Our little cottage, "Banyan-Nook", is tucked under a big Banyan tree! The back wall is all screened and looks out into the gardens. It has a magical feeling of being a part of nature. It has a queen size bed, linens, kitchen counter with a double stainless sink, 2 burner propane stove, coffee press, dishes, pots, blender, cooler,a private hot outdoor shower, and indoor bathroom with a toilet. All of the purified Hawaiian rain water that you'll need is provided for you. Free snorkel gear is available, as well as free wifi internet. Washer and dryer are available. It is featured with a gorgeous stained glass window. The cottage has a very peaceful feeling. Located just off of the historical "Red Road" on the southeast coast of the Big Island, which is the sunniest part of the east side of the island. No vog here! Just a few miles away from where the lava is flowing down the mountain, creating the newest land on earth! This is truly an awesome part of the Big Island that most people don't venture out to see! Only a 7 minute walk down to Kehena black sand beach, where you can swim with the dolphins, or just sit and watch them play. A 15 minute drive to the warm ponds, where you can soak your bones in water that is thermally heated by the volcano. 20 minutes to Kapoho tidepools, where you can snorkel at one of the best spots on the island with it's many varities of fish and corals. 20 minutes to Pahoa town for groceries, gas, banks, restaurants, etc. 45 minutes to Hilo, and 55 to Volcano National Park. A wonderful place to base yourself in peace while you explore this amazing island with all of it's glory! 2 persons maximum. No pets, please. We hope to have the opportunity to be your hosts! Mahalo! Seneca and Jeff.
This was a great little cottage at a great price. You feel in the wild with croaking frogs and birds outside, the sound of wind and rain on the roof. You have plenty of privacy. And the price is right! The nearby black sand beach is superb. The only downside is that it's not super conveniently located, but we liked that as well. Jeff and Seneca were super hosts and very helpful.
cute little hidden cottage, wasn't too hard to find. a bit of a drive to get there but great if you really wanted to get away from the "city" life. jeff built the place himself and its pretty impressive. all the artwork and stained glass was beautiful. we didn't stay at the cottage very much since we were out all day but it was a great experience staying in something totally different from the regular hotel. frogs were pretty loud at night but you get used to it. showering outside was definitely something i had never done before but everything is very private and hidden with all the trees and bushes around. felt very safe here and overall really enjoyed our stay!
The Banyan Nook may be small but it is clean, cozy and had everything we needed. The open design connects you with surrounding flora and beautifully landscaped yard. Wonderful outdoor shower. Jeff and Seneca r laid-back and awesome! Very open, helpful and courteous hosts. Really enjoyed getting to know them and their lovely cat Curly and adorable dog PJ! Hope to stay there again next year
Hey you guys!
Thanks so much for your great review!
It was really cool to meet you two...always so sad for us when great folks like you leave....it leaves us with a bit of empty frustration!
Please know we totally enjoyed your visit, and we hope to see you again some day!
Jeff and Seneca.
We had a great time at the cottage. I particularly liked the screen for the back wall, the outdoor shower and the little kitchenette. Seneca and Jeff were great hosts. Definitely go visit the Kapoho tide pools. And I enjoyed the coqui frogs singing at night. A very pleasant experience. I recommend it.
we had a pleasure to stay at Banyan-Nook Cottage this past September, and had some really good time in the area! loved outside shower, reminded me of summers at my grandma's farm :-) i don't know where they got it, but the bed in the cottage is the most comfortable bed i've ever slept on! (cosidering that i arrived sick as a dog, and was still able to get some sleep) no back wall is the most awesome idea ever, it was so nice to wake up to the sound of morning rain!
we would definitely come back, only next time we'd rent the other cottage, Dolphinsong, as we found Banyan-Nook a bit too tight for two people (and keep in mind that if you're staying there with someone else, you need to be extremely, intimately close to that person.)
We've been traveling for 2 months now and really saw some beautiful places. But the Banyan-Nook Cottage definitely was our favorite spot!! We loved the stained glass, the "outdoor-experience" even though you're inside, all those beautiful plants surrounding this cute cottage and of course the warm and welcoming hosts Seneca and Jeff. Thank you so much for sharing your little paradise with us! We'll definitely come back one day!
I am always fascinated by the history of the places I go to, and knowing how carefully and lovingly this place was created as explained in the extensive Information Folder provided enhanced my experience of staying at the Banyan Nook cottage.
There is a certain beauty about this place that is hard to find elsewhere, and I think it may just be reflective of the nature of the hosts Seneca and Jeff.
We enjoyed lying in bed overlooking the banyan tree through the screened open back “wall”, the light shining through Seneca’s stained glass artworks, the bamboo finishing around the ceiling cornices and along the support poles, the beautiful flowers on the table top…
We loved the private, continuous gas, open sky shower, the pressure wasn’t a problem for us and it was hot!
The kitchen was well stocked, there were also plenty of towels, extra blankets. The place is screened very efficiently so we didn’t have a problem with the mosquitoes inside (not that there were many outside either!). We enjoyed the music selection and the extensive reading available.
We wish we could’ve stayed longer… We will just have to come back again!
Felt right at home with Jeff and Seneca. Very magical location and warm sweet energy. Thank you for welcoming us to this sacred island. We will be in touch!
We loved our stay at the Banyan-Nook Cottage. Seneca and Jeff were helpful and welcoming, but not intrusive. The cottage and setting were charming with geckos sticking around and frogs to sing you to sleep. We hope to come back some day.
