered anything to eat at an airbnb place. The sleeping room was very comfortable, and supplied with numerous blanket, a heater, or a fan for you to use as desired. I enjoyed visitig with her as well.
My brief stay with Arlene was delightful. A peaceful, quiet spot to rest after enjoying Steely (email hidden) Bowl. I greatly enjoyed conversing with Arlene on many topics but most interesting to me was a book I spotted by her brother in law who was the staff photographer for Columbia Record for more than 4 decades during it's heyday.
The house was very rustic as described with a treasure trove of of personal artifacts that Arlene has collected over her many years here. The room was comfy with a shared bathroom (shower only) in the hall. The bathroom is a bit small and can only accommodate one person at a time. Breakfast was great with lots of fresh fruit, cereals, yogurt and fresh squeezed oj from Arlene's neighbors tree! I hope to return again to enjoy more of Santa Barbara cultural treasures.
I returned to Santa Barbara, my previous home of 26 years. I really didn’t want to stay with friends and I didn’t want to stay at a hotel. This was my first adventure with Air B&B. First off, the location of Arlene’s home is exceptional. It’s an outstanding neighborhood, exceptional views, wonderful neighborhood to walk in, and easy drive downtown. Her home is very organic and reflects her creativity--which I enjoyed! My room was perfect for my needs. She offers a simple breakfast of high quality, which I really appreciated. I really enjoyed the outdoor patio for a quiet lunch and dinner. I also thoroughly enjoyed Arlene. She loves welcoming people with Air B&B and is in her element as a hostess. I am grateful for my time with her in her beautiful house and I treasure the memories of that experience.

I am a children's dance instructor, and very fit and active so I'm basically moving most of the time....
at home, in the garden, out dancing, and just puttering around.
I have three grown children, three grown grandchildren, and three elementary age grandchildren.
I have lived in Santa Barbara since 1959 (great choice immediately after graduating from Vassar College) and in my special paradise home since 1963.
I want everyone to be as enthralled with Santa Barbara as I am...come visit soon!!
