Long Pond boasts some of the cleanest water in southern Maine. The lake, measuring about 1 1/2 by 1/2 miles, is relatively sparsely populated, and motor traffic is minimal compared to most New England lakes. There is a boat launch on the southeast extreme of the lake, to which directions can be provided.
Access for swimming and boating is via the dock. The pond bottom is rocky and drops off at a medium grade from the shoreline. There is a public beach at one end of the lake which is sandy and deepens very gradually, excellent for children. Water temperature in the summer is very pleasant, typically in the high 70's.
The lake is host to typical indigenous fish species including Large and Smallmouth Bass, Pickerel, Yellow Perch, Sunfish, and Crappies. Nesting loons have been seen over the last twenty years. Great Blue Herons are frequent visitors, and various raptors, including Bald Eagles, have been spotted on the lake. Fishing, birding, and wildlife viewing are exceptional.
Trails and dirt roads circle the lake and merge with paved roads. Opportunities for hiking and biking are abundant.
The cottage includes the use of several boats, including a canoe, two kayaks, a sailboat, and a windsurfer.
The cottage is located about 5 miles from the towns of Cornish and Kezar Falls, both of which have supermarkets, restaurants, and other amenities. Lobsters and fresh farm produce are available as well.
Use (website hidden) Maps for driving directions. (website hidden) Maps does not include the entirety of East Shore Road (the final road leading to the cottage). Make sure to continue to the very end of the road where you will see the cottage, marked as #131.
Through the monitoring efforts of the Long Pond Association, the lake has been kept free of invasive species. Should you trailer or carry your own boats or gear to the pond, please review and follow the procedures described in the links and help us keep Long Pond pristine.
